Places to see in ( Assisi - Italy ) Santa Maria degli Angeli
The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli is a church situated in the plain at the foot of the hill of Assisi, Italy, in the frazione of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The basilica was constructed in the Mannerist style between 1569 and 1679 enclosing the 9th century little church, the Porziuncola, the most sacred place for the Franciscans. It was here that the young Francis of Assisi understood his vocation and renounced the world in order to live in poverty among the poor and thus started the Franciscan movement.
After the death of Saint Francis in 1226, the friars built several small huts around the Porziuncola. In 1230 a refectory and some adjacent buildings were added. In the course of time little porticoes and accommodations for the friars were added around the Porziuncola. Some foundations of these were discovered during excavations under the floor of the present basilica between 1967 and 1969. As vast numbers pilgrims came flocking to Assisi to receive the Pardon of Assisi, the small space of the Porziuncola became completely inadequate to house all these pilgrims. The necessity grew to build a church incorporating the Porziuncola. The buildings around the shrine were taken down by order of Pope Pius V (1566-1572), except the Chapel of the Transito, the cell in which St. Francis had died. Construction of the basilica started on 25 March 1569.
The basilica has a rectangular ground plan, divided into a central nave and two lateral aisles, flanked by ten side chapels, with at the far end a transept, and a long choir in a semi-circular apse, protruding from the ground plan. The Porziuncola is situated directly under the dome. The interior is simple and yet elegant, with only a few decorations, in stark contrast with the decorations of the side chapels. The nave and the aisles were rebuilt in neoclassical Doric style by Luigi Poletti. The apse holds the precious wooden choir, carved by Franciscan brothers starting in 1689, the papal cathedra (with bas-reliefs by E. Manfrini) and the papal altar. The Chapel of the Transito, the cell in which St. Francis died, is still preserved. It is situated under the bay of the choir, against the right columns of the dome. The side chapels were decorated by great artists from several periods, including Antonio Circignani (all paintings in the Chapel of St Anne, 1602-1603), Francesco Appiani, (Chapels of St. Anthony and St. Peter in Chains, 1756–1760), Ventura Salimbeni (Chapel of the Removal of the Lord, 1602).
The chiesetta (little church) of Porziuncola (Italian for Little portion) is the most sacred place for Franciscans. Francis was given this little church, dating from the 9th century, by the Benedictine monks. The church is decorated by artists from different periods. Above the entrance is the fresco by Johann Friedrich Overbeck (1829) depicting St. Francis receiving from the Christ and the Virgin the indulgence, known as the “Pardon of Assisi”.
The Cappella del Transito is the small room where St. Francis died on 3 October 1226. It was a little hut serving as a primitive infirmary for the sick. It is decorated at the outside by the fresco of The transito by Domenico Bruschi (1886). On the inside, above the small altar, is the rope of St. Francis. Behind the altar, there is a glazed terracotta statue of St. Francis by Andrea della Robbia (c. 1490).
A new crypt was constructed behind the altar between 1965 and 1970. During the excavations foundations of the original little huts, surrounding the Porziuncola, were exposed. The crypt’s altar rests on a massive, multiple-branched tree trunk, sculpted by Francesco Prosperi.

Places to see in ( Assisi - Italy ) Santuario di Rivotorto
The sanctuary of Rivotorto rises in Rivotorto , at the foot of Mount Subasio , not far from Santa Maria degli Angeli . Inside the sanctuary has been rebuilt what is called the Tugurio, place where Francis of Assisi and his first companions settled to pray, meditate, work at the dawn of the Franciscan Fraternity, and in fact this moment is remembered with an engraving in stone at the entrance, HIC PRIMORDIA FRATRUM MINORUM(here the beginnings of the friars minor).
The sanctuary protects the restored remains of two small stone buildings, without any ornament, inside which according to tradition, Francesco and his companions took refuge. This place, around which there are roads and parking lots, was once surrounded by the countryside, a countryside much less disciplined and cultivated than what today represents the Assisian countryside.
It must therefore be thought that Francis and his first companions lived, according to the spirit of humility and poverty of Francis in a place more difficult to reach and isolated than is today the sanctuary of Rivotorto

Assisi Italy - Must Visit Attractions & Best Things To Do
Pilgrims have been coming to Assisi, Italy since the 13th century to venerate St. Francis, who was born and buried here, but you don’t have to be religious to enjoy the beauty of this postcard-perfect town.
Framed by the long, undulating hills of Umbria and the forests of Monte Subasio, Assisi is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the world and one of Italy’s most spell-binding gems.
You see, Assisi isn’t just home to UNESCO World Heritage sites, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The entire town basks in this coveted status because of its plethora of art and historically significant buildings, like the Basilica di San Francesco.
The basilica, in particular, has such a collection of frescoes and paintings that it rivals many art museums. According to the UN, The town has a singular importance for its role in the diffusion of the Franciscan Order and for its “continuity of a city-sanctuary” from its Umbrian-Roman origins to today.

