Rakvere, Estonia. Walking in the city: food festival and order castle. 4K
What we expected was a quiet Saturday morning walk in Rakvere. But when we arrived we discovered ourselves at the food festival. Åland pancakes and Ukrainian deruny (potato pancakes) were really good!
At a top of the hill there is Rakvere Castle that has, throughout the ages, belonged to Danish kings and the Livonian Order as well as the Swedish and Polish states.
Today the castle is guarded by a white cat 😊
Nearby there is a place to organize various folk events. Modern urban architecture at its best!

Rakvere Castle
The oldest known archeological traces of the ancient fortress on Rakvere's Vallimäe hill date from the 5th-6th century. Throughout the ages, Rakvere castle has belonged to Danish kings, knight-monks of the Livonian Order and the Swedish and Polish states. During the Polish-Swedish War of 1600-1629, the castle was partly blown up by the Polish troops in 1605, and later also by the Swedish army. The castle has lain in ruins ever since.
Today there is a theme park in the castle representing the everyday life of the 16th century.
Tarvas statue
Rakvere is also known now for its Tarvas statue of an aurochs, which was made by the Estonian sculptor Tauno Kangro. It is thought to be the largest animal statue in the Baltic region. It is situated on the edge of Vallimägi hill and was erected for the town's 700th birthday. Along with the granite block it sits on, the statue is seven meters long and four meters high and weighs about seven tons. The statue is made out of bronze. The names of the companies and private people who financed it are engraved in the granite block.

The castle in Rakvere offers a lot of excitement for the entire family!
When you enter the castle, you will find yourself in a theme park representing the everyday life of the 16th century. There, both young and old visitors can spend an exciting day as they dress up as knights and warriors, enjoy various entertainers, and learn a thing or two about the life of people in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.
Additionally, there is a wine cellar, a torture chamber, a death room and a hell, a Red Lanterns Street, a medieval brothel, a barber's shop, and an alchemist's workshop.
Shenkenberg Tavern, which is located in the stronghold, offers meals made after medieval recipes.
Rakvere Castle Hell - Rakvere, Estonia
Rakvere Castle is one of the oldest, most important, and darkest castles in Estonian history, having been built on top of ancient strongholds in the early 1200s. Used as a defense system, the Knights of Rakvere used forms of psychological torture to either scare their prisoners to death or worse, just enough to get them to talk, rendering them insane.
Our tour began through these varying torture rooms: Torture, Death, and Hell, though almost whimsical experiences that were meant to reduce these heavier subjects to a haunted house feel.
Not many can say they have been to “hell and back”, but for those of us on that tour, we can. “Hell” is a pitch dark maze of hallways that take you over different terrains (some of them make you feel as though you’re sinking into the floor) and through different textures, designed to psychologically torture you into believing spiders are crawling on you (and the like).
I turned on my cell phone light because one, I’m terrified of the dark and two, there were far too many people going through the hallways to not trip over something (or someone).
