KARERA FALLS RUTANA PROVINCE BURUNDI | KARERA FALLS One of The Best Waterfall in Burundi | RUTANA
In this video we shall be taking you to East Africa to show you the 10 best places to visit in Burundi. Burundi is a landlocked country located in the Great Rift Valley where the African Great Lakes region and East Africa converge. Burundi may be one of the smallest countries in mainland Africa but it is packed with stunning natural locations which are worth every tourist’s time. The country is divided into 16 provinces which cover an area of just over 28,000km2 with so much cultural diversity than most countries in Africa including colonial influences from colonial settlers as well as the aboriginal cultures which are very fascinating.

If you are new here, welcome, be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you don’t miss any of our videos.
From flora to fauna, natural beaches and forest abundance, Burundi is made up of so many sites and water bodies which are every traveller’s dream. Besides the culture and ethnicity of Burundi that is always talked about, here are 10 best places to visit in Burundi.

1. Bujumbura
Starting off the list of 10 best places to visit in Burundi is one of its French- influenced cities, Bujumbura.Bujumbura is known for the history of French and Colonial settlements that this city holds. This city has a greater impact of the French culture and you are sure to find the best of French cuisines here. This relatively small city has not seen much development over the past decades mainly due to years of conflict in the region. The city, commonly known as Buji, has retained other characteristics from its period as a French colony such as excellent food, drink and nightlife. French cuisine can be found at various restaurants in the city, occupying a wide range of prices and quality. Sights in the city include the university which is the only one in Burundi and the Independence Monument which remembers hard times of occupation by French, Belgian and German rulers. The Living Museum is also located in Bujumbura and is arguably one of the best museums of its kind in Africa with both ancient and modern crafts in display.

2. Rusizi River National Park
When you want to see a mélange of big water mammals and a beautiful water body that serves as habitat for them, then, Rusizi River National Park is the place to stop by. Located just outside of Bujumbura is the fascinating Rusizi River National Park. Due to the periodic flooding that usually happen around the plains surrounding the river, hundreds of animals tend to flock to this area. Hippos are one of the tourist favourites in this area but there are several more species here to keep you entertained including colourful birds. With the clear skies here, the parkis a true bird-watchers paradise with migratory birds frequenting the parking including rare and beautiful species from both Asia and Europe such as sand pipers and plovers.

3. Ruvubu National Park
If you will love to visit a park in Ruvubu, why not visit the biggest there is to offer. The Ruvubu National Park with an area of over 500km2 is therefore not only the best fit for its size but also because of the rare and special species of plants and animals found here. The park, which was founded in 1980, is home to some of the most majestic and impressive wildlife in the country including beasts such as hippos, buffalo, tigers, elephants and crocodiles. That’s not all, the park is also known for its variety of rare plants and flowers as well as the birdlife that migrates to the region throughout the year. Preservation of the park is one of the country’s top concerns, so much so that humans have been evacuated from the area.

Burundi | Exploring Agasumo ka mwaro - who do you think is rich?

I had never stopped to ask myself the question who do I think is rich, but whilst exploring Agasumo ka mwaro, Ferdinand whom I just met a few minutes before we began the walk to the waterfall mentioned the believed me to be rich because I was travelling and visiting the waterfall.

The waterfall in itself is 42 Km from Gitega so its prefect for a day trip. As usual a used a combination of public transport to get there. Bodas and a shared commuter vehicle. There is a visitor's center/shop and picnic area which you access the Waterfall from , we came in from the pine forest route just next to the major road in the town. From what I understand the place does have some cultural significance. To get this information it would probably be best to go with a guide. There is a sign post but I believe everything was written in French.

So back to the question who do you think is rich? I would really love to read your answers so add them to the comment session.

Video from

Road to Rutana (chopped off version)

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman decided not to go with Seth and Brice on their motorcycle trip from Bujumbura, Burundi to Rutana, Burundi. A voyage boasting some 240 kilometers round trip. Seth and Brice weren't insulted, they were too busy drooling over their brand new yamaha 125 shiny red steeds. They also realized that very few people are willing to brave the wild roads of war torn Burundi, so they decided to take with them, a rag tag group of development workers who where loitering in the region.
This is a brief synopsis of their journey to the majestic and mysterious province of Rutana, filled with Burundians and stuff...

A beautiful video by Seth, to which I contributed, not only as a fellow driver but also as a film butcher since I had to savagely chop off bits of his movie to make it fit under the 10 minutes limit imposed by Youtube... I hope that we'll be able to upload a better version soon, in the meantime you'll just have to forgive me Seth.
