La Maddalena Sardinia Italy Bus and Boat Tour Guide
La Maddalena is a magical archipelago in Sardinia Italy. We unfortunately were unable to rent a car, but we were able to take the bus to this beautiful destination. In this guide we'll share how to get from Olbia Sardinia to Palau and then to La Maddalena either on a boat tour or by ferry. A boat tour is a great way to explore La Maddalena Archipelago only accessible by boat. The crystal clear and perfectly blue turquoise water is incredible must see in Sardinia.

Amalfi Coast, Italy 2022 | Atrani, The Smallest Town in Italy - The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena
Set between the mountains and the sea, the Amalfi Coast is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is one of Italy's most memorable destinations. Located in the Campania region of Italy, the Amalfi Coast displays sky-high costal cliffs raised from the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The coast with its 13 picturesque and multicolored seaside towns offers the traveler probably the most stunning views in Italy. The seaside towns on the Amalfi Coast are all connected via the SS163 highway, one of the most scenic roads in the world.
Set on the rock, with an ancient medieval structure, Atrani is characterized by houses built at a short distance from each other and often one on top of the other. The town located along the valley of the river Dragone, between the Civita Hill and Aureo Hill is the smallest town in Italy, having a surface area 0.12 km2. At a short distance from Amalfi, Atrani is a town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, with a population of less than one thousand, an idyllic and picturesque place, waiting to be explored. Visiting Atrani means that you can enjoy not only the wonderful panorama but also the atmosphere of the ancient seaside villages of Italy.
The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Atrani was founded in 1274 on the ruins of a medieval fortress to thank the Saint for freeing the town from the occupation of the Saracens. The church was restored in 1570 and 1669 and in 1753 the church was enlarged and took on the current structure with three naves and, on that occasion, the last remains of the ancient fort were demolished. In 1852 it was completely modernized by the Salerno architect Lorenzo Casalbore. The church has a beautiful façade, the only example of Rococò on the Amalfi Coast, a majolica dome and a sixteenth-century bell tower in brown tuff.
The beach curves around the small bay and the coastal scenery is simply beautiful, with the town above the beach and the cliffs behind and the pure Mediterranean blue of sea in front. The sandy beach lying below the small town is easily accessible by foot, with calm and clear water and sun exposure all morning and early afternoon.

Amalfi Coast, Italy 2022 | Atrani - Piazza Umberto I & The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena
Set between the mountains and the sea, the Amalfi Coast is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is one of Italy's most memorable destinations. Located in the Campania region of Italy, the Amalfi Coast displays sky-high costal cliffs raised from the turquoise waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The coast with its 13 picturesque and multicolored seaside towns offers the traveler probably the most stunning views in Italy. The seaside towns on the Amalfi Coast are all connected via the SS163 highway, one of the most scenic roads in the world.
Set on the rock, with an ancient medieval structure, Atrani is characterized by houses built at a short distance from each other and often one on top of the other. The town located along the valley of the river Dragone, between the Civita Hill and Aureo Hill is the smallest town in Italy, having a surface area 0.12 km2. At a short distance from Amalfi, Atrani is a town overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, with a population of less than one thousand, an idyllic and picturesque place, waiting to be explored. Visiting Atrani means that you can enjoy not only the wonderful panorama but also the atmosphere of the ancient seaside villages of Italy.
Located just steps from the sea, Piazza Umberto I is the heart of the town. To reach the Piazza you have to cross the antique passageway which connects the beach and the sea with the central square of Atrani. Originally, the place was constructed as a shelter for boats during high tide and sea storms. Today, the charming Piazza is full of the essentials of Italian life: a general store, barbers, cafes and restaurants. The passageway offers a beautiful view of the beach, fishing boats and the sea beyond.
The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Atrani was founded in 1274 on the ruins of a medieval fortress to thank the Saint for freeing the town from the occupation of the Saracens. The church was restored in 1570 and 1669 and in 1753 the church was enlarged and took on the current structure with three naves and, on that occasion, the last remains of the ancient fort were demolished. In 1852 it was completely modernized by the Salerno architect Lorenzo Casalbore. Finding, exploring & photograph Santa Maddalena Church is a tricky thing. Crossed the mountains and endless hills and various small villages finally arrived at Funes/Villnöss Valley. If you are a photographer be prepared to spend a day in green meadows, dense forests, rustic mountain huts, striking mountain peaks, and lovely villages... I definitely revisit this area on my next trip and travel deeper into the valley.
Like many visitors, this is my first trip to Funes valley, we are not familiar with the area and wasted so much time looking for the perfect spot for a few shots. I read some Google articles, but finding the exact spot to photograph is another story since most areas are car-free zone. I decided to post this video so photographers or visitors can find it more easily on your trip to Santa Maddalena Church.

La Maddalena is a town and comune located on the island with the same name, in northern Sardinia, part of the province of Sassari, Italy. La Maddalena is the largest town in the Maddalena archipelago, just 2 kilometres (1 mile) from the northeastern shore of Sardinia and sitting in the Straits of Bonifacio, between it and Corsica.
The focal-point of pedestrian activity is found around Piazza Umberto I (formerly known as Piazza Comando-the older generation of natives in town still commonly refer to the piazza by its original name). There is an adjacent via (Garibaldi) that connects the port (Banchina Commerciale I) facing the Island of Santo Stefano and Piazza Umberto I with city hall. Via Garibaldi is surrounded by commercial shops, restaurants, and bars.
La Maddalena now derives much of its income from tourism. The only method of traveling to La Maddalena is by boat, with car ferries travelling from nearby Palau and from the Italian mainland.

The island of Maddalena is renowned for its beaches; it is characterized by rocky granitic terrain and has some ancient fortifications. Spalmatore and Bassa Trinita are two popular beaches. It is connected by causeway with the nearby island of Caprera, famous as the residence of the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi.
La Maddalena has undergone many name changes: the Romans named it Ilva, Fussa and Bucina and in the Middle Ages the island was known as Bicinara before being given the name of Santa Maria Magdalena in the 16th century. After this it finally became known as La Maddalena. The Maddalena archipelago is known from archaeological evidence to have been occupied in prehistoric times, but its written history begins with the Roman Empire.
After the fall of the Western Roman Empire the islands were completely abandoned until the 12th century, when they were chosen by Benedictine monks founding small communities there. The islands were the object of a dispute between the Republics of Pisa and Genoa in the 12th century. In 1584 all the monasteries on the islands were destroyed by one of the Ottoman raids. In the 17th century shepherds began to bring their flocks to the islands in the winter months.
Its location in the Strait of Bonifacio, through which much maritime traffic must pass, has turned the archipelago into a strategic military position. In 1767 it was occupied by the Savoy-Piedmontese. The nucleus of the present town of La Maddalena emerged then. In 1793 a French expedition, in which Napoleon Bonaparte took part, unsuccessfully tried to occupy the island. It was the first combat experience of Napoleon Bonaparte. During all the Napoleonic Wars Admiral Horatio Nelson used the archipelago of La Maddalena as a base for his fleet in actions against the French.
