US 80 - Claiborne to Ruston, Louisiana

US 80 is parallel to the newer I-20, which has supplanted it as a long-distance route, for the entirety of its length in Louisiana.

The highway crosses the state line from Texas into Caddo Parish as a two-lane road and crosses over to the south of I-20 without connecting with the freeway. It passes through the town of Greenwood where it meets US 79 coming north from Texas, and these two routes run concurrently eastward from there to Minden. US 79/US 80 crosses over I-20 again, this time at an interchange, and enters the city of Shreveport as Greenwood Road. The highway passes over I-220 without an interchange and continues east to an intersection with Jefferson Paige Road where it expands to four undivided lanes and enters the main part of the urbanized area. US 171 ends at US 79/US 80 at the intersection with Hearne Avenue. At this intersection, the road narrows to two through lanes. US 80 intersects I-20 again just east of here. At Mansfield Road, the highway name changes to Texas Avenue and angles northeast through an industrial area. The road skirts the I-20/I-49 interchange and expands to four lanes for its final approach to downtown. At the west edge of downtown, eastbound jogs one block east on Crockett Street and two blocks north on Common Street north to Texas Street; westbound jogs one block south from Texas Street down Common to Texas Avenue. US 79/US 80 passes through downtown Shreveport on Texas Street before crossing the Red River on the 1930s vintage Long–Allen Bridge and entering Bossier City and Bossier Parish.

Through Bossier Parish, US 79/US 80 comprises a major urban and suburban arterial (East Texas Street) carrying a minimum of four lanes. In the eastern reaches of the parish, and continuing into Webster Parish, it is a divided highway. The road intersects the east end of I-220 at an interchange. US 79/US 80 stays to the north of I-20, except for a stretch east of Haughton where it strays to the south for a period, skirting the north edge of the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant. At Dixie Inn, the highway intersects US 371. In Minden, US 79 separates from US 80 and continues its northeasterly trajectory toward Arkansas.

East of Minden, US 80 crosses to the south of I-20 and serves the Bienville Parish towns of Gibsland and Arcadia. Entering Lincoln Parish, the highway serves Simsboro and Grambling before entering Ruston (via West California Avenue) and overlapping US 167 on a north–south couplet of streets (Vienna Street/Trenton Street) through the business district. US 80 resumes its eastward path on the north side of Ruston and exits the city on East Georgia Avenue.

Between Ruston and Monroe the highway serves the small communities of Choudrant and Calhoun. Now on the north side of the interstate, it enters Ouachita Parish and approaches the Monroe area as a two-lane road. US 80 crosses Louisiana Highway 143 (LA 143) and enters West Monroe on Cypress Street, where it continues south into the business district and widens to a four-lane urban arterial. At junction LA 34 (Bridge Street), US 80 makes a left turn, angling northeast, and crosses the Ouachita River, entering the city of Monroe. As Louisville Avenue it passes north of downtown, but the downtown area can be accessed via Business US 165 which intersects US 80 at North 5th/North 6th Street and becomes concurrent from there to the east. Louisville Avenue rapidly becomes a heavily commercialized urban arterial and remains so as it passes through the city, eventually curving southwestward and meeting the intersection with Desiard Street.

As Desiard St, US 80 immediately meets mainline US 165, on its expressway bypass alignment, at a diamond interchange. Eastward from there, US 80 passes through suburban areas until it meets LA 139, where it is forced to turn off its four-lane alignment at an intersection which favors LA 139 traffic. Now a two-lane road, US 80 continues east through northeast Louisiana, passing through Richland and Madison parishes and serving the communities and towns of Start, Rayville (intersection with US 425), Delhi , Tallulah (intersection with U.S. Route 65), Mound, and Delta.

Just west of Delta, US 80 turns off its original route and runs a short distance south to an interchange with I-20. The original alignment of US 80 into Delta is now designated as LA 3218. The original US 80 Mississippi River Bridge remains active as a rail bridge but the roadway portion is closed to traffic. Today, US 80 runs concurrent with the interstate around Delta to the state line, bypassing the town and crossing the Mississippi River bridge into Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Road Trip #160 - US-80 W - Claiborne to Ruston, Louisiana

We continue west on US Highway 80, beginning at the western border of the community of Claiborne. US-80 crosses to the south side of I-20, and passes through the census designated place of Calhoun. Then, we cross into Lincoln Parish at the Louisiana meridian, and pass through the village of Choudrant, home of the annual Outhouse Grand Nationals outhouse races. We conclude as we enter the city of Ruston, Louisiana.

00:00- INTRO* Today let’s walk through some of the hidden gems of Point Ruston. And if you haven’t already, make sure to watch the 1st part before watching this. Join me only on the Epic Travel Adventures.

00:44 – Past the playground & down the boardwalk, you will see this bell looking sculpture. Actually, this is not a bell. This is a replica Slag Pot or a Slag Ladle. Weighing 35-tons, these pots were used to hold high temperature slags in metal smelting operations. This one marks the beginning of the Dune Peninsula.

01:36 – Although its own city that is located about 10 minutes North of Tacoma, many consider Ruston an extension of Tacoma. The whole area is just over a quarter of a square mile with just under a thousand people living here.

