Location.
1. Jericho is in the Jordan Valley, about 8 miles (13 km.) north of the Dead Sea and about 15 miles (24 km.) east of Jerusalem.
2. It’s situated at 900 ft. (275 m.) below sea level, making it the lowest city in the world.
3. Jericho claims to be the oldest city in the world that has been continuously inhabited.
4. Its name means “City of Palms.”
5. It was located at the crossroads of two main travel routes. It had a north-south route that ran through the Jordan Valley and an east-west route that connected the east side of the Jordan River with Jerusalem, the Samaritan cities, and the coastal plain cities of the Mediterranean Sea.
6. It has a year-round climate with lots of sunshine.
7. Tel Jericho is also known today as Tell Es-Sultan.
Historical Background
1. Jericho was a well-fortified Canaanite city before the arrival of the Israelites.
2. It’s an ancient city with about 6–7 thousand years of history.
3. Archaeologists have uncovered 23 levels of civilizations in Tel Jericho.
4. The city was fortified with double walls.
• The walls were constructed of large stones at the base and mud bricks continuing upwards.
• The exterior wall’s stone base was about 15 feet high (3 m.), and the mud-brick wall on top of it was another 20–25 feet tall (8 m.), for a total of around 40 feet (13 m.).
• The inner wall was constructed the same way; only it rose even higher than the exterior wall for a total height of around 50 feet (15 m.).
• The width of the walls were around 20 feet (6 m.) wide, and people lived in them (Josh. 2:15).
• These double walls were enormous and overwhelming in size and strength.
5. Jericho was given by Marc Antony (Roman general under Julius Caesar) to Cleopatra (Pharaoh of Egypt) as a wedding gift in 36 BC.
6. King Herod built a winter palace in Jericho around 20 BC and would later die there as well.
7. During the Byzantine period, homes and churches were built in the area.
8. During the Crusader period, the town was moved about a mile (1.6 km.) southeast of Tel Jericho.

Qasr al-Yehud (Castle of the Jews) is a baptismal location on the Jordan River. The site is in the Palestinian Authority of the West Bank 15 km from the northern end of the Dead Sea and southeast of Jericho. Qasr Al-Yehud is believed to be the Biblical site where John baptized Jesus; this symbolized his spiritual birth.
This stretch of the river is also where Joshua led the Israelites to cross the River Jordan into the Promised Land. The Prophet Elijah is said to have ascended to heaven from this location. The area covers both banks of the Jordan River – on the east bank in the Kingdom of Jordan and on the west bank at Qasr al-Yehud.
Visiting Qasr al-Yehud
Qasr al-Yehud was closed to visitors from 1967 to 1994 when the area was a no man’s land. Following the peace agreement between Jordan and Israel the site was reopened in 2011 and restored. It is now accessible to visitors with the addition of handrails and steps leading down into the water.
Several churches have been built near Qasr al-Yehud over the years beginning in the Byzantine era but only ruins have survived. Two new outdoor chapels are now used by visiting Christians of all denominations. Special celebrations take place here on January 6th for the Feast of Epiphany by the Western Churches; January 19th for the Theophany by Eastern Orthodox Churches and during the Easter weekend.
Two Baptismal Sites of the Jordan River
You may have heard of an alternate baptismal site called Yardenit, located in northern Israel near the southern end of the Sea of Galilee. Yardenit is also on the Jordan River and was created as an alternative site for Christian pilgrims who wanted to be baptized in the Jordan but could not reach Qasr al-Yahud due to logistic and security obstacles. Qasr e-Yahud is closer to the geographical location described in the Bible as Jesus’ baptismal site but Yardenit is a good alternative when it is not possible to reach Qasr al-Yahud.

The oldest church in the world was discovered in Jordan few years ago. It is located in few kilometers of Mafraq city in a region called Rehab. Dating to the period AD33-70, the small underground church supposedly served as a place of worship and a home. It is suggested that 70 persecuted Christians who fled from Jerusalem once used the church. These 70 people lived in the church, practicing their faith in total secrecy until the Romans embraced Christianity as a religion a few hundred years later. Accessible only by narrow stairs leading to the underground space, the church resembles a cave and is twelve meters long and seven meters wide.

According to the Hebrew Bible, the Israelites conquered the Canaanite city of Jericho when they arrived in the Promised Land. The walls of Jericho collapsed at the sounds of the people shouting and the ram’s horns of Joshua’s army (Josh 6:20). Their fall echoed through history, making the site of ancient Jericho, at present-day Tell es-Sultan, one of the first places to be explored during the pioneering era of biblical archaeology. Four archaeological expeditions between 1907 and 2014 have focused on the site, searching for the walls of Jericho. Archaeologists have discovered a complex system of fortifications, destroyed and rebuilt many times.
In the early third millennium B.C.E., the people of Jericho took a decisive step and constructed a massive mudbrick wall surrounding the city. This impressive Early Bronze Age fortification consisted of an inner wall about 4 meters thick and an outer wall 2 meters thick, both built of sundried reddish mudbricks on stone foundations. Blind rooms in the corridor between the parallel walls were sometimes filled with soil or whitish crushed limestone. This filling was not white ash from Joshua’s attack, as was previously thought, but was intended to strengthen the double wall system. An external ditch gave the wall added protection.
In the 24th century B.C.E., a dramatic conflagration destroyed the city wall and the entire city. (The cause of the blaze, perhaps an enemy attack or an earthquake, remains under debate.) The ruinously burnt and collapsed city wall, still visible centuries after its destruction, was so impressive that the later biblical author identified it as the wall of Joshua’s attack, as did the earliest archaeologists who explored the site (for example, Frederick Jones Bliss and John Garstang).
Several centuries later, in the second millennium B.C.E., Jericho became a powerful Canaanite city, again well fortified with mudbrick walls strengthened by three successive plastered ramparts. These powerful fortifications were brought to an end by another major conflagration (caused by an earthquake or Egyptian forces).
Between 1952 and 1958, British archaeologist K.M. Kenyon showed through stratigraphic digging that the wall, which Garstang and others claimed was part of Joshua’s conquered city, was actually far older than the hypothetical date of Joshua’s conquest (the end of the Late Bronze Age, in the late 13th century B.C.E.). Jericho’s world-famous fortifications permanently collapsed around 1550 B.C.E., at the end of the Middle Bronze Age and well before the time assumed for Joshua’s conquest. They were never reconstructed. No archaeological evidence corroborates the biblical account of what happened in Jericho.
The ruins of the Bronze Age walls were apparently so impressive that they inspired the biblical author to place Jericho at the heart of the narrative of the Israelite conquest. In fact, the profile of the ancient burnt city wall is still visible today as a protruding red edge along the summit of the mound, showing apparent traces of the fierce fire that destroyed it.
To quote Eric Cline, professor of ancient history and archaeology at The George Washington University, “It would seem that the only mystery still remaining about the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho is how it came to be written in the first place” (From Eden to Exile: Unraveling Mysteries of the Bible, p. 120).
