Behold! The most majestic ruins I've seen in Europe so far. The Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi) in Agrigento, Sicily, Italy, are much more spectacular than I expected. Honestly, I was getting a little bored with ruins in Italy, but I was told I must visit Agrigento.
I'm so glad I listened to those who urged me to go! Agrigento's (formerly Akragas, a Greek city in southern Sicily) ruins of the Valley of the Temples are huge with plaques throughout the miles-wide park explaining the importance of the structures you see. I heard Rick Steves say that if you want to see Greek ruins, go to Sicily! In Agrigento, you can see the outstanding Valle dei Templi and begin to truly appreciate Sicily's rich and diverse history.
If asked What are the best sights in Sicily? I'd immediately respond with Agrigento on the list. The Valley of the Temples is not just a must-see, it's easily one of the best sights in Sicily.

Agrigento Roman Temples in sicily UNESCO world Heritage in Italy , Агригенто
The famous Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples, where seven monumental Greek temples in the Doric style were constructed during the 6th and 5th centuries BC. Now excavated and partially restored, they constitute some of the largest and best-preserved ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece itself. They are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The best-preserved of the temples are two very similar buildings traditionally attributed to the goddesses Hera Lacinia and Concordia (though archaeologists believe this attribution to be incorrect). The latter temple is remarkably intact, due to its having been converted into a Christian church in 597 AD. Both were constructed to a peripteral hexastyle design. The area around the Temple of Concordia was later re-used by early Christians as a catacomb, with tombs hewn out of the rocky cliffs and outcrops. The other temples are much more fragmentary, having been toppled by earthquakes long ago and quarried for their stones. The largest by far is the Temple of Olympian Zeus, built to commemorate the Battle of Himera in 480 BC: it is believed to have been the largest Doric temple ever built. Although it was apparently used, it appears never to have been completed; construction was abandoned after the Carthaginian invasion of 406 BC.
We visited Agrigento and Valley of the Temples from Catania on the way to Palermo on the next day after we visited Catania, Syracuse and Noto. ( 2 nd day in Sicily)

One of Sicily’s most famous historical attractions is without a doubt the Valley of the Temples, just outside Agrigento.
This splendid archaeological park consists of eight temples (and various other remains) built between about 510 BC and 430 BC: the Temple of Hera, the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Heracles, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Hephaestos, the Temple of Demeter, and the Temple of Asclepius (the God of Medicine). Apart from this latter, which is to be found on the banks of the Akragas river, all are situated in the same area on rocky crests south of modern day Agrigento (not really in a Valley at all!).

The Grotta del Cammello (Cave of the Camel), was named after a rock at the entrance, which is shaped like a camel. The sea cave is quite spectacular with its huge opening in the ceiling, sun falls through the hole on the sea water producing an eerie turquoise glow.

IL SITO ARCHEOLOGICO PETRA DI CALATHANSUDERJ
A 5 km dal paese di Comitini, si raggiunge la Petra di Calathansuderj (toponimo di origine araba). E' un ammasso roccioso isolato alto 30 metri che si presenta allo sguardo ricco di grotticelle e tombe.
Le tombe a forno e i ritrovamenti archeologici, confermano l'esistenza di un villaggio preistorico, ma è nel periodo bizantino che nelle sue viscere si forma un fitto complesso di ambienti e gallerie su più livelli, che danno origine a una fortezza preposta al controllo del territorio e delle vie di comunicazione che lo attraversavano. Questa funzione venne mantenuta anche nel periodo arabo, poi normanno e fino al XIII secolo.
Sulla parete principale sono stati ricavati artificialmente due grandi vani, che permettono di dominare il territorio circostante, oggi protetti da una cancellata.
Il museo Antiquarium, allestito all’interno del Palazzo Bellacera di Comitini, raccoglie i reperti archeologici ritrovati nella zona.

THE PETRA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF CALATHANSUDERJ 5 km from the town of Comitini, you reach the Petra of Calathansuderj (a toponym of Arab origin). It is an isolated rock mass 30 meters high which appears full of caves and tombs. The oven tombs and archaeological finds confirm the existence of a prehistoric village, but it was in the Byzantine period that a dense complex of rooms and galleries on multiple levels was formed in its bowels, which gave rise to a fortress responsible for controlling the territory and the communication routes that crossed it. This function was also maintained in the Arab period, then the Norman one and up to the 13th century. Two large rooms have been artificially created on the main wall, which allow the surrounding area to be dominated, now protected by a gate. The Antiquarium museum, set up inside Palazzo Bellacera in Comitini, collects the archaeological finds found in the area. description taken from
