Venice, also known as the “The Floating City” or “City of Canals” is one of Italy's most picturesque cities and a very popular destination for travel. With its winding canals and beautiful bridges, its striking architecture, secret gardens and incredibly romantic places, Venice has a lot to offer beyond all the tourist attractions known all over the world. Founded in the 5th century and spread over 118 small islands, the famous Italian City of Venice is one of the most visited cities in Italy. Venice is a city in northeastern Italy, built on a group of small islands, separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges. It is a major Italian port to the Adriatic Sea and the capital of both the Provincia di Venezia and the Regione di Veneto. Venice is unique environmentally, architecturally, and historically and therefore, the lagoon and a part of the city are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was styled la Serenissima (“the most serene”) in the medieval Europe, when it was the greatest seaport and the commercial and cultural link to Asia. One of the world’s oldest tourist and cultural centres, Venice is renowned not only for its beauty but also for its Venetian glass produced in the Island of Murano and the lace produced in the Island of Burano.
Grand Canal (Canal Grande) is the main waterway of Venice, following a natural channel that traces a reverse-S course from San Marco Basilica to Santa Chiara Church and divides the city into two parts. Grand Canal has an average depth of 5 metres, it is more than 3 km long and between 30 and 70 metres wide.

Elba is an Italian island in the Tyrrhenian Sea’s Tuscan Archipelago National Park. It’s known for its beaches, and as Napoleon’s place of exile in 1814–15. In the northern town of Portoferraio, displays at the National Museum of Napoleonic Residences trace the French emperor’s time on the island. In the east, Rio Marina’s Elban Minerals Museum includes reconstructions of mining environments.
Elba is the biggest island of the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest in Italy after Sardinia and Sicily. Together with eight other islands, including Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo, it is part of the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, the largest marine park in Europe.
The island of Elba is famous around the world for harboring French Emperor Napoleon in 1814 during his exile. But its history goes back to prehistory, with the Ilvati tribe from Liguria who named the island Ilva. It was then inhabited first by the Etruscans and later by the Romans, who really appreciated the island and its rich deposits of iron and its mud baths.
There are several memories of its glorious past as we visit the island, from the archaeological findings in its museums to the impressive fortresses and military constructions such as Castello del Volterraio and then on to the beautiful Napoleonic residences of the 1800s such as Palazzina dei Mulini.
What really makes Elba famous and renowned are its clear and blue sea and beautiful beaches. The extraordinary richness of its landscapes, both land and marine, turns the island of Elba into a unique destination in Tuscany. We can say that is a heaven on earth, with nothing to envy of more exotic Caribbean destinations.
In addition, Elba is the perfect place for outdoor sports and activities. Among the most appreciated sports, there is diving and snorkeling in Elba, thanks to its rich seabeds housing lots of different species of fish. But outdoors lovers can also enjoy spending time on land hiking and mountain biking, enjoying a round of golf, a day of sailing or enjoying days of complete relaxation at the thermal baths of San Giovanni. The historic center’s streets - full of interesting places to visit - stretch and wind inside the fortress walls. Despite the seemingly-infinite examples we can find of Florentine rule – who called Portoferraio “Cosmopolis” in those days – others also conquered the scene from time to time, including the Romans. Their influence here is documented by sites like Villa della Linguella, lying along the sea, and Villa delle Grotte, which sits along the provincial road connecting Portoferraio Porto Azzurro.
Signs of French Emperor Napoleon also dot the Province; the Napoleonic Museums inside Villa dei Mulini and Villa San Martino in the historic center narrate his exile on Elba. Another excellent symbol of Elba’s past is the Castello del Volterraio, on the same-named street linking the Commune of Rio Elba to Magazzini. The Castle was constructed by the Pisani during their rule, intended as a lookout point; trekkers should certainly make the visit, as the panoramic view over the central part of the Island is stupendous.

Tuscany, with its spectacular cities, towns, and scenery, is one of Italy's top vacation destinations. Tuscany's many attractions include historic cities and art-filled museums and churches, great wine and food, medieval hill towns, beaches, and beautiful countryside.
Each part of the Tuscany region has its own unique personality. And while it's hard to narrow down a best-of list in a region of travel superlatives, the following are TripSavvy's top 10 places to visit, for medieval and Renaissance architecture, gorgeous scenery and of course, the food and wine.
Florence
Florence, in the heart of Tuscany, is one of Italy's top cities to visit. Florence is an important Renaissance architecture and art center with several excellent museums. Florence's cathedral, or Duomo, with its famous dome, and its Baptistery are architectural wonders that are not to be missed.
Many visitors use Florence as their base for winery tours or day trips to other towns in the region. Visit the Museo Galileo or the Palazzo Strozzi to get a feel for the history and culture of the area.
Siena
Siena is a classic medieval hill town in Tuscany famous for its large fan-shaped piazza the Piazza del Campo, dominated by its bell tower, the Torre del Mangia.
Siena's annual summer horse race, Il Palio, is about as different from the Kentucky Derby as one can imagine: Bareback riders race the horses along the city's cobblestone streets, in keeping with medieval tradition.
Off the main piazza, Siena's medieval streets are lined with shops and rustic trattoria serving traditional Tuscan cuisine. Find a cozy spot, preferably one filled with Italians, and sample local fare paired with a nice bottle of regional wine.
Pisa
Pisa, in northern Tuscany, is famous for its leaning tower, which all visitors must climb and take a good touristy photo with. You'll be in the Pizza dei Miracoli, where you can admire the cathedral and the baptistery, both of which date back to the Italian Renaissance.
Besides its tower, Pisa has much more to do and see. To visit its historic Piazza dei Cavalieri, take a stroll along the Arno River. And before you leave Pisa, be sure to try the local delicacy, a chickpea flour bread called cecina.
If you visit Pisa in June, you're in for a treat. That's when the city holds a festival to honor its patron saint San Ranieri during its annual Giugno Pisano.
Lucca
Lucca is famous for its Renaissance-era wall which encircles the city, and its cobblestone streets. Walking and bicycling paths and gardens sit atop the wall, which allows visitors to walk completely around Lucca's historic center.
In addition to being home to several historic cathedrals, Lucca has several well-preserved towers that provide fabulous views of the city and beyond.
Be sure to check out the home of the famous opera composer Giacomo Puccini, which is a popular museum in Lucca. And for authentic regional dishes like tortelli lucchese or zuppa di farro all lucchese, visit one of Lucca's excellent restaurants, such as Buralli or La Buca di Sant'Antonio.
Cortona
Cortona is the Tuscan hill town made famous by Francis Mayes in her book Under the Tuscan Sun. Surrounded by 3,000-year-old Etruscan walls, Cortona retains much of its history through its layers of architecture.
Cortona's stately buildings include the Abbazia Farneta and the Chiesa San Francesco. This area has a large American expatriate community so tourists from the States will find plenty of English speakers.
San Gimignano
San Gimignano, known as the City of Beautiful Towers, is a classic medieval walled hill town famous for its 14 surviving medieval towers. These create a distinctive skyline visible from the surrounding countryside.
Be sure to visit the Museo Estrusco and the historic Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta. For local flavor, try one of the many cinghiale (wild boar) dishes at Cum Quibus or Ristorante San Martino.
Chianti Classico Wine Region
The Chianti Classico wine region lies between the larger cities of Florence and Siena and is a very interesting area to visit. The Chianti region has picturesque villages like Greve, and of course, many fine wineries. Start your wine tasting is at Barone Ricasoli Winery and Brolio Castle.
