What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Rothwell, Northamptonshire Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Northamptonshire, and around five miles northwest of Kettering, is the town of Rothwell (not to be confused with the town of Rothwell in West Yorkshire).
The town's name is believed to mean 'place of the red well', in reference to the ironstone colouring the freshwater springs here, although it is disputed as to whether it derives from Old English or Old Norse, as the Danish Vikings once occupied the area.
At the heart of the town is the Church of Holy Trinity. This dates back to the 12th century, with additions up to the 16th century. It once featured a spire up until 1660 when it collapsed. Beneath the church is one of just two ossuaries, or bone crypts, in England (the other being in Hythe in Kent). For a small fee, you can see the skeletal remains of around 2,500 individuals. Another architectural highlight is Rothwell Market House, dating from 1578. This features from around the eight-and-a-half minute mark. Both the church and Market House are Grade I listed.
While there is no railway station in Rothwell, there was once a station in the neighbouring town of Desborough, around two miles to the north. This opened in 1857 and closed in 1968. Today, public transport to Rothwell consists of direct buses from Kettering, Corby, Market Harborough and various other nearby locations.

The beautiful Shell Beach in the north of the Channel Island of Herm.
Most visitors will agree that Herm Island is a magical place. Every inch of the island is steeped in history and mystery. The north end of the island is made up of beautiful beaches and the vast grassy common, where woolly mammoth roamed millions of years ago, Neolithic settlements have been found, and where recent digs uncovered evidence of a prehistoric beach. This is where smugglers landed with their wares hundreds of years ago, where pirates hung as a warning to others, and where Prussian princesses walked in regal beauty. The east coast beaches, Shell and Belvoir, are where childhood memories are made. The soft white sand and clean blue water are perfect for play and swimming. The beach cafés are open in the summer months for snacks and sandwiches, and the famous Herm Ice Cream.
The south coast is home to high cliffs, winding flower-lined paths and white foam waves. Climb the hill to the Manor Village and you will find holiday cottages and log cabins to suit every size of family. This is where you can make a home from home, enjoy barbecues in the courtyard, and truly feel part of the island community.
A few minutes down the path leads to the Seagull campsite, a lovely, relaxing place to set up for a week or two, with beautiful scenic views over the water to Sark. On the other side of the island is the harbour village, the hub of island life. Here you can enjoy delicious food and Herm’s very own golden ale at The Mermaid Tavern and courtyard, or stock up on little treasures and souvenirs at the Herm Shop. The White House Hotel has been established on the island for many decades. Famously there are no TVs or telephones in the rooms, and the whole ambience is geared toward a peaceful, stress-free holiday. It’s two restaurants are a lovely place to sit and relax, with The Conservatory offering stunning views of the sea and sunsets.
Herm Island has been home to monks, Nazi soldiers, and even a famous writer. It’s beauty and charm have attracted many interesting characters over the years. A lot of our ways and traditions have been in place for several generations, having been established by the Wood family who ran the Island from 1949, followed by the Starboard Settlement, which took over their guardianship from 2008.
Whether you are new to Herm Island or have been coming here for many years, there are some things which will never change: the gentle lapping of the waves against the harbour rocks, the breath-taking views that make you stop and take it all in, and the feeling of well-being and peace you have when you step off the island onto the boat back to Guernsey.

8. Swindon
We want to begin with Swindon. This is a large town in Wiltshire in South West England. Swindon lies between Bristol and Reading, 56 kilometers to the west and the same distance to the east. However, Swindon is 114 kilometers to the west of London. As of 2011, Swindon’s built-up area has a population of 185,600. This is one of the 8 greenest towns in England.
Swindon has a lot of green spaces, charming and beautiful enough to stand among the greenest towns in the UK. The Lydiard Country Park is a charming historic estate on the western edge of the town set in 260 acres of parkland around a wonderful lake. The town also has Stanton Country Park, a hidden gem and holder of a Green Flag award on 36 hectares of parkland housing the lake, woodland, and grassland and home to a surprising array of flora and fauna. We would also love to mention Queen's Park which is close to the center of Swindon. It has a large lake of around 2 acres. Coate Water Country Park is another beautiful country park in the town. This fantastic community resource provides a perfect setting including a children’s playground and summer splash pool in addition to an all-year café.
7. Barnsley
The next among the greenest towns in England is Barnsley, a large market town and the fourth-largest settlement in South Yorkshire. The 2011 population of the town within a green belt was 91,297. This town restricts inappropriate development within its designated areas and imposes stricter conditions on permitted buildings. By doing this, it has been able to preserve its green space.
Its belt which was first defined in 1979 has reached 23,050 hectares by 2017. It has rural landscape features with the goal of encouraging recreation and leisure interests. The River Dearne Valley and Worsbrough Mill Park and reservoir are just two examples of efforts ranking Barnsley as one of the greenest towns in England.
6. Stafford
Stafford is another market town on our list. This county town of Staffordshire in the West Midlands lies about 24 kilometers north of Wolverhampton, 24 kilometers south of Stoke-on-Trent, and 39 kilometers north-west of Birmingham.
The nature reserves in Stafford include Astonfields Balancing Lakes, a local nature reserve of two lakes constructed for flood protection. There is also Doxey Marshes, a wet grassland habitat about three kilometers northwest of the town center and is managed by the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. It is about 150 hectares of nature reserve and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It’s home to wading birds and wildfowl. Kingsmead Marsh and Radford Meadows are also green spaces in this town.

