Rancho Cordova is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States which incorporated in 2003. It is part of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. The population of Rancho Cordova was 64,776 at the 2010 census. Rancho Cordova is the Sacramento area's largest employment sub-center, attracting over 50,000 commuters. The forgotten JAPANTOWN of Lodi!!!
Per one of the murals:
Lodi's Japantown is believed to be the third oldest permanent settlement of the Japanese people in the US. Located on main street it was a bustling place in the period between 1890 and WW2. Main street and the area around it housed restaurants, barber shops, a pool hall, a cigar store ,a bicycle shop, hotels, a laundry, a garage, a social organization, a farm labor contractor, a notions store, a Buddhist church, a fishmonger, and dry goods store, all owned by Japanese people. This mural was created to honor the Japanese Settlers and all their descendants for their contributions to the city of Lodi and its rural areas.
Aside from a Japantown, there was also a Chinatown in the same area. I couldn't find much information about the old Japantown nor Chinatown, but I assumed that Lodi was a great location due to its proximities to Sacramento, Stockton, and also the Sacramento Delta, where many Chinese and Japanese settled. The Japanese were eventually forced into relocation camps, and once the war was over, perhaps they never returned to Lodi due to a lack of opportunities. As for the Chinese, I'm assuming that like Stockton and Sacramento, they were able to assimilate elsewhere, and no longer needed a centralized Chinese community.
How does Lodi's Japantown/Chinatown look like today? Join me and find out!!
