Places to see in ( Royston - UK )

Royston is a town and civil parish in the District of North Hertfordshire and county of Hertfordshire in England. Royston is situated on the Greenwich Meridian, which brushes the town's eastern boundary, and at the northernmost apex of the county on the same latitude as towns such as Milton Keynes and Ipswich. It is about 43 miles (69 km) north of central London in a rural area. Before the boundary changes of the 1890s, the boundary between Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire ran east–west through the centre of town along the middle of Melbourn Street.

Until 1540 Royston was divided between five parishes: Barkway, Reed and Therfield in Hertfordshire and Melbourn and Kneesworth in Cambridgeshire. In that year it became a separate ecclesiastical parish, partly in each county. Ralph de Rochester founded the Augustinian priory which originated as a chapel for three canons and was later expanded to seven or more regular canons. Royston had two hospitals or free chapels, as well as the monastery.

Royston Town Council was formed in 1974 as the successor to Royston Urban District Council. The council consists of fifteen councillors headed by a town mayor (currently Mayor lucille shears) The councillors are elected for three wards named Heath, Meridian and Palace. Among the town council's responsibilities are allotments, Royston Cave, Royston Museum, local festivals, public halls and the town's war memorial. In December 2007 Royston Town Council was awarded the nationally recognised status of Quality Town Council. This Award confirms that Royston Town Council is run in accordance with the high standards required by the National Association of Local Councils and other government bodies.

Royston sits at the junction of the A10 and A505 roads, both of which are important road links through Hertfordshire and beyond. The town is also convenient for fast links to London and the north, as it is only a short distance from both the A1(M) and M11 motorways. Nearby air transport links include London Luton and London Stansted airports, both of which are major air hubs in the south of England. Royston railway station provides direct commuter links to both London and Cambridge. It is on the Cambridge Line and is a stopping point for regular services operated by Great Northern Route.

The public open space and nature reserve of Therfield Heath (also known as Royston Heath) overlooks the town from a hill to the south-west. The Icknield Way Path passes through the village on its 110-mile journey from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire to Knettishall Heath in Suffolk. In 1742 a strange cave carved out of the chalk was discovered in the centre of Royston. Royston Cave is located underneath the central crossroads of the town. The carvings in the cave have led to much speculation about the origin and function of the cave.

Top 10 PRETTIEST Towns in HERTFORDSHIRE

What are the 10 prettiest towns in the county of Hertfordshire? To determine this, I visited them all. Here's what I found out.

As a disclaimer, this list is neither a social commentary, nor a guide on which are the nicest towns to live, but purely a judgement on the aesthetics of each respective town centre.

All footage is my own, and originates from my flagship channel, 4K Explorer, which you can check out here: --

10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Places to see in ( Hertford - UK )

Places to see in ( hertford - UK )

Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, England, and is also a civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district of the county. Forming a civil parish, Since 1974, Hertford has been within the East Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire. The headquarters of Hertfordshire County Council is at County Hall in Hertford. East Herts District Council's offices almost adjoin County Hall, and there is also a Hertford Town Council based at Hertford Castle.

Hertford is at the confluence of four river valleys: the Rib, Beane and Mimram join the River Lea at Hertford to flow south toward the Thames as the Lee Navigation, after Hertford Castle Weir. The shared valley of the Lea and the Beane is called Hartham Common and this provides a large park to one side of the town centre running towards Ware and lying below the ridge upon which Bengeo is situated.

The town centre still has its medieval layout with many timber-framed buildings hidden under later frontages, particularly in St Andrew Street. Hertford suffers from traffic problems despite the existence of the 1960s A414 bypass called Gascoyne Way which passes close to the town centre. Plans have long existed to connect the A10 with the A414, by-passing the town completely. Nevertheless, the town retains very much a country-town feel, despite lying only 19.2 miles (30.9 km) north of Central London. This is aided by its proximity to larger towns such as Harlow, Bishop's Stortford and Stevenage where modern development has been focused.

Suburbs and estates :

Bengeo
Foxholes Estate
Horns Mill
Pinehurst, Hertford
Rush Green
Sele Farm

In the town are the remains of the original Hertford Castle, principally a motte. The castle's gatehouse, the central part of which dates to a rebuild by Edward IV in 1463, is the home to Hertford Town Council. The Motte, from the original Motte and Bailey castle in Hertford, can be found just behind Castle Hall, a short distance from the modern castle.

In Railway Street can be found the oldest purpose-built Quaker Meeting House in the world, in use since 1670. The Hertford Corn Exchange was built on the site of a former gaol. Hertford Museum is housed in a 17th-century historic town house, with a Jacobean-style knot garden. A stained-glass window in St Andrew's Church is part of a fringe theory that links Hertford to the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail.

Hertford serves as a commuter town for London, and has two stations. Hertford East (on the Hertford East Branch Line). Hertford North (on the Hertford Loop Line) . Hertford also lies just west of the A10 and the Kingsmead Viaduct which links it south to London and the M25 and north to Royston and Cambridge.

Romsey Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hampshire, and around seven miles northwest of Southampton, is the town of Romsey.

In 907 AD a Benedictine abbey was founded in Romsey by Edward the Elder for his daughter, Princess Aelflaed, a nun at Wilton who became the first Abbess of Romsey. The abbey was destroyed by Vikings around the year 993, but was later rebuilt. In 1539 it was disestablished during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. The abbey buildings were purchased by the town in 1544 and to this day it serves as a parish church.

