Places to see in ( Puglia - Italy )
Places to see in ( Puglia - Italy )
Puglia, a southern region forming the heel of Italy’s “boot,” is known for its whitewashed hill towns, centuries-old farmland and hundreds of kilometers of Mediterranean coastline. Capital Bari is a vibrant port and university town, while Lecce is known as “Florence of the South” for its baroque architecture. Alberobello and the Itria Valley are home to “trulli,” stone huts with distinctive conical roofs.
Puglia is Italy’s ascendant region, a place where savvy travellers bored or worn down by the crowds of Campania and Tuscany escape for something a bit less frenetic and manicured. Top of the list for prospective newcomers is the food. Puglia’s cucina povera is about as earthy as Italian cuisine gets without eating it straight out of the soil. Then there’s the exuberant architecture, best summarised by the word ‘baroque’ and exhibited in all its finery in the glittering ‘Florence of the South’, Lecce, and its smaller sibling, Gallipoli.
With the longest coastline of any region in mainland Italy, Puglia is larger than many people realise. In the north, the spur of land sticking out into the Adriatic is occupied by the balmy microclimates of the Gargano peninsula, a kind of miniature Amalfi with fewer poseurs. The Italian boot’s ‘stiletto’ hosts the land of Salento, a dry scrubby region famous for its wines, and bloodthirsty Greek and Turkish history. In between lies the Valle d’Itria, a karstic depression populated by vastly contrasting medieval towns that have little in common apart from their haunting beauty. Of the larger cities, Brindisi, an erstwhile Roman settlement, is one of the major departure points for Greece (by ferry), while Puglia’s largest metropolis, Bari has a university and trendier inclinations.

Much has been discussed about its origins, but it is certain that it already existed in the 4th century. B.C. A legend has it that it was Perseus, son of Jupiter, who founded 'Jovis natio'. Giovinazzo is present in the Tabula Peutingeriana with the name of Natiolum.
We find the toponym Juvenatium in a document from the year 938 AD relating to the reconstruction of the Church of San Felic, where the Greek Cinnamo index et spartharicus of Jebenatia is mentioned.

Rodi Garganico, Gargano - Puglia, Italy
If you are planning to visit Gargano, in Puglia - Italy, don’t miss the opportunity to visit Rodi Garganico too, a village which stands on a small promontory overlooking the sea and still preserves some towers and archaeological treasures that tell the ancient history of the Greek and Roman colony.
Here some suggestions on FOOD and ACCOMMODATIONS:
Where to have a MEAL: Eco Del Mare, Via Lungomare, 33, 71018 San Menaio, +39 0884968410
ACCOMMODATIONS: B&B ELI, Via Antonio Gramsci, 14, 71012 Rodi Garganico, +39 3389140660
The blue of the sea beds, the white of the houses and the orange of citrus trees: these are the colors of Rodi Garganico, wonderful of Gargano National Park.
The castle, royal residence of the King Ferdinand of Aragon, overlooks the sea, with the towers and the impressive city walls. The historic centre, surrounded by keeps, is a maze of winding streets, sloping stairs, arches and small gardens, where you are amazed by the gentle whitewashed houses with red roof, built one on the other as a way to protect the town from pirates attacks.
Don’t miss the churches of San Nicola of Myra and San Pietro and the Sanctuary of Madonna della Libera, to visit before arriving at the belvedere, where there used to be the main entrance gate. From here, you can enjoy a breathless view, extending from the Convent of the Capuchins to the coast.
Rodi is a destination not to miss, thanks to its extraordinary natural heritage: the coast surrounds the town, with the beaches of Ponente (West) and Levante (East), while in the hinterland, the scents of citrus trees and the lush vegetation of the Umbra Forest, not far away from here, enthral and seduce.

