OAXACA, MEXICO | The Perfect Oaxaca Travel Itinerary (Coast to the Mountains in 2-3 weeks)

Oaxaca lies in the southwest of Mexico. It’s made up of a vast coastline and rugged mountains, with narrow valleys, canyons and ravines between them. Oaxaca is best known for its unique cuisine as well as its indigenous people and cultures. The largest indigenous groups are the Zapotecs and the Mixtecs, but there are sixteen groups that are officially recognized. These cultures have survived better than most others in Mexico thanks to the state's isolating terrain and commitment to honoring traditions. In this video, we will show you the perfect Oaxaca itinerary. This itinerary is recommended for at least a 14 day stay in Oaxaca and can be completed by public transportation, rental car, or a mix of both!

Stop 1: Puerto Escondido
How to get here: Direct flights from Mexico City and Guadalajara
Recommended stay: 3-5 days

Stop 2: Mazunte
How to get here: Bus from Puerto Escondido to Pochutla and tell the bus driver that you want to get off at San Antonio. From there, you’ll have to take a taxi or local collectivo.
Recommended stay: 1-2 days

Stop 3: Zipolite
How to get here: 20-minute taxi ride from Mazunte
Recommended stay: 1-2 days

Stop 4: San José del Pacifico
How to get here: Bus from Lineas Unidas Bus station in Zipolite directly to José del Pacifico
Recommended stay: 2-3 days

Stop 5: Oaxaca City
How to get here: Bus from San José del Pacifico main road to Oaxaca City (bus leaves every hour)
Recommended stay: 7 days including day trips as mentioned below

Stop 6: Mitla
How to get there? Take a bus or rent a car from Oaxaca City, which will take you here in approximately 1 hour.
Recommended stay: day trip

Stop 7: Hierve el Agua
How to get there? Located 70 kms or 43 miles from Oaxaca City, this is another site you can do as a day trip. You can rent a car or take a tour from Oaxaca. Alternatively, you can come by collectivo from Mitla.
Recommended stay: day trip

Stop 8: Pueblos Mancomunados
How to get there? There are buses to Cuajimoloyas and Benito Juárez that leave from the “second class” bus station in Oaxaca City a few times a day. The driver will drop you off near the “tourist office” where you can book your activities and accommodation.
Recommended stay: 1-5 days

Where to next?
After exploring the highlights of Oaxaca, you can continue your journey across other states in Mexico. The most common travel route goes to the southeast to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. It’s possible to take the ADO night bus from Oaxaca City, which takes about 12 hours.

Alternatively, you can head to the north towards Puebla and Mexico City. Puebla is another beautiful city and gateway to the surrounding mountains and volcanoes. It takes about 4 hours to get here.

A Visit to TOLUCA, Estado de Mexico

In this episode, we visit the capital city of the State of Mexico, Toluca de Lerdo, or just Toluca. Toluca gets a bad rap in CDMX, but we think it's somewhat unfair. Being so close in proximity to Mexico City, this little big city naturally suffers by comparison to its cosmopolitan neighbor to the east, but it offers a very different experience. Toluca is nestled in a mountainous pine forest and is much colder than most of Mexico, being the highest altitude capital city in North America.

We visit the Cosmovitral Jardín Botánico de Toluca, the Catedral de Toluca, and several other attractions.

Among the lush formal gardens sits the majestic Hacienda de San Antonio. The unspoiled natural beauty is nearly eclipsed by the spectacular snow capped Volcan de Colima rising in the distance. This historically pertinent edifice has a storied past. Discover the wonders of this mountainous region and bask in the eternal spring like weather.

Whether you arrive to enjoy the wide range of outdoor activities or to revive in a classically relaxing atmosphere the Hacienda
becomes the stage for your next Mexican getaway.

The amazing on site restaurant is known for its fine dining and the social center of hacienda.

