One day in Saintes and Rochefort - day trip from La Rochelle
On one of the days when we stayed in La Rochelle we decided to visit two nearby cities - Saintes and Rochefort. We only had one day for both cities and to do the justice to both of them you need to spend there much more time than that!
The cities are very different, but both are absolutely lovely and are definitely worth the visit!
Let's go!
And, as usual, quoting Wikipedia:
Saintes (French: [sɛ̃t]) is a commune and historic town in western France, in the Charente-Maritime department of which it is a sub-prefecture, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are called Saintaises and Saintais.[2] Saintes is the second-largest city in Charente-Maritime, with 26,470 inhabitants in 2008. The city's immediate surroundings form the second-most populous metropolitan area in the department, with 56,598 inhabitants. While a majority of the surrounding landscape consists of fertile, productive fields, a significant minority of the region remains forested, its natural state.
In Roman times, Saintes was known as Mediolanum Santonum. During much of its history, the name of the city was spelled Xaintes or Xainctes.
Primarily built on the left bank of the Charente River, Saintes became the first Roman capital of Aquitaine. Later it was designated as the capital of the province of Saintonge under the Ancien Régime. Following the French Revolution, it briefly became the prefecture of the department (then called Charente-Inférieure) during the territorial reorganization of 1790, until La Rochelle was designated and superseded it in 1810.[3] Although it only had the status of a subprefecture,[N 1] Saintes was allowed to remain the judicial center of the department. In the late 19th century, Saintes was chosen as the seat of the VIIIth arrondissement of the Chemins de Fer de l'État, railways, which enabled an era of economic and demographic growth.
Today, Saintes remains the economic heart of the center of the department, and it is an important transportation hub.[4] A few major industrial businesses operate (in electronics, rail repair, construction of hoists). The city's commerce and service sector is large, featuring the headquarters of Coop Atlantique, and administrative functions of state, courts, and legal services; banks, schools, and a hospital. Beyond this, property maintenance, retail, and tourism sectors provide large numbers of jobs.
Because of its noteworthy Gallo-Roman, medieval and classical heritage, Saintes is a tourist destination. It has been a member of the French Towns and Lands of Art and History since 1990.[5] It has several museums, a theater, cinemas, and organizes numerous festivals.[6] A European center of musical research and practice is in its Abbaye aux Dames.[7]
Rochefort (/ˈroʊʃfɔːrt/), also known as Rochefort-sur-Mer (French pronunciation: [ʁɔʃfɔʁ syʁ mɛʁ]), is a commune in southwestern France, a port on the Charente estuary. It is a sub-prefecture of the Charente-Maritime department. In December 1665, Rochefort was chosen by Jean-Baptiste Colbert as a place of refuge, defence and supply for the French Navy. The Arsenal de Rochefort served as a naval base and dockyard until it closed in 1926.
In September 1757, Rochefort was the target of an ambitious British raid during the Seven Years' War.
Another infrastructure of early Rochefort from 1766 was its bagne, a high-security penal colony involving hard labour. Bagnes were then common fixtures in military harbors and naval bases, such as Toulon or Brest, because they provided free labor. During the Jacobin period of the French Revolution (1790–95), over 800 Roman Catholic priests and other clergy who refused to take the anti-Papal oath of the Civil Constitution of the Clergy were put aboard a fleet of prison ships in Rochefort harbour, where most died due to inhumane conditions.
Off Rochefort, from the island of Île-d'Aix where he had spent several days hoping to flee to America, Napoleon Bonaparte surrendered to Captain F. L. Maitland aboard HMS Bellerophon, on 17 July 1815, ending the Hundred Days.
Rochefort is a notable example of 17th-century ville nouvelle or new town, which means its design and building resulted from a political decree. The reason for building Rochefort was to a large extent that royal power could hardly depend on rebellious Protestant La Rochelle, which Cardinal Richelieu had to besiege a few decades earlier. Well into the 20th century, Rochefort remained primarily a garrison town. The tourist industry, which had long existed due to the town's spa, gained emphasis in the 1990s.

24 Hours in Les Saintes
Guadeloupe is made of five different islands, with five distinct flavors. And you’re going to want to visit each of the islands, so budget your time wisely. Arguably the most scenic of them all is Les Saintes. Although you should try to stay longer, if you only have a day, here’s how you should spend your time.
1. Eat a Tourment d'Amour for Breakfast
Start off your day with a pastry called Tourment d'Amour. Translated to the “Agony of Love,” the traditional pastry is filled with coconut, banana or guava. According to local legend, the pastry got its name from the wives of sailors who baked these treats while anxiously awaiting their husbands’ return.