Every now and then we organise walks that include something a little bit different. Today's 8 mile walk included a Bone Crypt where 2500 skulls were found beneath a church by accident. Yep, a poor gravedigger accidentally fell through a window and discovered them!

What to do? Wollaton Hall and Deer Park
Wollaton Hall and Deer park is definitely a must-see when you're around the area! This 500-acre park houses 2 herds of deer that roam freely around the park. Wollaton Hall itself was featured in the Dark Knight Trilogy as 'Wayne Manor'.
I hope this video gives justice to how big this park is. If you're planning to visit, definitely bring drinks and snacks with you as you can easily spend a couple of hours walking around the area. (Don't forget to take your rubbish with you when you leave!)

Market Harborough is a market town within the Harborough district of Leicestershire, England.
It has a population of 91,461 (2017) and is the administrative headquarters of Harborough District Council. It sits on the Northamptonshire-Leicestershire border. The town was formerly at a crossroads for both road and rail; however the A6 now bypasses the town to the east and the A14 which carries east-west traffic is 6 miles (9.7 km) to the south. Market Harborough railway station is served by East Midlands Trains services on the Midland Main Line with direct services north to Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Sheffield and south to London St Pancras. Rail services to Rugby and Peterborough ended in 1966.
Market Harborough is located in an area which was formerly a part of the Rockingham Forest, a royal hunting forest used by the medieval monarchs starting with William I. Rockingham Road takes its name from the forest. The forest's original boundaries stretched from Market Harborough through to Stamford and included the settlements at Corby, Kettering, Desborough, Rothwell, Thrapston and Oundle.
The steeple of St Dionysius' Church rises directly from the street, as there is no churchyard. It was constructed in grey stone in 1300 with the church itself a later building of about 1470. Next to the church stands the Old Grammar School, a small timber building dating from 1614. The ground floor is open, creating a covered market area and there is a single room on the first floor. It has become a symbol of the town. The nearby square is largely pedestrianised and surrounded by buildings of varying styles. The upper end of the High Street is wide and contains mostly unspoiled Georgian buildings.
Market Harborough has two villages within its confines: Great Bowden lies over a hill about a mile from the town centre; Little Bowden is less than half a mile from the town centre. The three centres have largely coalesced through ribbon development and infill, although Great Bowden continues to retain a strong village identity.

Three miles north west of the town is Foxton Locks – ten canal locks consisting of two staircases each of five locks, on the Leicester line of the Grand Union Canal. It is named after the nearby village of Foxton where there is one of a very few remaining road swing bridges over the canal.
Market Harborough station is on the Midland Main Line and operated by East Midlands Trains. London St Pancras International is 70 minutes south. Northbound trains operate to Leicester (15 minutes), Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds and York. Leicester connections east and west. From November 2007 St Pancras has Eurostar services to the continent.

