Designada por Palheiros de Mira, devido às construções de madeira utilizadas pelos pescadores, a Praia de Mira era na primeira parte do séc. XX uma aldeia piscatória, cujo quotidiano se poderá conhecer no Museu Etnográfico, a funcionar precisamente num palheiro restaurado.
Hoje em dia, é uma estância balnear concorrida, com areias brancas e finas rodeadas por dunas e banhadas pela ondulação forte do Oceano Atlântico, que atrai muitos surfistas. Para lá das dunas, a Mata Nacional, onde o aroma a pinheiro predomina, esconde a Lagoa da Barrinha, com águas serenas, excelentes para a vela, canoagem ou windsurf.

This was our whole day trip from Lisbon to Cabo da Roca which is the most westerly part of mainland Europe. We rented a car from Lisbon to enjoy this beautiful coastline of Portugal.
Estoril is a town in the Municipality of Cascais, Portugal, on the Portuguese Riviera. It is famed as a major international luxury tourist entertainment destination and is known for its luxury hotels, beaches, and the Casino Estoril.
The municipality is one of the wealthiest in both Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula. It has one of the most expensive real estate markets and one of the highest costs of living in the country and is consistently ranked highly for its quality of life.

Mientras recorremos la Sierra del Azor, al mismo tiempo que nos dejamos cautivar por el aspecto majestuoso y la pureza del paisaje, nos invaden la curiosidad y la impaciencia. Piódão se empeña en permanecer escondido para, inesperadamente, deslumbrar con su arquitectura, que tan bien refleja la capacidad que tenemos para adaptarnos de forma armoniosa a los lugares más inhóspitos y también más sublimes. Como si de un belén se tratara, las casas se distribuyen en torno a los bancales, marcadas por el azul y la pizarra, por entre sinuosas y estrechas callejuelas que en cada esquina esconden la historia del pueblo de Piódão.
Enquanto percorremos a Serra do Açor, ao mesmo tempo que nos deixamos encantar pelo aspeto majestoso e puro da paisagem, a curiosidade e a impaciência invadem-nos. Piódão teima em permanecer escondido para, inesperadamente, deslumbrar com a sua arquitetura, que tão bem exemplifica a capacidade que temos para de forma harmoniosa nos adaptarmos aos mais inóspitos e também mais sublimes locais. Como se de um presépio se tratasse, as casas distribuem-se em redor dos socalcos, nas quais pontuam o azul e o xisto, por entre sinuosas e estreitas ruelas, que em cada canto escondem a história da Aldeia Histórica de Piódão.

São Martinho is a civil parish in the municipality of Funchal, on the island of Madeira. The population in 2011 was 26,482, in an area of 7.95 km².
During the island's early settlement, the area that includes the present parish was part of the much large Sé, and later São Pedro, when it was finally deannexed in 1597. The lands immediately around the commercial centre of Funchal were quickly acquired and put into service for cultivation of subsistence crops. As with the other settlements in the Portuguese Empire, these settlements eventually formed from communities of living in the shadow of small chapels that dotted the landscape. The same was true for São Martinho: a small artesanal business and chapel constituted the first buildings in this region, owned by Afonso Anes, who was responsible for guiding the influencing development, becoming a parish on 3 March 1579. Much later a new church was a formal church constructed, by the 19th century.
The establishment of an Administrative Code in 1878, defined the creation of a level of government below the municipality, giving rise to the civil parish system that coincided with the older ecclesiastical parishes. On 23 June 1916, by decree law 621, the parish of São Martinho was created.
The parish covers the southwestern part of Funchal, located three to four kilometres west of Funchal and approximately three kilometres east of Câmara de Lobos. It consists of the localities Ajuda, Amparo, Areeiro, Casa Branca, Igreja, Lombada, Nazaré, Pico de São Martinho, Pico do Funcho, Pilar, Piornais, Poço Barral, Quebradas, Vargem, Virtudes and Vitória.
Madeira was elected World's Leading Island Destination in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 by the World Travel Awards.
In 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 won the Europe’s Leading Island Destination prize, having competed in this category alongside major tourist destinations such as the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Malta, Cyprus, among others.
The World Travel Awards, also known as the “Oscars of Tourism”, were created in 1993 and are held once a year. They aim to “recognise, reward and celebrate excellence in all sectors of the tourism industry” globally, as well as, to recognise this sector best practices.
In addition to electing the best European hotels, every year, the World Travel Awards (WTA) organisation also names the best hotels in each country, awarding Madeira hotels in a wide range of categories and thus recognising the quality of the hotel facilities and excellent service available in the region.
