► About Today's Location
Join me on a walking tour around Salisbury in the northern suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. Salisbury is regarded as one of the poorer areas of Adelaide. If you are watching from outside of Australia, then you probably can't tell that this is an underprivileged area. We are pretty lucky here.
Founded in 1848, Salisbury takes its name from Salisbury in England. Salisbury started as a service centre for the surrounding wheat and hay farms. The Post Office opened in 1850. Situated 25km from the South Australian capital - Adelaide, Salisbury today has an abundance of parks, shops, cafes and restaurants.

Day Trip to SALISBURY & STONEHENGE Vlog | Visiting a medieval cathedral city & a wonder of the world
Day Trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge | Travel Vlog✨
In this vlog, we are taking the bus from Bournemouth City Centre to Salisbury. The cathedral city of Salisbury is steeped in history and is one of the finest tourist destinations in Wiltshire. The city retains much of its medieval centre, with a delightful market square and traditional shopping streets, which lead to the Cathedral. Salisbury cathedral is visually stunning, the colossal spire stands at 123m, while the front façade is ornately carved. Housed in the cathedral is the world's oldest clock and the Magna Carta, an ancient 1215 charter that details the power and limits of the King.
Salisbury is also 9 miles from Stonehenge. So we take the bus there and we take a walk through 5000 years of history. Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the world and the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe. It consists of an outer ring of vertical sarsen standing stones, each around 13 feet high, seven feet wide, and weighing around 25 tons, topped by connecting horizontal lintel stones.

Hahndorf is located in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, and is classified as Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. It is only less than half an hour drive from Adelaide CBD.
It’s known for its original German-style architecture and artisanal food. Stroll the tree-lined main street and discover shops, leather smith, galleries, German-style pubs, jeweler, a craft brewery, winery cellar doors, gin distillery, free cheese tasting, chocolatier, traditional sweet shops, multicultural restaurants and cafés, mini-golf and strawberry picking.
Hahndorf is very popular among locals and tourists. If you plan for a day trip, you should try to get there early to avoid the crowds, limited parking and long queues at restaurants. We had a really good day. Kids love strawberry picking the most and we love German beer.
Wilton Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around three miles west of Salisbury, is the town of Wilton.
Geographically, Wilton is situated at the confluence of the River Nadder and River Wylye, the latter of which gives the town its name (literally translating to 'farm on the River Wylye' in Old English). In turn, the county of Wiltshire is named after Wilton, although the county town is Trowbridge.
In the 8th century, Wilton Abbey was established as a college for priests. This was later converted to a Benedictine nunnery. In 871 King Alfred the Great's army faced off with the Vikings at the Battle of Wilton. In the aftermath, a truce was agreed upon between the two armies. Wilton would be subject to another Viking attack in 1003 when Sweyn Forkbeard burned the town.
In circa 1100 Wilton was granted its first charter by Henry I. By the 16th century it was home to a growing cloth industry. This was followed in the 18th century by a carpet manufacturing industry, and in the 19th century by the production of felt. The town would become known for the Wilton Weave - a special method of carpet making using face-to-face looms.
In 1856 the first railway station opened in Wilton, followed by a second in 1859. The first was situated on a branch line between Salisbury and Westbury, and was renamed from 'Wilton' to 'Wilton North' in 1949. The second was known as 'Wilton South', and was part of the West of England Main Line from Basingstoke to Exeter. In 1955 Wilton North closed, and in 1966 Wilton South fell victim to the notorious Beeching Axe, which saw over 2,000 stations across Britain close in a controversial attempt to promote motorway travel. Today, public transport to Wilton consists of bus services to Salisbury and other nearby settlements. It should be noted that Wilton is accessible on foot from Salisbury, providing pedestrians are willing to walk three miles.

Salisbury Walk: City Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around 20 miles northwest of Southampton, is the city of Salisbury.
The history of the settlement that we refer to today as Salisbury goes back to the early 13th century. Prior to this, an earlier settlement, thought to be inhabited as early as 400 BC, grew around a hill situated two miles to its north. This is referred to as Old Sarum.
During the Norman era, a castle and a cathedral were built in Old Sarum. A dispute emerged between the clergy and the military personnel garrisoned at the castle there, allegedly due to an insufficient supply of water. It was decided that a new cathedral would be built from scratch away from the castle. According to a legend, the Bishop of Old Sarum shot an arrow in the direction of where he wanted to build the cathedral. The legend then states that the arrow hit a deer and the deer died in New Sarum, i.e. Salisbury.
In 1220 work began on building Salisbury Cathedral. Around the same time, the city was laid out in a loose grid formation. The cathedral was built by both skilled and unskilled workers, including men, women and even children. 38 years later, in 1258, it was consecrated. The tower and spire were added later, and were completed by the early 14th century. At 123 metres (404 ft) tall, it is the tallest cathedral in the UK, although originally it was only the third tallest, behind Lincoln Cathedral and Old St Paul's Cathedral. In 1548 Lincoln Cathedral's central spire collapsed in a storm, and in 1561 the spire of Old St Paul's caught fire and crashed through the roof. Salisbury Cathedral also boasts the largest cloisters and largest cathedral close in the country.
Situated within Salisbury Cathedral is one of four original copies of Magna Carta. This was the document signed by King John in 1215, limiting the power of the monarchy. Three other copies were made - one of which is housed in Lincoln Castle, whilst the other two are at the British Library in London. Also within Salisbury Cathedral is a mechanical clock from 1386, said to be the oldest working clock in the world.
In 1227 a market charter was granted to Salisbury by Henry III. It became a prosperous city during the medieval era largely due to the wool trade. It has also been historically a popular stopping point for those visiting Stonehenge. This ancient monument is believed to date from 3000 to 2000 BC and is just nine miles away. One notable visitor was the diarist Samuel Pepys. According to his 17th century diary entries, he stayed at the George Inn (now Old George Mall, featured at the 23-minute mark), and complained about the 'exorbitant' bill.
In 1847 the railway arrived in Salisbury. The current station dates from 1859, and is situated on the West of England Main Line from Basingstoke to Exeter, and the Wessex Main Line from Southampton to Bristol.
Famous people from Salisbury include Anthony Daniels (i.e. C3PO), John Rhys-Davies and Joseph Fiennes.
