Top places in Slovakia Likava Castle ruins drone
Likavský hrad is situated in the north-western part of Liptov. The Castle was referred to for the first time in 1315. Its construction started with the intention to have a guarding point over the passage across the river Váh and the trade route from the Váh Basin to Orava and further to Poland.
The Castle owners, the noble family of Hunyady, gradually reconstructed and widened the core of the Castle and built the part called the lower Castle in the second half of the 15th century. In the second half of the 17th century, the Thökölys' eventually finished the entire fortification system though it was of no use as it did not prevent the disaster at the beginning of the 18th century when the retreating troops of František Rákoczi completely pulled down the Castle in 1707.
The Castle gradually decayed in ruins. After a thorough reconstruction in recent year the tower Hunyadyho veža was opened to public. It contains the exhibition of the Castle history.
Access: driving to the village Likavka, then on foot from the bus stop Likavka-hrad following the red hiking mark (it takes about 30 min).

(magyar felirat)
A Liptó (Liptov) észak-nyugati csücskében álló Likava várát (Likavský hrad) 1315-ben említik először.
Megközelítés: gépkocsival Likavka községből, Likaváról (autóbusz-megálló) gyalog a piros jelzést követve kb. 30 perc, Rózsahegyről (Ružomberok) (vasútállomás) gyalogosan a piros jelzés mentén kb. 1 óra.

Vlkolínec, Slovakia, is a picturesque village under the administration of the town of Ružomberok. Historically, however, it was a separate village. The first written mention of the village came from 1376 and after 1882 it became part of Ružomberok. Its name is probably derived from the Slovak word vlk, i. e. wolf.
Vlkolínec has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, and is one of ten Slovak villages that have been given the status of a folk architecture reservations. This status was granted because the village is an untouched and complex example of folk countryside architecture of the region of the Northern Carpathians.( )

EXCLUSIVE Traditional Slovak Food In UNESCO Village
Dining at restaurant in the Ružomberok region in Slovakia a place called Vlkolínec which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with folk architecture dating from the 14th century. Vlkolínec situated in the centre of Slovakia, is a remarkably intact settlement with the traditional features of a Central European village. It is the region’s most complete group of these kinds of traditional log houses, often found in mountainous areas. This place reminds me of Čičmany in regards of it being a place of history and well preserved folk wood architecture. It is a remarkably well preserved rural medieval settlement featuring wooden architecture typical of hillside and mountain areas. Its layout, defined in part by the hilly terrain of the mountains of Veľká Fatra, features log houses situated on narrow lots with stables, barns and smaller outbuildings in the rear. A canalized stream flows through the centre of the village. Although the settlement has roots in the 10th century, its first records date to the late 14th century. The urban layout can be traced to this era as records indicate five streets in place by 1469. Most of the surviving buildings, however, date from the 19th century. These include 43 nearly intact homesteads that retain a multitude of archaic building elements, the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary built in 1875, a bell tower built in 1770, and a school. Vlkolínec represents the region’s best preserved and most complex urban unit of original folk architecture consisting of wooden houses and outbuildings, the wooden bell tower and mural buildings of the church and school.
In this episode we make our way straight to the local restaurant to try then food and then we shall tour the village, interact with the locals and find out more about this history here.
