[ENG] Saint-Dié is located in the Vosges Mountains 80 km (50 mi) southeast of Nancy and 80 km (50 mi) southwest of Strasbourg. This route in the valley of the river Meurthe was always the more frequented, and first to get a rail line in 1864, so now it accommodates the primary road.
Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, principal town of an arrondissement of the same name, belongs to the Vosges département of France. This commune with a little town in her center, is approximately 50 km (31 mi) northeast of Épinal, and connected by two roads, south through the passes of Haut-Jacques and Bruyères or north by the pass of Haut-du-Bois and the ancient land of Rambervillers. By rail, Épinal is 61 km (38 mi) from Saint-Dié.
The river Meurthe flows in the Permian basin of Saint-Dié surrounded by wooded mountains Ormont, Kemberg and La Madeleine. The peaks of these mountains are 550 metres (1,800 feet) high, and are composed of Triassic formations, especially the so-called Vosges sandstone, a kind of red sandstone.

✨Paris Gardens: Place des Vosges✨ 🇫🇷
Solo Female Traveler: Place des Vosges - at last after reading about it in several books. Lovely, small, with fountains on all four corners and a statue of Henry IV’s son Louis XIII on horseback.
Place des Vosges is in the Marais and used to be called Place Royale. Commissioned by Henry IV (who didn’t live long enough to see its completion), Place des Vosges became the luxurious setting for weddings, tournaments, balls, duels and salons of the seventeenth century. The elegant houses surrounding the squares hosted gatherings of intellectuals of that time - Moliere, La Fontaine, Racine, Madam de Lafayette.
One of the more exciting residents on the periphery of Place des Vosges is Ninon de l’Enclos, who started out as a nun at a convent, but after year, did a complete 180 and instead became a famous courtesan. She entertained not only many lovers, but also hosted a legendary literary salon at the edge of Place de Vosges. She was briefly imprisoned for being an outspoken woman of independent means and loose morals to which she had to say: “Feminine virtue is nothing but a convenient masculine invention.”
When she died, she left a monetary bequest for Voltaire, yes that Voltaire, so that he could purchase books.
I am the Wandersome Woman. I invite you to join me in my every day life in Paris, where I explore the city’s hidden gems and cook culinary French classics the Keto way.

Place des Vosges, Paris Walking Tour. France [HD 4K 60fps]
Join us on our walk from rue Saint Antoine, as we pass through the Hôtel de Sully and explore the vaulted arcades around the Place des Vosges!
The Hôtel de Sully is a Louis XIII style hôtel particulier, or private mansion, located at 62 rue Saint-Antoine in the Marais, 4th arrondissement, Paris. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, it is nowadays the seat of the Centre des monuments nationaux, the French national organization responsible for national heritage sites. It has been listed since 1862 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
The Place des Vosges, originally Place Royale, is the oldest planned square of Paris. It is located in the Marais district, and it straddles the dividing-line between the 3rd and 4th arrondissements of Paris. It was a fashionable and expensive square to live in during the 17th and 18th centuries, and one of the main reasons for the reputation of Le Marais among the Parisian nobility.
The Place des Vosges was built by King Henri IV from 1605 to 1612. A true square (140 m × 140 m), it embodied one of the first European programs of royal city planning (The Plaza Mayor in Madrid -begun in 1590 - precedes it). It was built on the site of the Hôtel des Tournelles and its gardens: at a tournament at the Tournelles, a royal residence, Henri II was wounded and died. Catherine de' Medici had the Gothic complex demolished, and she moved to the Louvre Palace.
Cardinal Richelieu had an equestrian bronze of Louis XIII erected in the center (there were no garden plots until 1680). In the late 18th century, while most of the nobility moved to the Faubourg Saint-Germain district, the square managed to keep some of its aristocratic owners until the Revolution. It was renamed in 1799 when the département of the Vosges became the first to pay taxes supporting a campaign of the Revolutionary army. The Restoration returned the old royal name, but the short-lived Second Republic restored the revolutionary one in 1870.

Le Marais & Place des Vosges, Paris Walking Tour, France [HD 4K 60fps]
Join us as we walk through le Marais, starting at Place des Vosges. Long the aristocratic district of Paris, it hosts many outstanding buildings of historic and architectural importance. It spreads across parts of the 3rd and 4th arrondissements (on the Rive Droite, or Right Bank, of the Seine).
Long the hub for Paris’s LGBT community and a popular student area, these days the district also teems with well-heeled young professionals and discerning tourists who come in search of a dizzying array of upscale designer boutiques, vintage clothes stores, chic hotels, gourmet food shops, and some of the city’s best restaurants and hippest bars. With its numerous galleries and museums, including the newly reopened Musée Picasso, the Marais is also a huge draw for art-lovers. Its lovely public gardens and polished architecture – a mix of the medieval, elegant 18th century, Haussmannian grandeur, and a touch of cutting-edge modern – only add to its considerable charm.
In 1240, the Order of the Temple built its fortified church just outside the walls of Paris, in the northern part of the Marais. The Temple turned this district into an attractive area, which became known as the Temple Quarter, and many religious institutions were built nearby: the des Blancs-Manteaux, de Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie and des Carmes-Billettes convents, as well as the church of Sainte-Catherine-du-Val-des-Écoliers.
During the mid-13th century, Charles I of Anjou, King of Naples and Sicily, and brother of King Louis IX of France built his residence near the current n°7 rue de Sévigné. In 1361 King Charles V built a mansion known as the Hôtel Saint-Pol in which the Royal Court settled during his reign as well as his son's.
From that time to the 17th century and especially after the Royal Square (Place Royale, current place des Vosges) was designed under King Henri IV in 1605, the Marais was the French nobility's favorite place of residence. French nobles built their urban mansions there—hôtels particuliers, in French—such as the Hôtel de Sens, the Hôtel de Sully, the Hôtel de Beauvais, the Hôtel Carnavalet, the Hôtel de Guénégaud and the Hôtel de Soubise, as well as many other hôtels particuliers, found all over the district.
During the late 18th century, the district was no longer the most fashionable district for the nobility, yet it still kept its reputation of being an aristocratic area. By that time, only minor nobles and a few more powerful nobles, such as the Prince de Soubise, lived there. The Place des Vosges remained a place for nobles to meet. The district fell into despair after the French Revolution, and was therefore abandoned by the nobility completely, and would remain so until the present day. The district has now been rehabilitated and now sports trendy shopping and restaurants in streets such as Rue des Francs-Bourgeois and Rue des Rosiers.
The city’s most famous Jewish neighborhood is in the Marais and is known as the Pletzl – Yiddish for little Place. This 4th arrondissment district (Metro: St. Paul) has been home to Jews on and off since the thirteenth century. Today, though gentrification has made this one of the city’s most fashionable quarters, it is still heavily Jewish and has been for nearly one hundred years. Up and down rue des Rosiers between rue Malher and rue des Hospitalières-St.-Gervais, as well as on the streets off rue des Rosiers, you will find Jewish restaurants, bookshops, boulangeries and charcuteries along with synagogues and shtiebels (small prayer rooms – Oratoire in French).
