Hunedoara includes the most important Gothic-style castle in Transylvania. Castle Corvin also known as the Hunyad Castle was destroyed by fire five times, but it was rebuilt numerous times by Austro-Hungarian and later Romanian authorities. Aside from the castle, the town grew as an iron production center and a market for the nearby mountain regions. The city had the largest steel works in Romania, but activity gradually declined after the fall of the Iron Curtain due to market losses. This was a setback to the town's overall prosperity, which is now being restored through new investments.
