SAN MINIATO, ITALY 🇮🇹 | Undiscovered Hilltop Town in TUSCANY!
SAN MINIATO, ITALY: Exploring a quiet hilltop town close to the train line between Pisa and Florence in Italy’s Tuscany region. San Miniato is peaceful, off the radar & one of the best places to visit in Tuscany. 🇮🇹 See all of my ITALY videos here →
I caught a train from Pisa to San Miniato and spent half a day walking around one of Tuscany’s most beautiful hilltop towns. The streets were quiet and I hardly saw another tourist - just the way I like it. It got me thinking that compared to other places I’d been in Italy this small town is pretty much undiscovered and untouched by mass tourism.
The train station turned out to be 45-60 minutes from the town itself and whilst there was a bus I decided to take the long and scenic walk to the top. I hoped there would be some kind of footpath but all I could find was the verge of a road - not ideal as there were a couple of blind corners and the morning traffic wasn’t in any mood to drive slow.
I started my day at the Tower of Federico II which is the highest point in the town. It overlooks miles of wonderful rolling hills and would have been perfect back in the day to keep a lookout for invaders. The tower was strategically important in that it helped to protect a busy and valuable trade route between the sea and Florence.
My next stop was to admire the grand and glittering Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Jenesien before wandering along to Piazza della Repubblica which is almost surrounded by the painted walls of the Seminario Vescovile. I continued on through the narrow streets of the town and stopped at a couple of interesting spots to admire the historic buildings and striking open spaces. It was also good to get my drone up in the skies above San Miniato - it gave me another magnificent perspective of the town.

San Miniato, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
The historic center of the city stands in a strategic position on a hill halfway between Florence and Pisa, so it was, in medieval times, the scene of multiple clashes between the two cities, until the definitive Florentine conquest. Seat of a diocese, San Miniato is an important economic and industrial center of the leather area of Ponte a Egola and is famous for its white truffles and wine and oil products. The original nucleus of the city dates back to the 8th century: a group of Longobards, according to an original document dated 713 and preserved in the Archbishop's Archive in Lucca, settled on this hill and built a church dedicated to the martyr Miniato. Frederick II of Swabia built the fortress in the city and had his vicar for Tuscany reside there. Due to this Germanic origin, the city, of Ghibelline tradition, was called throughout the Middle Ages as San Miniato al Tedesco, a name that has remained in use even in the following centuries. After having signed peace with Florence on 31 December 1370, San Miniato adopted the Florentine calendar to replace the Pisan one and changed its name to San Miniato al Fiorentino, and then simply San Miniato. In 1622 he obtained the bishop's chair and therefore the diocese: until then it was in fact part of the diocese of Lucca. The young Napoleon visited San Miniato twice. The first was to have the certificate of nobility of their family: the Buonapartes of Ajaccio had in fact distant origins from Samminiatesi; the certificate was necessary for Napoleon to access the French military academy. Later he returned there during the Italian Campaign, visiting the last survivor of the Tuscan branch of the family, the canon Filippo Buonaparte. A plaque affixed to the Buonaparte palace testifies to the meeting that took place there. The city remained in the Florentine orbit until 1925, when it was ceded to the province of Pisa. The Second World War left its mark on the city due to the massacre of the Duomo. A good part of the medieval buildings was also destroyed, including the Rocca di Federico II, promptly rebuilt in the following years.

**Some History**
San Miniato sits at an historically strategic location atop three small hills where it dominates the lower Arno valley.
In medieval times, San Miniato was on the via Francigena, which was the main connecting route between northern Europe and Rome.
Over the centuries San Miniato was therefore exposed to a constant flow of friendly and hostile armies, traders in all manner of goods and services, and other travelers from near and far.
Archaeological evidence indicates that the site of the city and surrounding area has been settled since at least the paleolithic era. It would have been well known to the Etruscans, and certainly to the Romans, for whom it was a military post called Quarto.
The first mention in historical documents is of a small village organized around a chapel dedicated to San Miniato built by the Lombards in 783.
By the end of the 10th century San Miniato boasted a sizeable population enclosed behind a moat and protected by a castle built by Otto I.
In 1116, the new imperial vicar for Tuscany, Rabodo, established himself at San Miniato, supplanting Florence as the centre of government.
The first walls, with defensive towers, were thrown up in the 12th century during the time that Italy was dominated by Frederick Barbarossa.
During the latter years of the 13th century and the entire 14th century, San Miniato was drawn into the ongoing conflict between the Ghibelline and Guelph forces. Initially Ghibelline, it had become a Guelph city by 1291, allied with Florence and, in 1307, fought with other members of the Guelph league against the Ghibelline Arezzo.
By 1347 San Miniato was under Florentine control, where it remained, but for a brief period from 1367-1370 when, instigated by Pisa, it rebelled against Florence, and for another brief period between 1777 and 1779 during the Napoleonic conquest.
It was still part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany when the Duchy was absorbed into the newly formed Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
During the last three weeks of November, San Miniato hosts a festival devoted to the gastronomically precious white truffle which is harvested in the area around the city. The white truffle is more highly valued than the black truffles found in Umbria and the Marche, and commands very high prices, reflected in the cost of restaurant dishes that incorporate truffles. In 1954 a record-breaking truffle found close to the nearby village of Balconevisi weighed in at 2,520 grams (5.56 lb) and was sent to the United States of America as a gift for President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Current (2019) prices for white truffle in the town are 2500 euros per kilo for first quality and 1800 euros per kilo for second quality.
