Inside Mexico’s Craziest Market - WE WERE SHOCKED! (our first time in Mexico City) | CDMX, Mexico

We’ve made it to Mexico City! In this video, we are experiencing the market culture in Mexico City (CDMX). We started at, La Merced Market, which is one of the largest and most vibrant markets in Mexico City (CDMX). La Merced can be a bit overwhelming at first, with its labyrinthine streets and endless rows of stalls and vendors. But it's all part of the experience, and we quickly got swept up in the excitement and energy of the place. The market is a true feast for the senses, with the smells, sounds, and colors of Mexico all around you.

We then visited Mercado Sonora, which is a vibrant and bustling market located right next to La Merced. You can find a wide variety of products, from traditional Mexican crafts and souvenirs to exotic herbs, spices, and potions used in traditional folk medicine.

After visiting Mercado Sonora, we continued our exploration of Mexico City by checking out some local establishments. We stopped at a pulqueria, which is a traditional Mexican bar that specializes in pulque, a fermented beverage made from the sap of the agave plant. Next, we visited a cantina, which is another type of traditional Mexican bar. Finally, we took a leisurely stroll around the old town of Mexico City, soaking up the rich history and vibrant culture of the area.

Don't miss this incredible tour with Bondabu in CDMX:

OAXACA, MEXICO - We've NEVER seen this before!!

Oaxaca is extraordinary! We're going behind the scenes to learn about alebrijes, black pottery, & more!
►Start your FREE TRIAL of Rocket Spanish at:

This video is Part 2 of our Oaxaca, Mexico video series. In this travel vlog, we visit three special towns just outside of Oaxaca City:
1. San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
2. San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca
3. Santo Tomás Jalieza, Oaxaca

First, we went to San Bartolo Coyotepec to see a live demonstration of traditional Oaxacan pottery making. We learn how the clay is harvested, molded, refined, carved, and cooked in underground ovens to create either black or brown pottery. The work that goes into each piece is astonishing!

Next, we drove to San Martin Tilcajete where we visited the famous alebrijes workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles. Disney Pixar actually came to this exact location while doing research for the movie Coco. It blew our minds to learn how laborious the process of making alebrijes is. People come to this workshop from all over the world to learn how to be a master at carving and painting Oaxaca alebrijes.

Before heading to our last stop, we enjoyed our tour guide’s “car bar” where we sampled some of their very own mezcal. Spoiler alert: Oaxacan Mezcal is SO GOOD!

Finally, we drove down the road to Santo Tomas Jalieza to learn how intricate, hand-woven textiles are made. We learned that it’s common for one piece to take 3, 7-hour days (21 hours total) to create just one!

It’s hard not to LOVE Oaxaca, Mexico after learning more about its culture. The patience, dedication, and love that all of these artisans have for their craft is inspiring. After spending one week in Oaxaca, we can safely say that it’s become one of our all-time favorite places in Mexico. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel to see our next Oaxaca video!

A Tour of OAXACA City / Mitla & Tule / Mexico Travel 2023

Oaxaca City is located in southern Mexico and is the capital of the eponymous Mexican state of Oaxaca. The state is best known for its indigenous peoples and cultures- Zapotec and Mixtec, as well as for the traditional Oaxacan food. The city is often called the food capital of Mexico.
Oaxaca, together with the nearby archeological site of Monte Albán, was designated in 1987 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Oaxaca city is a very lively and pretty place where you can wander around the colorful streets and spend time in the city's main square - Zocalo, have a delicious Mexican dish and enjoy the vibrant ambiance.
Oaxaca is also home of mezcal and where more than 90% of all Mexico mezcal is produced. Mezcal is the national spirit of Mexico.
Mezcal is a distilled alcoholic beverage. It is made from agave (specifically Agave americana)
Tequila is a form of mezcal, though they are distilled differently — mezcal is cooked in an underground oven, and tequila is boiled.
You can join one of the many mezcal tours, learn about the process of making and taste different sorts of mezcal drinks.
The video also features the archaeological site and ruins of Mitla, which is located about 44km from Oaxaca and is associated with the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures.
The video ends with a visit of Tule, located also in the state of Oaxaca. The city is popular with its Tree of Tule - one of the world's oldest trees, considered to be more than 2000 years old.

Things to do in Oaxaca:

Explore San Bartolo De Coyotopec, San Martin Tilcajete, Teotitlan: Barro Negro, Alebrijes & Textiles Tour
Hours: Tour times vary
Cost: $72.00 per person
Total time: 5 hours (includes drive time)
AirBnb Experience Website:
Jacob & Maria Angeles Workshop Website:

We booked this tour through AirBnb after seeing it on Tangerine Travels. This is a great tour if you want to learn about the artisan culture in Oaxaca. Pack snacks as this tour runs straight through without stopping for lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing behind the scenes and learning the ancient methods used at each stop. Highly recommend!

Lucha Libre
Hours: 6pm – 9pm
Cost: Front row for two- 150 pesos, general admission 65 pesos per person
Total time: 3 hours
Website:
We added this event last minute and bought tickets through Whatsapp. We decided to purchase front row which was a wise choice! The crowd & atmosphere was incredible! The fighters really embraced their roles which made the experience a fun one! This is an outdoor arena but situated under a large tent. Bring extra pesos for snacks, drinks, and merchandise. Street parking is available.

Hierve El Agua
Hours: 9am – 5pm
Cost: 25 pesos per person & 50 pesos for parking
Total time: Up to you!
Website:

We were so excited to hear that Hierve El Agua opened a couple weeks prior to our arrival into Oaxaca. This was our number one thing to do, and it did not disappoint! We recommend going as soon as they open. It’s about an hour and half from Oaxaca so leave as early as possible to arrive as they open. You’ll want to be sure to visit on a clear day as the road there turns into a very windy dirt road up the mountain with some very steep parts. If it rains, the road will become dangerous and there’s a couple bridges you must cross on the way that are prone to flooding. Tour buses are available for transport at the bottom of the mountain in the village below. There are 3 large pools to swim in and a short hike. You can bring a picnic and snacks, or they have vendors with everything you need there. It’s an absolutely stunning experience, we could have spent all day there!

Dia De Muertos
Hours: No set hours
Cost: Free!
Total time: Up to you!

Due to COVID, I don’t believe there was as much going on in El Centro as in the past years, but it was still a great experience to be a part of. There were a few main streets where most of the people gathered a few bands playing a few short parades. With the city décor, muchas ofrendas, face-painting, food & more it makes for a unique experience!

Temazcal
Hours: Hours vary per appointment
Cost: 500 pesos per person
Total time: 2 hours
Read about ourTemazcal experience here:
Website for booking and information:
or email antonio25468@gmail for reservations.

This traditional sweat lodge is tucked away in a village 15 minutes from the center of Oaxaca. This experience comes with 30-50 minutes in the sauna and an hour-long full body massage. This was such a special tradition to experience and a fantastic way to end our trip. Highly recommend!

Wilson’s Tips for Oaxaca:
Hire a driver: our car rental plans fell through and we ended up connecting with a local through our Airbnb house manager. Not only was his pricing reasonable, but this also made our week effort free as we no longer had to worry about driving, parking or paying for gas. Sometimes hiring a local driver may be a cheaper option than renting.

Tacos Al Pastor: We highly recommend you search for local taco vendors that sell tacos al pastor! We tried as many places as possible and most were delicious and such a great price!

Picking an alebrije: Prior to choosing an alebrije tour, we recommend you ask if they offer an opportunity to discover what your own alebrije is. We toured the Jacob & Maria Angeles workshop and were pleased to discover what our alebrijes were and were able to take home our very own pieces.
