Sarangani in History: Quincentennial Marker of Magellan-Elcano Expedition in Batulaki, Glan
Music: While We Were Sleeping
Musician: Vermos
URL:
Batulaki is the last barangay of the Municipality of Glan, Sarangani Province, bordering Davao Occidental in the South.
It is located at the tip of the peninsula in the Southernmost part of mainland Mindanao.
As we commemorate the 500th year of the circumnavigation of the world led by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, a marker has been unveiled in Batulaki.
It is the 32nd of the 34 markers installed in different parts of the country, specifically in Visayas and Mindanao.
The markers indicate the places where the crew of the Magellan-Elcano expedition dropped anchor.
After the battle of Mactan, where Magellan was killed, the surviving crew led by Juan Sebastián Elcano continued the expedition to find the island of Molucca, landing on various shores of the archipelago, before eventually, returning to Spain.
In the province of Sarangani, the National Historical Commission and the National Quincentennial Commmission have ascertained two areas where the surviving crew of the expedition docked.
Based on the records of the chronicler Antonio Pigafetta, the crew landed in Benaian, which is believed to be what is now Barangay Kamanga, in the Municipality of Maasim.
From there, in October 26, 1521, the crew was forced to seek refuge at Biraham Batolach, or the present-day Batulaki, due a furious storm.
The marker in Batulaki was unveiled on October 26, 2021, exactly 500 years after the recorded landing of Magellan's surviving crew.
The following day, the crew continued on their journey to find Molucca or the spice island, dropping by Balut and Sarangani islands on their way there.
While the Magellan-Elcano circumnavigation expedition of proved that the Earth is a sphere, the records of Pigafetta also show that the Philippine islands were not discovered by Magellan, instead our ancestors have already been thriving and have always been here even before they came.

Festival Is Back | Lubi Lubi Festival 2022 Grand Opening Ceremony | Rod One Journey
Municipality of Glan, is located at the southernmost tip of the Philippines, Glan boasts of pristine shorelines dotted with strips of powdery white-sand beach resorts facing the Celebes Sea which, hands down, is among the Philippines' best beaches.
Among the earliest Christian towns in Mindanao, Glan has heaps to offer both for tourists and investors. Colonial-era structures make Glan even more alluring to visitors.
Every October, Glan showcases the Lubi-Lubi Festival. There is more to the costumes, choreography and musicality in this yearly competition.
The colors and faces of Lubi-Lubi Festival every 8th of October reflect Glan's industry and tradition altogether.
Almost 90 percent of the town's total land area is planted with coconuts; town folks have both the old and new ways to make a living out of it, from the tree's roots to its leaves; beverages to handicrafts to manufactured products.
Street-dancing groups compete in musicality, choreography and costume using indigenous materials from the coconut.
Lubi-Lubi Festival reflects an old tradition of Glan, the province's oldest town. Each competing group showcases a particularly old religious belief of the people about the coconut tree; animistic beliefs are brought to life in choreography by rituals of reverence to the tree as a source of blessings such as wind, water and rain, fire, good health, and even life.
The Lubi-Lubi Festival celebrates coconut being the major product of Glan which is also one of the oldest town's of Mindanao, Philippines at 108 years on October 8, 2022. Lubi-Lubi performers wearing costumes made of coconut materials, dance in the streets where Hispanic houses still stand today.
Glan, also known as the Coco Queen of the South and the oldest town in Southern and Central Mindanao, is Sarangani's top producer of coconut.
After 2 years of recess due to COVID-19 Pandemic from 2020 to 2021, the long wait is over. Lubi - Lubi Festival is now back that will run through from September 24 to October 8, 2022.
Various events and activities are all line-up up to the day of peak celebration on October 8, 2022. So, what are you waiting for? Come, Visit and Experience the Lubi-Lubi Festival 2022.
