Ledbury, Ross-on-Wye, Ludlow town tours, beautiful towns for day trips - Vanlife UK

In this video, we visit 3 gorgeous towns in Herefordshire and Shropshire. Ledbury is a really attractive place, characterful Tudor style black and white houses and lots of eateries.
Ross-on-Wye was delightful with stunning views over the Wye Valley and lots of independent shops and trades.
Ludlow was a real surprise to us and had amazing buildings everywhere. We always find it interesting when you can imagine how it was in older times and this town has reminders of that everywhere and also a vibrant feel to it.

Places to see in ( Ross on Wye - UK )

Places to see in ( Ross on Wye - UK )

Ross-on-Wye is a small market town in south eastern Herefordshire, England, located on the River Wye, and on the northern edge of the Forest of Dean. Ross-on-Wye was the birthplace of the British tourist industry. In 1745, the rector, Dr John Egerton, started taking friends on boat trips down the valley from his rectory at Ross. The Wye Valley's attraction was its river scenery, its precipitous landscapes, and its castles and abbeys, which were accessible to seekers of the Picturesque.

The Prospect was created by John Kyrle and offers superb views over the Wye and to the Welsh mountains. The land was rented by John Kyrle from the Marquess of Bath in 1696 and turned into a garden and walking area.

The town of Ross on Wye is known for its independent shops, picturesque streets and market square with its market hall. Regular Thursday and Saturday markets are held at the red sandstone Market House building in Ross on Wye centre, which was built between 1650 and 1654 replacing the older, probably wooden Booth Hall.

Opposite the church, The Prospect is a public garden offering a view of the famous horseshoe bend in the River Wye, as well as views as far as the Black Mountains. The ruins of Wilton Castle, which lie to the west of the town, have now been restored and are open to visitors. Ross on Wye has a number of sculptures created by Walenty Pytel, the left bank of the River Wye shows two of these. Despite the commonly held belief that both depict swans, one in fact shows ducks.

The former Ross-on-Wye railway station was a junction railway station on the Hereford, Ross and Gloucester Railway constructed to the north of the town. It was the terminus of the Ross and Monmouth Railway, which joined the Hereford, Ross and Gloucester just south of the station. Today, although the nearest railway station is Ledbury on the Cotswold Line, Gloucester has a much better bus connection with Ross, and is a major interchange on the national rail network.

( Ross on Wye - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Ross on Wye . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Ross on Wye - UK

Here are a few clips and quotes from websites about Ross On Wye:
Ross-on-Wye is a market town in England, near the border with Wales

Ross is well known for its many excellent independent and specialist shops, galleries, restaurants, cafes and hotels, many of which are dog friendly. There is also a Vintage Shopping Trail. Dominating the town is the spire of St Mary the Virgin Parish Church and next to it is the famous Prospect Gardens.

The town, located in the beautiful Wye river valley region, is famous for its panoramic views and attracts many tourists. It is also the centre of a highly productive agricultural district.

Ross-on-Wye Town Council is responsible for running the twice weekly markets which are held every Thursday and Saturday from 9.00am to 3.00pm.

Welcome to Ross on Wye
Embraced by the River Wye, Ross-on-Wye is an inviting place to potter. When William Gilpin wrote Britain’s first travel guidebook about the Wye Valley in 1782, he sparked a trend for ‘picturesque tourism’. Today, as well as enjoying that same scenic beauty, you can browse independent shops, saunter alongside the town’s 19th-century mock-Gothic walls and Gazebo Tower folly and admire pastel-hued dwellings tumbling down the hillside to the river.

The town is the centre of a region historically dubbed Archenfield or ‘Land of Hedgehogs’, and you’ll find examples of the icon in St Mary’s Church, dating back to the 17th century, and on more recent memorials to the Boer War and Second World War.

250 years of tourism
William Gilpin may not be a household name but his legacy has led to one of biggest industries in Britain.

It was 250 years ago in 1770 that he took the first step by organising boat trips along the River Wye, and writing a seminal bestselling book ‘Observations of the River Wye’.

From those humble but visionary beginnings what was later described as The Picturesque Movement came into being, giving a name to a new appreciation of the natural world and its beauty.

The Wye Valley is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, much as it was 250 years ago. This year, 2020, heralds a year long calender of arts, crafts and fun events to celebrate his achievement and the beauty of the Wye Valley. More information at:

Ross-on-Wye is voted UK’s best loved market town
Ross-on-Wye near the forest of dean has been voted the UK’s best-loved market town by a leading coach tour company.