During the early 12th century, Romsey was granted its first market charter by Henry I. Early industries included wool and leather - much of which was transported to the neighbouring town of Southampton (city status didn't come until 1964).

From 1832 to 1835, Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, or commonly referred to as Lord Palmerston, became Member of Parliament for Hampshire South, within which Romsey is based. In 1859 he became the first prime minister from the Liberal Party, which formed that same year. He served in this role until his death in 1865. A statue of Palmerston features in the centre of the town.

In 1847 the railway arrived in Romsey courtesy of the London and South Western Railway. Today it serves as a junction station, situated on the Wessex Main Line which runs between Southampton and Bristol, and the Eastleigh to Romsey Line.

In 1858 Thomas Strong purchased a brewery in Romsey and named it Strongs. Brewing became a major employer in the town up until the late 20th century. In 1969 Strongs were purchased by Whitbread & Co. Ltd, and brewing ceased in Romsey in 1981.

Baldock Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 35 miles north of central London, is the town of Baldock.

The origins of Baldock as the settlement we know today go back to the 12th century. Sometime between 1138 and 1148 the Knights Templar founded a Medieval new town here. The name itself is believed to derive from 'Baghdad', possibly in an attempt to draw comparisons with the Middle Eastern city, which at the time was home to what was widely regarded as the most prosperous market in the world.

During the 13th century, St Mary the Virgin Church was built, replacing an older edifice from circa 1150 which had been built by the Templars. Another key historical building in the town is Wynne's Almshouses. Seen at the 2-and-a-half minute mark, this was built in 1621 with funds left by London merchant John Wynne to house the town's poor residents.

Due to its location at the crossing of two historic roads, namely the Great North Road and Icknield Way, Baldock was a key staging post during the stagecoach era of the 17th to 19th century. Consequently, several coaching inns were built, providing rest for travellers whilst their horses were changed. Additionally, Baldock was a centre for brewing and malting from around the 16th century.

In 1850 the railway arrived in Baldock, courtesy of the Royston and Hitchin Railway. Today this is situated on the Cambridge Line which links up to the East Coast Main Line via Hitchin. Trains to London take around 40 to 60 minutes, depending on stops, while trains to Cambridge take around 25 to 30 minutes.

Royston Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 12 miles southwest of Cambridge, is the town of Royston.

The origins of Royston as a settlement go back to the 12th century when a lady named Roisia is said to have laid a cross at the intersection of two ancient trackways, namely Ermine Street, the Roman road linking London to York, and the Icknield Way linking East Anglia to Wiltshire. According to folklore, the base of the cross was the Royse Stone - a glacial pebble from the Pennines. The town is named after Lady Roisia, and the stone stands at its centre to this day.

In the late 12th century an Augustinian Priory was founded near the intersection of the two ancient roads. Richard I established a new town around it, and granted it a market charter in 1189. Before long, it became a great confluence of people and trade. The town's long parallel streets are a throwback to the medieval era when market stalls placed down the centre of wide streets gradually became permanent structures. The Priory would later become St John the Baptist Church following Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, King James VI of Scotland stopped for the night in Royston on his journey south to London, at which point he became James VI and I (of Scotland and England/Ireland respectively). He is said to have been so taken with the excellent hunting in the area, that he returned to Royston. Here, he purchased multiple properties to house himself and his Court which he used as a base for hunting trips. Additionally, it was here in 1618 that he signed the death warrant of Sir Walter Raleigh.

In 1850 the railway arrived in Royston courtesy of the Royston and Hitchin Railway. Today it is situated on the Cambridge line, providing access to London Kings Cross in just under an hour (or in some cases just over, depending on stops), and to Cambridge in around 15 to 20 minutes.

Hotel Review: The Old Bull Inn, Royston, Hertfordshire, England - January 2022

Hotel Review: The Old Bull Inn, Royston, Hertfordshire, England - January 2022 -

The Old Bull Inn is located centrally in the town of Royston, Hertfordshire, around a 10 minute walk from the town's railway station and very close to the town's shops, pubs, restaurants and market place.

The hotel is within a Greene King pub called The Old Bull Inn. The bar and restaurant of the pub are downstairs and the guest rooms are upstairs.

We stayed upstairs in a twin room on a bed and breakfast basis for three nights, which cost £315.

The room was warm and very comfortable, the beds were incredibly soft and we slept very well in them. The bathroom was small but perfectly functional, apart from the shower, which could do with being updated.

The breakfast was excellent and served at the table in the restaurant downstairs, alongside a small cereal buffet.

All of the staff at the hotel were great, really friendly and their customer service was second to none. I don't mention this in the film, but we had to cancel and move our booking twice and the staff facilitated this without a problem.

I would recommend this hotel if you want to stay in Royston and will stop here again in future.

The Greenwich Meridian Trail: Hare Street to Royston 10 October 2017

A 10.75 mile stretch of the Greenwich Meridian Trail long distance footpath between Hare Street and Royston in Hertfordshire, via the villages of Wyddial, Buckland and Reed. Some marvellous vistas on the walk, but it was very windy so I need to apologise for the wind noise in the video. The weather was mostly cloudy, but dry. The walk took place on Tuesday 10 October 2017.