By the ferry docks, look for older women lugging around madras-lined baskets. These lifelong bakers sell packs of four pies for less than $3.
2. Hike to Fort Fort Napoleon
From the dock, take the steep, paved road to the top of Fort Napoleon, which should take you about an hour to complete. While Fort Napoleon was never in battle, it served as a jail and a detention center for political prisoners during WWII. Today, it’s a museum that’s dedicated to the natural environment of Les Saintes and the history of the fort.
3. Take a Selfie in Front of Les Saintes Bay
The reward for hiking to the top of Fort Napoleon is a stunning view of Les Saintes Bay. The harbor is designated by UNESCO as the third most beautiful bay in the world, but from way up here, her beauty is second to none.
4. Lunch at a Beachside Restaurant
If you’re not going to dine on the beach, then why did you come to Guadeloupe in the first place? On Les Saintes, you can take a dip in the ocean between courses. The food tastes better that way.
I dined at Ti Kaz La restaurant in Terre-de-Haut, which offers everything from locally-caught spiny lobster and beef carpaccio covered with parmesan shavings to mango soufflé.
5. Relax at Pain de Sucre
Laze the rest of the day away at Pain de Sucre beach. Named after Rio de Janeiro’s Sugarloaf Beach, this secluded cove is hidden away by vegetation and a favorite among locals. Bring your snorkel to get a better look at coral formations, butterflyfish, damselfish and Atlantic blue tang.
6. Overnight at LoBleu Hotel
The beachfront LoBleu Hotel offers 10 spacious rooms, some with views of the island of Cabrit. Overlooking the bay of Terre de Haut, the boutique property offers complementary breakfast in a picturesque setting. Expect to see fisherman hauling in their daily catches, colorful wooden boats and pelicans diving for food.

Places to see in ( Royan - France )
Royan is a seaside resort town on France’s Atlantic coast, at the mouth of the Gironde estuary. Its sandy beaches include the 2 km-long, south-facing La Grande Conche with its sheltered waters. The town also has belle epoque villas and modern, postwar architecture such as the concrete Notre-Dame de Royan church. The grand Cordouan Lighthouse stands on an islet in the estuary, accessible by ferry.
Located at the entrance to the Gironde estuary, the seaside resort of the Beauté coast became famous in the 19th century, when the fashion for sea bathing developed. Rebuilt after the bombardments of 1945, the town of Royan today offers many examples of modern architecture, including residential blocks and the Notre-Dame church. It is though still possible to admire charming villas of the Belle Époque period, especially in the prestigious district of Pontaillac. Beautiful fine sand beaches, among which the Grande Conche beach and the beautiful beach of Pontaillac, as well as the numerous activities on offer make Royan a renowned seaside resort.
Royan is a commune in the south-west of France , located in the department of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called Royannais and Royannaises. Main city of the Côte de Beauté with 18,393 inhabitants in 2015, in the heart of an urban area of 48,982 inhabitants in 2013, Royan is primarily one of the main seaside resorts on the French Atlantic coast, with five beaches sand, and also a marina that can accommodate more than 1,000 boats and an active fishing port. Economic center radiating on the south-west quarter of the department (tertiary activities : shopping centers, crafts, banks and mutual, educational institutions) the city also lives at the pace of the university pole of Carel, specialized in language teaching.
Located in the peninsula of Arvert, on the right bank of the mouth of the largest estuary in Europe, the Gironde, Royan has always been a coveted strategic site costing him several seats and destruction. After the Germanic invasions (Visigoths in particular), and some incursions Viking, Royan, then small fishing port, is the seat of several priories during the Middle Ages. Under English rule during the Hundred Years War, the city becomes during the Religious war a Protestant stronghold that will be besieged and destroyed by Louis XIII.
It was only during the Restoration that Royan developed thanks to its sea baths and acquired a great reputation in the middle of the 19th century, especially from the Second Empire. It hosts many artists during the Roaring Twenties.
Destroyed by allied bombing during the Liberation fighting (headquarters of Royan, September 12, 1944-15 April 1945), the martyred city is declared a Laboratory of research on urbanism and has since a representative architectural heritage of the 1950s (Modernist architecture), which earned him to be classified Ville d'Art et d'Histoire (Towns of Art and History) in 2010. Today, Royan affirms more than ever its seaside vocation. It is a tourist and cultural center welcoming annually 90,000 inhabitants each summer season.