Leeds is the largest city in the county of West Yorkshire, England. Leeds is to the east of Bradford, north of Sheffield and to the south-west of York. The city forms the main area of the City of Leeds metropolitan borough, which also includes the towns of Horsforth, Morley, Otley, Pudsey, Rothwell and Wetherby.
Leeds was a small manorial borough in the 13th century, becoming a major centre for the production and trading of wool in the 17th and 18th centuries, then a major mill town during the Industrial Revolution; wool was still the dominant industry, but flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing, and other industries were also important. From being a market town in the valley of the River Aire in the 16th century, Leeds expanded and absorbed the surrounding villages to become a populous urban centre by the mid-20th century. Leeds attained City status in 1893.
Leeds is the central city of the Leeds City Region, a classification for the city region's metropolitan area. The city region has a population of over 3 million, making it the second most populated metropolitan city region in the United Kingdom, behind Greater London Leeds displays a variety of natural and built landmarks. Natural landmarks include such diverse sites as the gritstone outcrop of Otley Chevin and the Fairburn Ings RSPB reserve. The city's parks at Roundhay and Temple Newsam have long been owned and maintained by the council for the benefit of ratepayers and among the open spaces in the centre of Leeds are Millennium Square, City Square, Park Square and Victoria Gardens. This last is the site of the central city war memorial: there are 42 other war memorials in the suburbs, towns and villages in the district.
The built environment embraces edifices of civic pride like Morley Town Hall and the trio of buildings in Leeds, Leeds Town Hall, Corn Exchange and Leeds City Museum by the architect Cuthbert Brodrick. The two white buildings on the Leeds skyline are the Parkinson building of Leeds University and the Civic Hall, with golden owls adorning the tops of the latter's twin spires.
Armley Mills, Tower Works, with its campanile-inspired towers, and the Egyptian-style Temple Works hark back to the city's industrial past, while the site and ruins of Kirkstall Abbey display the beauty and grandeur of Cistercian architecture. Notable churches are Leeds Minster (formerly Leeds Parish Church), St George's Church and Leeds Cathedral, in the city centre, and the Church of St John the Baptist, Adel and Bardsey Parish Church in quieter locations. Notable non-conformist chapels include the Salem Chapel, dating back to 1791 and notably the birthplace of Leeds United Football Club in 1919.
Leeds is one of only a few UK cities outside of London to have a significant number of high-rise buildings, the 112-metre (367 ft) tower of Bridgewater Place, also known as The Dalek, is part of a major office and residential development and the region's tallest building; it can be seen for miles (kilometres) around. Bridgewater Place has been the subject of debate as its erection in 2007 caused significant wind tunnel effects, channeling strong wind currents across Victoria Road. There have been numerous injuries attributed to the inadequate architecture of this building and Water Lane is frequently closed when high winds are expected. In 2017 Leeds City Council undertook construction work in an attempt to deflect the wind from street level and the building owners of Bridgewater Place agreed to pay to cover the public money being spent. Among other Skyscrapers the 37-storey Sky Plaza to the north of the city centre stands on higher ground so that its 106 metres (348 ft) is higher than Bridgewater Place.
Elland Road (football) and Headingley Stadium (cricket and rugby) are well known to sports enthusiasts and the White Rose Centre is a well-known retail outlet.It is the A62, A63, A64, A65, A647 and A660 roads' starting points. The city is situated on the A58, A61, M1 and M62 - the latter two intersect to its south of Leeds and the A1(M) passes to the east.
The radial M621 takes traffic into central Leeds from the M62 and M1. There is an Inner Ring Road with part motorway status and an Outer Ring Road. Part of the city centre is pedestrianised, and is encircled by the clockwise-only Loop Road. The East Leeds Orbital Route's construction started in summer 2019 with completion due by the end of 2021.

What are the greenest cities in the United Kingdom? As the world prepares for the COP26 climate change summit, we can't afford to be indifferent toward the greenest spaces. We believe we too can play our part in connecting researchers with realities in their attempt to rank the UK’s cities for sustainability. We thus present our own list of the 10 greenest cities in the UK.
Among the factors brought to bear are green space, car and energy use, air quality, and waste and recycling process. Even if you don’t have any sort of academic interest in this, you should still be interested in places you can consider the 10 greenest cities in the UK.
10. Belfast, Northern Ireland
Belfast, the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland is what we are looking to be among the 10 greenest cities in the UK. The city on the banks of the River Lagan’s east coast is the 12th-largest city in the UK and the second-largest on the island of Ireland with a population of 343,542 as of 2019.
More interestingly, the city is now being recognized as one of the greenest cities in the UK. It’s also among cities in the world pioneering sustainability. It has secured a place for itself as a city that is committed to sustainable development and growth. The Belfast Smart City project has been hailed worldwide as one that is bound to improve the health and wellbeing of the residents of Britain.
9. Newcastle upon Tyne, England
Newcastle upon Tyne shares more in common with Copenhagen, Denmark, and southern Sweden than the same latitude. It’s one of the greenest cities in the United Kingdom. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as it did to some people when they learned that Newcastle-upon-Tyne was a year’s winner claiming the top spot as the greenest city in the sustainability audit of Britain. Consideration should be given to the very fact that it used to be choked with smoke in the past and had now cleared its air by putting the environment top on agenda.
Newcastle upon Tyne should be an inspiration for all polluted cities of the world that they can clean up their cities if they want to.
8. Nottingham, England
The next one of the 10 greenest cities in the UK is Nottingham, a city in Nottinghamshire. According to a Sunday Times article published on September 1, 2017, 15.3 percent of Nottingham is covered in accessible green space. This made it the second greenest city then in Britain. An overall 25 percent of the city is made up of parks and green spaces.
Up to 32 parks in this city have been recognized by Keep Britain Tidy, an environmental charity, as amongst the very best in the UK. Nottingham also has several awards that recognize and highlight the value the city authorities place on their parks and green spaces as an important part of people’s lives and well-being in the city.
7. Glasgow, Scotland
In 2020, Glasgow won the top prize of Global Green City at an online awards ceremony organized by the Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFSH). Called the Global Green City award and supported by the United Nation's Environment Program, the award puts Glasgow in the same bracket as Vancouver, Vienna, and Yokohama among many other European, American, and Asian cities that have been previous winners of the award.
Glasgow got this award based on its efforts that scored it high across several criteria including planning, low carbon, energy efficiency, transportation, open spaces, buildings, and the economy. Glasgow scored a total of 32 percent on these and that placed it second in the table.