Halfway between Florence and Rome, between the Tuscia Viterbese and the Land of Santa Caterina, one of the five municipalities of the Val d'Orcia, a World Heritage Site since 2004. There is a rocky cliff that touches the sky. The place has been chosen by man since time immemorial, as the control and defense of a vast territory. The cliff dominates the Orcia and Paglia valleys, crossed by the Via Francigena, which found a fortified and safe place in Radicofani, and by the Vie Traverse between Umbria and Maremma. Radicofani was made up of four villages, one of which Viclanus, had Etruscan-Roman origins. The Lombards structure the territory, in fact the toponym Radicofani derives from the name of the Lombard king: Rachis, “Rachis hofen” = “Court of Rachis”. Already remembered in 973 already cum sua castro ... with its fortifications. Its history is inextricably linked to the Via Francigena and Ghino di Tacco (see below)
✍️ Curiosity:
✱At the turn of the first millennium, numerous pilgrims crossed Europe to go in prayer to the tomb of the Apostle Peter in Rome or to continue towards the Holy Land, Jerusalem. The practice of pilgrimage assumed such importance that real ways of faith developed, dotted with stopping places, villages and abbeys to host pilgrims. Among the most important streets, the Via Francigena still represents the main route today.
The name Francigena indicates the road or routes that from the Land of the Franks allowed pilgrims from across the Alps to reach Rome. The original journey, from Canterbury to Rome was 1600 kilometers and the difficulty of the journey which in itself represented an act of penance, symbolically and materially handed the pilgrim into the hands of God. The walking route in fact exposed believers to all sorts of danger. , at fairs and bad weather. This is the reason why villages and then cities such as Siena and San Gimignano and other villages rich in well-known and lesser-known works of art developed along the axis of the Francigena.
✱In 1297 the fortress was conquered by the famous brigand / soldier of fortune Ghino di Tacco.
Ghino di Tacco, the Robin Hood of the Val d’Orcia:
When Ghino's father and uncle are captured and beheaded in Piazza del Campo in Siena, he escapes and becomes, in the eyes of the established power, an outlaw. He goes into hiding like a bandit, until, in 1297, helped by a group of companions, he manages to conquer the Rocca di Radicofani. Thanks to its privileged position, Ghino controls the traffic of goods and people passing through the Val d’Orcia to Rome. He carries out raids and thefts, yes, but legend has it that he does it only to the detriment of wealthy travelers, without ever twisting a hair to the poor.
Ghino has a fiery temperament. He risks a lot when he goes as far as Rome to avenge the death of his father and uncle: he looks for Judge Benincasa who sentenced them to death. He breaks into the Capitol buildings, finds him and cuts off his head. Also thanks to the knights who flank him, he manages to escape and return to Radicofani where he exhibits the head of Benincasa on the Rocca, as a warning to anyone.
✱🧡“Radicofani stands out for its historic center, well preserved, typical, cozy and with a neat street furniture. Tourists feel welcomed thanks to an easily accessible information point, and for gourmets the offer of typical products is varied and rich. Elsa, ghost visitor Touring Club Italy

Places to see in ( Taranto - Italy ) Ponte Girevole
Places to see in ( Taranto - Italy ) Ponte Girevole
The bridge of San Francesco di Paola in Taranto is the structure that connects the island of Borgo Antico with the peninsula of Borgo Nuovo. Inaugurated on 22 May 1887 by Admiral Ferdinando Acton , the bridge dominates a navigable canal 400 meters long and 73 meters wide, which joins the Mar Grande to the Mar Piccolo.
Built by the Italian industrial construction company ( Castellammare di Stabia ) by Alfredo Cottrau , based on a project by Ing. Giuseppe Messina who directed the construction work, originally consisted of a large six-sided arch in wood and metal, divided into two arms that turned independently from one another around a vertical pin placed on a shoulder. The operation took place thanks to hydraulic turbines powered by a large tank located on the adjacent Aragonese Castle , capable of 600 cubic meters of water that in fall operated the two arms of the bridge.
The structure was subsequently modernized in the years 1957 - 1958 , introducing an electrical operation, but keeping the engineering principles of the then constituting Directorate of military engineering for the Navy unaltered. The project was carried out by the Società Nazionale Officine di Savigliano, for everything concerning the mechanical organs and electrical controls. The new bridge was inaugurated by the President of the Republic Giovanni Gronchi on 10 March 1958 , and was named after San Francesco di Paola , protector of the sea people.
The bridge currently measures 89.9 meters in length and 9.3 meters in width. The revolving bridge is periodically subjected to accurate maintenance interventions, both of the mechanical parts and of the entire metal structure. Each half-bridge that actually constitutes its structure, rotates around a central pivot anchored by means of bolts to the concrete quay, moving over a rack by means of a pinion always in a grip driven by an electric motor. Everything is based on a rolling track consisting of a series of steel cylinders. The opening of the bridge is necessary to allow the passage of large military ships directed to the docks and basins of the Navy Arsenal located in the Mar Piccolo for maintenance work. The management of the opening,Military Navy .
The procedures for opening and closing the bridge require a total of about twenty minutes, the maneuvers are conducted from the inside of two cockpits located near each half-bridge, while four workers check the correct operation of the automatic devices, ready to intervene in failure of the same.
The first manual operations to be carried out are those of removing the eight coverings and uncoupling the two bolts located at the ends, which have the purpose of making the bridge stable when it is closed. The actual opening begins with the rotation of about 45 ° of the half-bridge on the Borgo Antico side, then with the 90 ° rotation of the Borgo Nuovo half-bridge, followed by the completion of the rotation of the Borgo Antico side.
The revolving bridge is the main symbol of the city of Taranto, and can be considered for its uniqueness a marvelous naval engineering work . Moreover, the transit of ships with the crew on the bridge is a very evocative moment for family members and friends who greet their loved ones from the seafront.