There are only 8 suites in total which makes this a wonderful place for groups, small events and weddings. There at 5 ground floor Superior Suites of the Hacienda de San Antonio each that reflect the rich traditions of Mexico’s arts and crafts. Each Suite is individually decorated by some of the country’s leading artisans, creating unique spaces with their own fascinating stories. Prices start at $810 per night.

The three Grand Suites are on the second floor and offer sumptuous light filled rooms and are so warm and welcoming you will want to order room service and stay in. But that may be a mistake as this grand dame boutique hotel beckons your attention.

This is certainly one of Mexico’s Finest Boutique Hotels.

San Antonio Downtown Drive [4K] | Texas | United States

San Antonio (in Spanish, Saint Anthony), officially the City of San Antonio, is the seventh-most populous city in the United States, and the second-most populous city in both Texas and the Southern United States, with 1,547,253 residents in 2019. Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, the city became the first chartered civil settlement in present-day Texas in 1731. The area was still part of the Spanish Empire, and later of the Mexican Republic. It is the state's oldest municipality, having celebrated its 300th anniversary on May 1, 2018.

The city's deep history is contrasted with its rapid growth over the past few decades. It was the fastest-growing of the top ten largest cities in the United States from 2000 to 2010, and the second from 1990 to 2000. Straddling the regional divide between South and Central Texas, San Antonio anchors the southwestern corner of an urban mega region colloquially known as the Texas Triangle. The Greater San Antonio and Greater Austin areas are separated from each other by 80 miles along Interstate 35.

San Antonio serves as the seat of Bexar County; San Antonio is the center of the San Antonio–New Braunfels metropolitan statistical area. Commonly called Greater San Antonio, the metro area has a population of 2,550,960 based on the 2019 U.S. census estimate, making it the 24th-largest metropolitan area in the United States and third-largest in Texas.

San Antonio was named by a 1691 Spanish expedition for the Portuguese priest Saint Anthony of Padua, whose feast day is June 13. The city contains five 18th-century Spanish frontier missions, including The Alamo and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which together were designated UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2015. Other notable attractions include the River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, SeaWorld, the Alamo Bowl, and Marriage Island. Commercial entertainment includes Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Morgan's Wonderland amusement parks. According to the San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city is visited by about 32 million tourists a year. It is home to the five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, and hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, one of the largest such events in the U.S.

The U.S. Armed Forces have numerous facilities in and around San Antonio; Fort Sam Houston is the only one within the city limits. Lackland Air Force Base, Randolph Air Force Base, Lackland AFB/Kelly Field Annex, Camp Bullis, and Camp Stanley are outside the city limits. Kelly Air Force Base operated out of San Antonio until 2001, when the airfield was transferred to Lackland AFB. The remaining parts of the base were developed as Port San Antonio, an industrial/business park and aerospace complex.

San Antonio is home to six Fortune 500 companies and the South Texas Medical Center, the only medical research and care provider in the South Texas region.

San Antonio is a popular tourist destination. The Alamo Mission in San Antonio (The Alamo), located in Downtown, is Texas' top tourist attraction. Because of the mission, San Antonio is often called Alamo City.

The River Walk, which meanders through the Downtown area, is the city's second-most-visited attraction, giving it the additional nickname of River City. Extended an additional 13 miles between 2009 and 2013, the landscaped walking and bike path line the San Antonio River from the Museum Reach beginning in Brackenridge Park through downtown, Downtown Reach, past the Blue Star's Eagleland to the Mission Reach ending near Loop 410 South past Mission Espada.

The Downtown area also features San Fernando Cathedral, The Majestic Theatre, Hemisfair (home of the Tower of the Americas, and UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures), La Villita, Market Square, the Spanish Governor's Palace, and the historic Menger Hotel. The Fairmount Hotel, built in 1906 and San Antonio's second oldest hotel, is in the Guinness World Records as one of the heaviest buildings ever moved intact. It was placed in its new location, three blocks south of the Alamo, over four days in 1985, and cost $650,000 to move.
