5. Sighișoara is an enchanting city located in the historic district of Transylvania in Romania. Its history dates back to the 1100s which makes the place perfect for history buffs. The small town with its ancient churches and walled town center looks a lot like those you’d see in fairy tales. The old Saxon city is a UNESCO World Heritage site composed of only three main streets, so the entire place is easy to explore.
Also within this walled town is a restaurant called “Casa Dracula” the birthplace of Vlad Tepes more popularly known in history as Vlad the Impaler or yes Dracula in pop culture. Many believe Bram Stoker’s Dracula was based on this Romanian historical figure with a penchant for impaling enemies on stakes and displaying them for everyone to see.
4. Located three to four kilometers away from the Mostar airport, Blagaj is a quaint little village perfect for those looking for a peaceful retreat. It is famous for its Dervish monastery that sits at the foot of a cliff amidst a mesmerizing river that seems to flow out from the foot of the mountain. The monastery was founded during the height of the Ottoman empire around 600 years ago.
Numerous restaurants line the side of the river where you can enjoy local cuisine and savor the serene ambiance of the place. There are also other shops in the area you can explore. The site is a picturesque tourist spot that has become Herzegovina's tourist center.
3. Mysterious Bran castle is Romania’s most famous castle and home to the notorious Walachian Prince Vlad Tepes a.k.a. Vlad the Impaler. The place is known throughout the world as Dracula’s Castle since it’s is believed that Bram Stoker used the castle as inspiration for Dracula’s fortress. This enchanting medieval structure sits imposingly atop a 200-foot cliff in the Transylvanian Alps.
Its location atop a cliff overlooking the towns below is both dramatic and imposing. The main draw of this gothic fortress is its historical significance and mysteriously eerie appeal. It is one of Romania’s most treasured tourist attractions.
2. There are several fascinating cave monasteries throughout Moldova that were hand-carved from the sides of limestone cliffs. Many scientists believe that there are more cave monasteries than are currently known. Among the most well known in Moldova are the Tipova (Rezina district), Saharna (Rezina district), Butuceni (Orhei district), Japca (Floresti district); Cosauti (Soroca district), Calaraseuca (Ocnita district), Molovata (Dubasari district), and Soroca.
Carved on the side of the cliffs these monasteries overlook vast bodies of water and are composed of inner chambers and interlinked cells built into the side of the mountain. Most of these intriguing structures date back to as far as the 11th century.
1. Tallinn is one of the most beautiful yet underrated cities in Europe. It’s winding cobblestone steps, beautiful church bell towers, and charming medieval Old Town make it an ideal destination for tourists who have gone weary of other more popular and expensive tourist destinations located West of Europe.
Tallinn is home to Kalamaja, a charming fishermen’s village that features the biggest harbor in Estonia and the Old Town with its beautiful cobblestone streets lined with small quirky shops. Visitors can wander around the narrow streets, enchanting courtyards, and cafes like the Maiasmokk that has been serving scrumptious Estonian meals since 1864.

I had a crazy idea, to get to Bălănești Hill, Romanian Dealul Bălănești or just Balanesti by bike. I cycled almost 100 km in two days. And I completed my goal. But it was not easy. However, I made two planning mistakes. First, I underestimated the condition of the local roads. Second, bike rental in Moldova. It was not a bike in the best condition. However, I succeeded climbing on the top of Moldova - Dealul Bălănești! Anyway, it was great and I enjoyed the Moldovan countryside.
Můj šílený nápad, dostat se na nejvyšší vrchol Moldavska Dealul Bălănești s kolem se podařil. Akorát to nebylo úplně lehké a ideální. Pří plánování jsem udělal dvě zásadní chyby. Podcenil jsem stav místních silnic a to jsem věděl, že jsou ve špatném stavu, ale nečekal jsem, že občas prakticky úplně zmizí. A podcenil jsem půjčení kola. Nebylo to kolo v nejlepší kondici. Moldavsko tedy poměrně potrápilo, ale přesto jsem si výlet po Moldavsku užil. I když můj zadek po těch téměř 100 km na místním kole říkal něco jiného.

The Holy Trinity Monastery - Saharna, Moldova
David’s Been Here is touring all the top sites and best day trips from Moldova’s capital city of Chisinau. In this short clip, David brings us the Holy Trinity Monastery, located in the town of Saharna. A 90-minute drive out from Chisinau, this picturesque monastery is divided into both “new” and “old” parts, dating back to 1495 and 1777, respectively. Home to 16 resident monks, the relics of St. Cuvios Macarie and a “footprint” of St. Maria (on the monastery’s highest cliff), the Holy Trinity Monastery is the biggest religious pilgrimage site in the entire country. Also home to the Rock Cave Church of the Annunciation, follow David through the forest as he brings us to this incredible historic site- founded by Russian Orthodox monks back in 1495. With so much to see and do in and around the area, this trip out to Saharna is definitely a day trip from Chisinau well worth taking!

2-6. March 2022. For my third drive into Moldova, I decided during this Russian invasion of Ukraine to focus on Soviet buildings, border signs, mosaics, and WWII monuments; and alcohol. A week into it, and I say so far so good. I'm particularly pleased with the bubble-shaped Communist listening post we found near Mircești in Ungheni District, and Object 1180, an anti-nuclear bunker that was the largest secret Soviet site. Lastly, it was a bit interesting to look across the borders to Ukraine (from Soroca), Romania (from the Nature Reserve Pădurea Domnească / Princely Forest where European Bison roam), and the break-away state of Transnistria (from Rezina).

Here in Moldova, Peace Corps supports 4 programs: English Education (EE), Heath Education in Schools and Communities (HESC), Community and Organizational Development (COD), and Agriculture and Rural Business Development (ARBD). I recently had the chance to visit my friend Katie at her site in Rezina, Moldova. Katie is an English teacher and like many of the volunteers who work in schools, Katie had never taught before she came to Moldova. Mănăstirea Saharna, în întregul ei ansamblu, este unul din cele mai vechi așezăminte monahale din cadrul Bisericii Ortodoxe din Republica Moldova. Ansamblul monastic este compus din două mănăstiri: una rupestră (Bunavestire) și alta terestră (Sf. Treime). Istoria mănăstirii rupestre se cunoaște foarte puțin, neștiindu-se data precisă a întemeierii și cine sunt întemeietorii.

Dacă ajungeți în Republica Moldova este imperativ să treceți pe lista de obiective turistice de vizitat și Țîpova .Aici veți găsi acest complex mănăstiresc rupestru cu multitudinea de chilii săpate în stânca calcaroasă în care dea lungul secolelor s-au rugat numeroși duhovnici și au rezistat tuturor pericolelor dușmanilor .Acum se modernizează,se lucrează la transformarea acestor locuri într-o zonă de top ,de turism .Peisajele sunt superbe ,Nistrul se scurge frumos,calm și dacă aveți timp puteți face un drum și pe la cascadele din acest loc pe care le face pârâul Țîpova spre vărsarea lui în Nistru.
