Mapanuepe Lake, San Marcelino, Zambales| Trail Guide

Mapanuepe Lake is a freshwater lake located in the province of Zambales in the Philippines. The lake was created after the cataclysmic eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. Lahars following the eruption blocked the drainage of Mapanuepe River, south of the volcano, flooding Mapanuepe Valley together with its settlements. Only the steeple of the church protruding out of the water remained from one of the villages.

Check out my blog post for more details about Mt. Bagang and Liwliwa Beach:

HOW TO GET TO MT. BAGANG FROM MANILA
From Pasay, Cubao, or Monumento terminal, board a Victory Liner bus bound to Iba. Alight in front of the San Marcelino City Hall. Alternatively, you can take a bus to Olongapo. From Olongapo, take a UV Express to San Marcelino.

From San Marcelino, you can either rent a kuliglig (P1,200 for up to 10 pax) to Barangay Sta. Fe, or take a trike to the lahar crossing in Sta. Fe (P100 for 3 pax), then ask locals around to bring you to Brgy. Sta. Fe using a carabao cart (yes, it's real carabao at the helm. P600 for 5 pax)

From Brgy. Sta. Fe, you will need to take a jeepney to the base of the mountain. The jeepney ride takes around 30 minutes or so. It costs P1,200, good for 8-10 persons. The rental covers the trip to the base and from the base to a tricycle terminal where you hire a trike to take you to the highway where Manila-bound buses are found.

HOW TO GET TO LIWLIWA BEACH FROM MT. BAGANG
Take a bus (both A/C and non-AC buses are available) going to Iba or San Felipe at the San Marcelino tricycle terminal. Fare shouldn't beyond P50. At San Felipe, take a tricycle to Liwliwa Beach.

Zambales - Capones | Nagsasa | Talisayen | Anawangin

This video puts together snaps and clips of our 3-day and 2-night Zambales trip. For more details, check out my blog post -

MT. PIMMAYONG 4x4 CLIMB - San Marcelino, Zambales (April 12, 2022 )

We left around 5:15am in the morning and met up with Sir Khen and Sir Robert at Petron Lakeshore around 6:45am. After having breakfast, we left for San Marcelino, Zambales, and arrived at the dike in Brgy. Nagbunga at around 10am. From there, we crossed the lahar fields of the Santo Tomas River to reach Brgy. Santa Fe at the other side. We went to the Brgy. Hall to ask if our 4x4 vehicles can go up Mt. Pimmayong and how to get a guide to Tarudak Falls. Kuya Alejandro Dupra guided us to the foot of the mountain and gave us instructions on where to camp and where to find a guide at the summit. After that, we were on our own. The trail was rocky and was just wide enough for our vehicles to pass but some of the vegetation along the side had branches that protruded and scrapped on the side of our vehicles. When we turned right towards the climb to the summit, the trail became harder. The rocks were bigger, there were more ruts to avoid, and there were humps from the drainage canals that crossed the trail causing my bike rack to hit the ground. Around halfway to the summit, there was a steep climb so we decided to remove the bikes and fold the bike rack to lighten the load of our vehicle and provide more ground clearance. We had to push our bikes from that point on until we reached the summit. When we were nearing the summit, there were dark clouds forming above. Luckily, it did not rain for it would have been more difficult to climb if the trail was slippery and wet. The 360-degree view at the summit was spectacular and really worth the sacrifices that we made. From there, we could see the mountains of San Marcelino with Mt. Bagang in the middle of the lahar fields. But this is not the end of our journey. We had to find Kuya Carlos, who lives up here in the mountain. He would be the one to guide us the next day to Tarudak Falls. We continued on our journey towards the forested part of the mountain riding on our bikes while our 4x4 vehicles followed behind us. Slowly we were surrounded by more and more trees until we reached a part where we could no longer see the adjacent mountains and the lahar fields below. The flat terrain slowly changed to descents but still no sign of Kuya Carlos. We were afraid that we went past his house and were already going down the other side of the mountain until finally we saw an old bulldozer parked along the right side of the trail and a house with a fence on the left side. This was the house of Kuya Carlos. There was no cell signal at our current location so Sir Danny and Sir Robert went back to the part of the trail where they were able to get a signal and check if it was a good spot to setup camp. In the end, we decided to camp at Kuya Carlos’s place where there was a lot of flat ground. We asked Kuya Carlos, who was a katutubo, if we can camp at his place for the night and he happily obliged.
