Not all outdoor markets are created equal. Les Halles de Questembert, built in the 17th century on the site of an older market, were the largest market structure erected in Brittany under Louis XIV (the Sun King.)
The building's roof has been a Historical Monument of France since the 1920s. As it should.

Travel in France: Ploërmel - The Best of Brittany? Is it Worth a Visit? It's Outdoor Market is WOW!
Looking for top travel tips? Is Ploërmel, France one of the best places in Brittany to visit?? It may not be the most common place to vacation - some French people might even say, You're going WHERE?? - but this Breton town has a lot more to offer than meets the eye. And it makes an excellent home base from which to explore the region. Whether you are staying for a short visit or a long one. And yes - you can see a lot even without a car.
Ploërmel has one of the best weekly outdoor farmer's markets I've ever been to. So plan a stay that includes a kitchen. You are going to want to cook for sure. It's a foodie's paradise! There are several boulangeries/patisseries (bakeries/pastry shops), several BIG supermarkets and many great places to eat out (even aside from Kebab Chez Tonton 56 😆) but that Friday market will make your little eyes go WOW I guarantee you.
If you like the outdoors, Ploërmel has one of the biggest lakes in Brittany and thus lots of watersports to enjoy as well as miles of phenomenal bike and walking trails and places to hike around. There are great museums, a bowling alley, a movie theater, local soccer/football games and great sites, towns and villages close by to explore.
I spent a month in Ploërmel and wrote a blog post about it for my website, Reganland.com. I wanted to see what it would be like to put together a video version of that post so I used it as a voice-over script and then assembled photos, video and web page content to create the video.
I won't be doing that again. 🤣
It was fun - a lot of work, but fun - however, based on what I learned through that process - next time, I'll use a different process! If I'd taken more photos and videos, that would have helped, but next time my whole approach will be different.
In any case - I hope you enjoy the video and even more so, I hope you make it out to Ploërmel sometime if you've not already been.

Back to Gallo-Roman times in Lyon
Lyon, once better known as Lugdunum, the former capital of the Three Gauls, reserves many surprises. A favorite area of mine since I lived there during my college years, have been the steep slopes of la Croix-Rousse, a former working-class neighborhood, and the heart of the silk trade, overlooking the city.
This is Lyon's other hill, (Fourvière draws more visitor traffic,) and I am taking you to the other amphitheater. Stick with Véro, and you will look at France through the eyes of a native and explore off the beaten-path. :-)

Canal Saint Martin, Paris, France
Welcome to Paris's 10th arrondissement! Welcome to le Canal Saint Martin.
Meet the new Parisian water fountains!
Everyone knows the iconic Wallace fountains, a gift to the city of Paris by English art collector and philanthropist Richard Wallace in the second half of the 19th century, when water supplies had been damaged during the siege of Paris by Prussia (leading to the French defeat of 1870,) and the Commune insurrection in1871. The rumor has it the City of Paris is planning to phase the iconic fountains out, (cue in uproar, as these fountains are an integral part of the Paris cityscape.) There are several types of fountains in the French capital. In 2018, Paris introduced fountains dispensing flat and sparkling water. They can be hard to find. I used one in le Parc Montsouris (14th arrondissement) last year, and found another one by popular Canal St Martin earlier this week. L' eau pétillante (sparkling water) is delicious and super refreshing -- as les Riverains (locals) know full well. Drink up!