02:13 – The Dune Peninsula which is located next to the Tacoma Yacht Club is an 11-acre spacious park. The pyramid like structures are the Sail Mounds built from the interlocking quarry rock brought all the way from Orting, Washington located about an hour South. Sail Mounds because the mounds are triangular with curved edges resembling sails of sailboats.

03:34 – Next to the Sail Mounds is a huge park where people relax and enjoy the ambient atmosphere. Did you know that there is a total of 3 Sail Mounds in the area which you can climb? It took over 50,000 tons of rock weighing approximately 200 million lbs. to complete this project.

05:10 – Little Makers sculptures were put in place in 2019 on top of the Sail Mounds.

05:55 – The view from here is amazing as that you can see the Dash Point and the Vashon Island across the water. On a clear day, you will also see Mt. Rainier to the east.

06:30 – This steel art work is the Alluvion put into place in 2017. Notice several vertical pipes representing smokestacks that used to be in the area. This whole area used to be occupied by the ore-processing plant in the 1890 operated by American Smelting & Refining Company or ASARCO. In the 1940s, ASARCO dumped lots of molten slag which was a lava-like material into the Commencement Bay. This material created a 23-acre peninsula which today is a part of the Dune Peninsula which was built of slag, ASARCO’s copper smelter & waste. Because of all of this and other contributors, Tacoma was considered to be one of the most polluted cities in the US in 1950s. In 1985, ASARCO was shut down and this is what is left over today. Today the area is blooming with life, new housing developments, restaurants, and shops.

08:22 – PREVIEW* Next, let’s head to the incredible Dungeness Spit. This beautiful and scenic location is a must see! So don’t miss it ONLY on the Epic Travel Adventures.

Discovering The Mysterious City of Ruston, Louisiana

Home of Louisiana Tech University, the small city of Ruston (population 22,000) can be considered a college town. There’s a lot more to it, though. The 260-acre Lincoln Parish Park is one of the premiere mountain biking destinations in the region, with around 11 miles of single-track riding geared to all levels. There are also lots of opportunities for walking, camping, and fishing in the park.

The small business scene in Ruston’s historic downtown area is booming, and is the perfect location to let loose and fuel up after a hard day on the trails. If you’re around in June, you’ll want to check out the annual Peach Festival, now in its 67th year. It’s chock full of events like a parade, antique car show, rodeo, and a peach cobbler eating contest.

00:00 – INTRO* Today we made it to Ruston! Let’s explore this beautiful location in the state of Washington. So join me only on the Epic Travel Adventures.

00:34 – These are the dancing rabbits joyfully hopping here on the Grand Plaza. The bronze sculpture was created by Georgia Gerber in 2007, enlarged to a human scale in 2011 and placed on the plaza in 2013.

01:17 – Positioned right in front of the crepe place the Jewel Box Café, this unique sculpture is the Olé created by Casey & Schuller and placed in the area in 2018. The sculpture is about 8 feet high and if you notice, it’s made from metal & glass. Olé is a dancer filled with joy.

01:37 – Next we see this Unification piece by Korolak representing two connected animalistic beings.

01:49 – Next to the Spray Park on the left, we overlook the Promenade Ruston ferry-themed playground on the right. Here you can rent bicycles and quad cycles. Standing from this platform, on a clear day you will see a beautiful Mt. Rainier in the distance.

02:22 – Every winter by the fountains, you can ski on the ice rink.

03:21 – Ruston, although nearly indistinguishable from Tacoma, is a small city located about 10 minutes just North of Tacoma. Many consider Ruston to be an extension of Tacoma. The population of Ruston is just under one thousand people and the actual city area is just over a quarter of a square mile. Nearby you will find Point Defiance Park as well as Pt. Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

05:19 – Located about 5 miles from Tacoma & built on Tacoma’s Puget Sound shoreline, Ruston is definitely one of my favorite areas to visit. The area is booming with hotels, apartments, restaurants and breweries as well as many retail shops that are popping up in the area. It is a beautiful and cozy atmosphere where you can enjoy delicious meals with breathtaking views. With by far lower crime than the US average, the area is also family friendly.

06:28 – You will see these 2012 bench castings designed by Robert Gilbert.

07:28 – This steel Pterodactyl designed by Mike Workman in 2017 is known as Sugar. It has an 11-foot wingspan and weighs 200 lbs. It is located by the Point Ruston Historic Ferry at the end of the Waterwalk.

07:45 – The Historic Ferry built in 1936 by Bath Iron Works used to be a Naval vessel carrying material and later became a civilian ferry. The boat was acquired by the city in 2007.

08:31 – Next we come up to the Hops Arbor Trellis put in place in 2013. It was also developed by Robert Gilbert who designed the bench castings I mentioned earlier. Here you can relax on one of the benches gazing at natural beauty of Ruston’s waterfront. On a clear day you will see the beautiful Mt. Rainier.

11:01 – PREVIEW* Next, let’s walk around the hidden gems of Point Ruston. I will show you newly built parks and arts as we further explore this city. So join me, ONLY on the Epic Travel Adventures.
