Cape Verde’s climate is tropical, with a warm, dry summer. As a part of the greater Sahel region of Africa precipitation is meager and falls between the months of June to February, peaking in September.

Some islands see almost no rain, these are Sal, Boa Vista and Maio; these are arid. The islands with the most rain fall are Santiago, Fogo and Santo Antao, but are nonetheless semi-arid.

Cape Verde is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets. The main islands are (clockwise from northwest):
Santo Antão - Great hiking.
São Vicente - With the cultural capital of Mindelo.
Santa Luzia - Santa Luzia is uninhabited but can be visited as a day trip from São Vicente.
São Nicolau - Rural mountainous island based on agriculture. A quiet and relaxed get away.
Sal - Has great beaches, water sports and resorts aplenty.
Boa Vista - Even nicer beaches. Great scuba diving
Maio - Even more nice beaches.
Santiago Island - The first island settled in Cape Verde. It holds the current capital Praia, the original capital Cidade Velha, and the bulk of the nation's population.
Fogo - A spectacular volcano island which erupted as recently as November 2014.
Brava - A small island only accessible by boat and is a great place to get away from it all.

There are 24 cities in Cape Verde.
Praia – the capital, on Santiago Island
Mindelo – port city on São Vicente, probably the country's liveliest
Cidade Velha (Ribeira Grande) – A historic town on Santiago
Espargos is the capital of Sal where the airport is and Santa Maria is the main tourist area at the south of the island
Assomada is the seat of municipality of Santa Catarina on Santiago
Santa Maria - former administrative capital and the most populous city on Sal
Sao Filipe - historic town on Fogo

Brava, the smallest island, is a botanist's paradise, home to many unique flora that live in its misty forests
Pico de Fogo - an active volcano on Fogo that has created a unique landscape best explored on foot or horseback

Talk
The official language is Portuguese, used in all official publications and announcements as well as in business, media and schools, but the local language is Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu kabuverdianu), a Portuguese-based creole language with 95% of the words from Portuguese and the rest mainly from West African languages. It is divided into 9 dialects spoken on various parts of the country. Even though Kriolu is comprehensible to a skilled Portuguese-speaker, almost all people can also speak Portuguese as a second language. French is also known by many, and some people also speak English.

It is a good idea to know some Kriolu or at least Portuguese, since even though young urban people are often quite proficient in English, this does not apply to old and rural people, and even those who can speak English will highly appreciate any attempt you do to speak Kriolu or Portuguese.

Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure

Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure

Cape Verde is a country in West Africa. It comprises a group of islands of the Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. It is part of the region of Islands collectively known as Macaronesia. Cape Verde has won a positive reputation in promoting what is considered the most stable democracy in Africa, a standard of living higher than most African nations, and one of the most politically liberal nations on the continent, and in the world.

Jutting up from the Atlantic, some 500km west of Senegal, this stunning island chain has a captivating blend of mountains, beaches and peaceful seaside villages. On Santo Antão, craggy peaks hide piercing green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, ideal for epic hikes. São Vicente is home to the cultural capital of the islands, Mindelo, which throbs with bars and music clubs. On Sal and Maio, undulating windswept dunes merge with indigo-blue seas on unspoilt beaches of powdery white sand. Meanwhile, far-flung Fogo and Brava in the southwest offer their own enchantments, from surreal volcanic landscapes, to sparkling bays framed by towering peaks. Throw in the constant beat of music that Cabo Verde is famed for and the renowned morabeza (Creole for hospitality) of its people and you’ll see why many have come – and never left.

There are plenty of hotels and guest houses throughout the archipelago. Though the largest hotels are based on the islands of Sal (Riu Funana and Garopa hotels--1000 rooms combined), and Boa Vista (Riu Touareg--881 rooms). Cape Verde has fantastic fresh seafood. Tuna is common, as is Wahoo - a white fleshed fish with similar texture.

There are ferry services between the islands. Depending on the distance between the islands you are going from and to, flying can be significantly shorter but also significantly more expensive.

[4K] - DRONE over FOGO VOLCANO - FOGO Island - [CABO VERDE TRAVEL] 🇨🇻

A DRONE flight high over the caldera of FOGO ISLAND on scenically dramatic
FOGO Island, CAPE VERDE, showcasing the amazing volcanic landscape of this island.