Religion in Assisi
As the birth place of one of Catholicism’s most venerated saints (one of the two patron saints of Italy), Assisi is a town with religion very close to its heart. Visitors shouldn’t be surprised to see monks in long brown robes roaming the streets or bands of pilgrims walking the country roads surrounding the town.
Its religious influence is reflected even in its sister towns: Assisi is twinned with Bethlehem and Santiago di Compostella, among others. Today Assisi is considered a global symbol of peace. It has hosted three meetings of the major world religions, convened by Pope John Paul II in 1986 and 2002 and Pope Benedict XVI in 2011. It was also the home of St. Clare, who was personally inspired to follow the path of God by St. Francis and helped form the Order of Poor Clares which still exists today.
What to See
Rocca Maggiore
The massive Rocca Maggiore sits at the tip top of Assisi. It’s a 14th-century castle that is the perfect starting place for sightseeing because everything is, quite literally, downhill from there.
Basilica of St. Francis
The most famous and probably most impressive attraction in Assisi is the Basilica of St. Francis. It’s also literally the biggest thing in the area – so massive you can see it for miles around.
Duomo di San Rufino
The San Rufino Cathedral or simply Assisi Cathedral is a favorite spot among pilgrims due to its connection to St. Francis’ life. It has a beautiful, Romanesque façade featuring three rose windows.
Santa Maria Sopra Minerva
This church is built inside a converted 1st century BC temple once dedicated to the Roman goddess of wisdom, Minerva. Amid all the medieval and Renaissance buildings, its towering corinthian columns are a stark reminder of the power and beauty of Roman imperial architecture.
Santa Maria degli Angeli
This Basilica is famous for housing the Porziuncola, a tiny stone structure considered the home of St. Francis and his followers. Today the Porziuncola is a small church on the inside of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
San Damiano Church
San Damiano is a tiny church located outside of the walls of Assisi. According to legend, it was here that St. Francis first heard the voice of God telling him to “rebuild the church.”
Chiesa Nuova
Near to the Piazza del Comune, Assisi’s central piazza, Chiesa Nuova supposedly sits atop the childhood home of St. Francis.
Basilica di Santa Chiara
Finally, there’s the Basilica of St. Clare. One of the more prominent women in the history of the Catholic church, St. Clare was St. Francis’ contemporary and founder of the Order of the Poor Clares.
Know Before You Go
Though you can tour the city center in just an afternoon, give yourself an overnight stay or at least a full day to truly soak in the atmosphere. The historic city center of Assisi, Italy is small and welcoming, easily managed on foot. That said, keep in mind that you’re in hilly Umbria, in the foothills of Monte Subasio. Bring your walking shoes and take it slow on the sometimes-steep, cobblestone streets!
Visitors can enjoy the city year round but we prefer fall, winter, and spring – it can feel like an oven during the summer and that’s also the season when you get peak pilgrimage crowds. Because of its central location in Italy, the “shoulder” seasons in Assisi are often warm and pleasant, even when areas in Northern Italy are still cold.
Since a huge part of visiting Assisi is stepping inside its many gorgeous churches, be sure to dress appropriately. Shorts that cover your knees and shirts that cover your shoulders are a must for both men and women.

Santa Maria Degli Angeli a Pizzofalcone is a Baroque-style church in Napoli - Naples Italy - ECTV
Donate To Eric Clarks Travel Videos. =)
Santa Maria degli Angeli a Pizzofalcone is a Baroque-style church in Naples, Italy.
A church, designed by Francesco Grimaldi, was built at the site for the Theatine Order. Construction started in 1587 and was completed in 1610.
The interior is decorated with paintings by Giordano, and Andrea Vaccaro. The central nave and transept ceilings were frescoed Scenes from the Life of the Virgin (1668-1675) by Giovanni Battista Beinaschi. The Cupola was frescoed with a Coronation of the Virgin. Some of these frescoes suffered damage from aerial bombing during the second World War. Francesco Maria Caselli painted the large canvases in the apse and transept. In the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is a canvas depicting the Virgin by Massimo Stanzione, while Giovanni Bernardo Azzolino decorated the first and third chapels on the left side. In the choir is a canvas of San Gaetano (1662) by Luca Giordano. The main altar by Giovanni Battista Broggia was made in Neoclassic style. It has a canvas by Paolo De Matteis depicting Sant'Andrea in Extasis.
The Minor Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels in Assisi, Italy
The Minor Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels (Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli) is a papal minor basilica that is in the lower part of Assisi, Italy (about a 9 minute walk from the translation). I also take a quick tour of the Museum that is attached to Minor Basilica. Main things to see here are: 1) the small Church within the large Basilica; 2) The place where St. Francis of Assisi died; 3) Statue of St. Francis holding a real Dove; and 4) Place where St. Francis threw himself into a thorn bush.
Italy's Best Kept Secrets - Assisi
Nestled between the hills of Tuscany, Marche and Lazio, Umbria regards itself as the green heart of Italy. Home to the beautiful medieval towns of Perugia and Assisi, the rolling mountains of the Appennini, flower-filled meadows and vineyards, and castles on the hillside, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy.
The town of Assisi, with its Roman ruins, winding medieval streets and sacred shrines, has been a major Catholic pilgrimage destination for centuries. Perched halfway up Mount Subasio, the visual impact of Assisi's shimmering white and pink marble buildings is magnificent. The city is dominated by the massive 14th-century Rocca Maggiore - a hill fortress offering fabulous views over the valley and nearby Perugia. St Francis was born here in 1182 and work began on his basilica two years after his death in 1228, as a fitting tribute to the patron saint of animals.
The stunning Basilica di San Francesco, a UNESCO world heritage site, comprising of two churches, houses one of the world's most impressive collections of art outside a gallery, with glittering frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue and Martini. St. Francis himself lies buried under the crypt.
Roman foundations are a common feature of many buildings in Assisi. The town's many churches include Santa Maria Maggiore, San Pietro, St. Clare and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. San Pietro is a sober little church downhill from the Basilica di San Francesco. Although consecrated in 1253, the simple rectangular facade with its three large spoked windows wasn't finished until 1268. The church interior is spare, of interest mainly for its strange pre-Gothic pointed ceiling vaults and the odd dome, a concentric cone of bricks in the Arab-Norman style. At the time of my visit, a simple wedding took place here.
