We took an hour bus ride from the bustling city of Guadalajara to the quiet relaxed lakeside town of Ajijic, Jalisco. #Ajijic is sitting on the coast of the largest lake in Mexico, #LakeChapala. There are a few towns lining the Lake’s coast but Ajijic has a special draw to the town. It’s known as a Canadian and American retiree paradise.
We wondered why there was such a huge ex-pat community and what the big draw is. So, we took a few days to explore the town and see for ourselves what the big deal is.

Thermal waters at Balneario in Ajijic, Mexico #shorts
Balneario Spa (& hotel) in San Juan Cosala is a wonderful way to spend a day while visiting Lake Chapala. You can get to San Juan Cosala from Ajijic by local bus (5 pesos), taxi (50 pesos) or car. It is less than 10 kilometers away. The admission to Balneario Spa & Thermal Waters is a very reasonable 140 pesos. There are 5 pools there of varying warm temperatures. The pools are fed from underground thermal waters and very relaxing as well as theraputic. Plan to spend an entire day enjoying the waters and the beautiful views of Lake Chapala and the mountains on the the south shore, including Mt. Garcia, the tallest in the area.
In addition to the thermal waters, for a small additional fee, (40 pesos in 2011) you can submerge yourself in various hydrotherapies:
Thalassotherapy (magnesium, sodium salts and seaweed)
Fitotherpy (medicinal plants)
Mineral Treated Mud
Coffee therapy
Therapy of the Day (This one changes everyday with different ingredients like wine ,Jamaica, maguey extract or apple vinegar)
Temazcal: Ancient Natural Steam Room
Reflexology river (walk in this river to enjoy a relaxing experience for your feet)