Fogo is an island in the Sotavento group of Cape Verde. It reaches the highest altitude of all the islands in Cape Verde, rising to 2,829 metres (9,281 feet) above sea level at the summit of its active volcano, Pico do Fogo.

Fogo was discovered in 1460 by Genovese captain António de Noli on behalf of Henry the Navigator and the Portuguese Crown. It appeared in a 1598 map as I. de Fogo. Fogo was the second island of Cape Verde that was settled by the Portuguese, between 1470 and 1490, making São Filipe the second oldest town of Cape Verde after Cidade Velha.

The Fogo volcano erupted frequently, both from the summit and from flank fissures, notably in 1680, 1725, 1857, 1951, 1995, and 2014–15. The eruption of 1680 covered much of the island in ash, which forced many inhabitants to flee to the nearby island of Brava.

The Atlantic Crossing #3: Praia & Forte São Filipe in Cabo Verde

Crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a cruise ship from Recife in Brazil to Lisbon in Portugal. First time in Cabo Verde, Africa!

The Republic of Cape Verde is an island country, spanning an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean, 570 kilometres off the coast of Western Africa. The Cabo Verde islands, covering a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi), are of volcanic origin and while three of them (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) are fairly flat, sandy and dry, the remaining ones are generally rockier and have more vegetation. Because of the infrequent occurrence of rainfall in Cabo Verde the overall landscape is not particularly green, despite what the country's name suggests (verde is Portuguese for green).

The ship is the MV Bleu de France, owned by the Spanish company Pullmantur through its subsidiary Crossieres de France and in partnership with the Brazilian agency CVC. On this video, we pass by the city of Fortaleza.

The trip, also called the crossing, took 12 days. We departed from Recife, the main city in the Northeast coast of Brazil, with stops in Fortaleza (Brazil), Praia (Cabo Verde), Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Ilhas Canarias, Spain) and Funchal (Ilha Madeira, Portugal), arriving early morning in Lisbon.

This Part 1 video only shows the night departure from Recife and following videos will show all the stops we made. Watch many videos of the Bleu de France cruise ship on There is a video showing many areas inside the Bleu de France and others showing the beautiful places the ship has been during the last Brazilian summer season, like Recife, Fernando de Noronha, Natal, Fortaleza, Salvador and Maceio, before returning to Marseilles in France for the beginning of the European season. This is the last season for this ship as Bleu de France, as it was sold to the British company SAGA and soon will become Saga Sapphire.

Cidade Velha (formerly known named Ribeira Grande) is Cape Verde's first capital and the oldest permanent European settlement in the Tropics. Enjoy the footage of the fortress constructed by Portugal & Spain (during the Iberian Union, which lasted between 1580 and 1640) and its periphery.

Cape Verde or Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country in the central Atlantic Ocean. The ten volcanic islands in its archipelago have a combined land area of about 4,033 square kilometres (1,557 sq mi).

The islands lie about 600 kilometres (370 mi) to 850 kilometres (530 mi) of west of Cap-Vert which gave its name to the islands. On this cape - the westernmost point of continental Africa - lies Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Cape Verde forms part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Savage Isles.

The archipelago remained uninhabited until the 15th century, when Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the islands, establishing the first European settlement in the tropics. Ideally located for a role in the Atlantic slave-trade, the islands grew prosperous throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, attracting merchants, privateers, and pirates. The suppression of the Atlantic slave-trade in the 19th century led to economic decline and emigration. Cape Verde gradually recovered as an important commercial center and stopover for shipping routes. Incorporated as an overseas department of Portugal in 1951, the islands continued to campaign for independence, which they achieved in 1975.

Since the early 1990s Cape Verde has operated as a stable representative democracy, and remains one of the most developed and democratic countries in Africa. Lacking natural resources, its developing economy is mostly service-oriented, with a growing focus on tourism and foreign investment. Its population of around 550,000 (as of mid 2019) is mostly of mixed African and European heritage, and predominantly Roman Catholic, reflecting the legacy of Portuguese rule. A sizeable diaspora community exists across the world, considerably outnumbering inhabitants on the islands. Cape Verde is a member state of the African Union.

DRONE over FOGO Island - [CABO VERDE TRAVEL] 🇨🇻