National Express Managing Director Tom Stables said: “With its picturesque location and stunning Market House it’s hardly surprising Ross-on-Wye is regarded as one of the best towns in the UK. It’s tough to think of anything more quintessentially British than a market town and we think that’s worth celebrating”.

Ross-on-Wye is a small town in Herefordshire, England. The town sits on the River Wye and is set in the Welsh Marches. Ross-on-Wye has an historically important town centre with a market square and many interesting buildings.

VANLIFE UK/ROSS ON WYE/The WYE Valley/Herefordshire/England/United Kingdom

Embraced by the River Wye, Ross-on-Wye is an inviting place to potter. When William Gilpin wrote Britain's first travel guidebook about the Wye Valley in 1782, he sparked a trend for 'picturesque tourism'. Today, as well as enjoying that same scenic beauty, you can browse independent shops, saunter alongside the town's 19th-century mock-Gothic walls and Gazebo Tower folly, and admire pastel-hued dwellings tumbling down the hillside to the river. Ross-on-Wye Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Herefordshire, and around eight miles away from the England-Wales border, is the town of Ross-on-Wye.

The name Ross-on-Wye is derived from the Welsh or Celtic, ‘Rhosan’ meaning ‘a promontory’ i.e. a raised mass of land. The 'on-Wye' suffix was added in 1931 by the General Post Office to help differentiate it from other similarly named places named, such as Ross in Scotland. It was granted a market charter in 1138 by King Stephen.

Between 1650 and 1654 the red sandstone Market House was built, where it stands to this day in the centre of the town. Overall, the architecture is a blend of Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings, with a few modern additions.

The name perhaps most closely associated with Ross-on-Wye is John Kyrle, a.k.a. The Man of Ross. Born in 1637, Kyrle studied law before inheriting the family estate in 1650. This included the timber-framed building overlooking Market House, known as The Man of Ross House, which can be seen prominently today. Kyrle had adopted a frugal lifestyle, and opted to spend his inheritance on his local community. His investments in Ross included public gardens, clean water and education.

In 1855 a railway station opened in Ross. This was a junction station on the Hereford, Ross and Gloucester Railway. However, in 1965 the station was closed as part of the Beeching cuts. The UK lost over 2,000 stations during this period as they were deemed economically inefficient with the increased uptake in road transport.

Ross-on-Wye is said to be the birthplace of British tourism. In the 18th Century, the Rector of Ross developed his Wye Tour along the river from Ross to Chepstow. After taking the tour, William Gilpin published the UK’s first guide book and by the end of the 18th Century the package tour was well established.

BRITAIN'S FIRST HOLIDAY DESTINATION | WYE VALLEY TOUR 🇬🇧 [1/3]

I’m stepping back in time & visiting the scene of Britain's first holiday destination - a river boat tour through the stunning Wye Valley on the border between England & Wales. The birthplace of British tourism.
🇬🇧 You can see all of my UK videos here →

Centuries ago wealthy tourists came from all over Britain to take the famous Wye Valley river boat tour that William Gilpin had written about in his bestselling guide book ‘Observations on the River Wye’ published in 1782. It was the beginning of British Tourism as we know it.

A few years earlier in the 1750’s a rector named John Egerton began entertaining his guests by taking them on a boat tour on the River Wye.

The landscape and picturesque scenes that his guests were introduced to between Ross-on-Wye & Chepstow exceeded their expectations and introduced them to a whole new world. The dawn of the picturesque movement was glimmering & landscape appreciation was suddenly becoming fashionable. In 1770 William Gilpin found himself on the tour & it changed his life forever.

Join me as I drive to the great scenes William Gilpin wrote about in his guidebook - including the starting point outside the Royal Hotel in Ross-on-Wye, the historic Norman ruins of Goodrich Castle and the incredible river views presented by Yat Rock at Symonds Yat.

We’ll also visit the little village of Wilton and see the wonderful grade I listed 16th century bridge & that crosses the River Wye as well as a historic castle that is now privately owned. Later on we’ll walk through parts of the Forest of Dean to see a hand-pulled ferry crossing the River Wye. The Wye Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) and so there will be lots to see and do on the tour.

Let’s travel back in time and imagine what it would have been like to join a river boat tour in the magnificent Wye Valley.
