Ngari Prefecture (Tibetan: མངའ་རིས་ས་ཁུལ་, Wylie: mnga' ris sa khul; simplified Chinese: 阿里地区; traditional Chinese: 阿里地區; pinyin: Ālǐ Dìqū) is a prefecture of China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Its capital is Gar County. Its administrative centre is the town of Burang Town. The largest settlement is Shiquanhe. Ngari Prefecture includes part of the Aksai Chin area, a disputed region claimed by India but over which China exercises administrative control. The paved Xinjiang-Tibet Highway (新藏公路) passes through this area. There are well-known prehistoric petroglyphs near the far western town of Rutog.

The town of Ngari lies 4,500 metres (14,800 ft) above sea level in northwest Tibet some 1,600 kilometres (990 mi) west of the capital, Lhasa. Ngari Gunsa Airport began operations on July 1, 2010, becoming the fourth civil airport on the Roof of the World (shortening the trip to Lhasa to one-and-a-half hours from three or four days by car). The other airports in Tibet are Lhasa Gonggar Airport in Lhasa, Qamdo Bamda Airport in Chamdo and Nyingchi Mainling Airport.[1]

Ngari was once the heart of the ancient kingdom of Guge. Later Ngari, along with Ü and Tsang, composed Ü-Tsang, one of the traditional provinces of Tibet, the others being Amdo and Kham.

Driving on China's National Highway 317, heading to Qamdo, the third largest city in Tibet - 4K

Driving on China's National Highway 317, heading to Qamdo, the third largest city in Tibet - 4K

Starting point: Dingqing County, Qamdo, Tibet Autonomous Region, China
End point: Qamdo, Tibet Autonomous Region, China
Distance: 236 km

Introduction to the section of National Highway 317 from Dingqing County to Qamdo

I. Overview
National Highway 317, also known as the Sichuan-Tibet North Line, is one of China's important roads into Tibet, famous for its unique natural scenery, cultural landscapes and complex topography. As part of National Highway 317, the section from Dingqing County to Qamdo has beautiful scenery along the way and complex and changeable road conditions. It is a popular route for self-driving enthusiasts to explore Tibet.

II. Overview of road conditions
From Dingqing County to Qamdo, this section is about 230 kilometers long (including 87 kilometers from Leiwuqi County to Qamdo), and the road conditions are generally good, but some sections are under construction and maintenance, so you need to pay attention to driving safety.
1. Dingqing County to Leiwuqi County section (about 143 kilometers)
Road conditions: Most sections have good road conditions, but there are a few kilometers of road repairs to the east of Shagong Township in Dingqing County, and the speed must be controlled at around 50 kilometers per hour. Other sections of the road meander along the mountainside, with an altitude of between 3,800 and 5,000 meters.
Note: There may be rockfall on some sections during the rainy season, so drive carefully.
2. Section from Leiwuqi County to Qamdo City (about 87 kilometers)
Road conditions: This section of the road is a common section of National Highway G214 and National Highway G317. Most of the road surface is newly paved and the road conditions are good. However, it should be noted that there are many bends when passing through the mountainside, and the speed must be controlled to ensure the safety of passing.
Important nodes: Passing through the Zhujiao La Mountain Tunnel (4,605 meters long, 4,200 meters above sea level), the tunnel was opened to traffic on September 26, 2019, greatly shortening the driving distance.

3. Scenic spots along the way
Zizhu Temple: Located about 5 kilometers east of Shagong Township, it is one of the highest temples in Tibet. It was built three thousand years ago and is one of the oldest and most important temples of Yungdrung Bon.
Natural scenery: Along the way, you can enjoy magnificent snow-capped mountains, vast grasslands and winding rivers, which is a paradise for photography enthusiasts.

IV. Precautions
1. Driving safety: Because some sections of the road are under construction or there are many bends, you need to be vigilant when driving, control the speed, and ensure driving safety.
2. Road condition information: It is recommended to check the latest road condition information before traveling to understand the construction and maintenance situation in order to plan the trip reasonably.
3. Altitude reaction: The altitude of Qamdo City is high (about 3257 meters). When you first arrive in the plateau area, you need to pay attention to prevent altitude reaction, take proper rest and replenish water.

V. Summary
The section of National Highway 317 from Dingqing County to Qamdo City is a self-driving route full of challenges and beautiful scenery. Along the way, there are not only magnificent natural scenery and unique cultural landscapes, but also the fun of self-driving on the plateau. However, it should be noted that the road conditions are complex and changeable, and you need to be fully prepared to ensure driving safety.

This is one of my favorite places on the Tibetan Plateau!

Watch this video to find out why this wild land is one of my favorite places I have ever been on the Tibetan Plateau!

See more on travel to this wild region:

Get ready for a bumpy ride! Almost all of the roads outside of Nangchen town are dirt and are still quite rugged. Driving even 30km here may take 3 hours on these untamed backroads that meander along the Mekong River.

But a little bit of whiplash is a small price to pay for the grandeur of these mountains that once protected the epic Kingdom of Nangchen. After centuries of remote isolation, Nangchen still sees very few tourists and those who make it out there are either really lost or don’t mind driving 15 hours from the province’s capital for some of the most beautiful and wild terrain in all of the Tibetan Plateau.

Introduction to Nangchen

Nangqên County is a place that is as diverse as the many spellings of its name. This place, known both as Nangchen (Tibetan: ནང་ཆེན་རྫོང་།) and as Nangqian County (simplified Chinese: 囊谦县; pinyin: Nángqiān Xiàn), is a county of the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture and is the southernmost county-level division of Qinghai Province in western China.

Nangchen famously borders the Tibet Autonomous Region to the south and many parts of Nangqian County are only a 30km drive from this border, neighboring the Tibetan Chamdo district. But don’t get too excited. Foreigners would need a very special permission to cross this particular border so most travelers will have to be content to stay in Qinghai Province. But if you don’t mind the bumpy roads and burly terrain, travelers will find they could spend at least 1-2 weeks in this region with no problem. And, unlike the Tibetan Autonomous Region, you do not need any special permits to travel here. Making this land a wonderland for adventurers and free spirits alike.

The county seat is called Xangda (Chinese: 香达镇), and lies in a fertile high altitude valley on the right bank of the Dza Chu (a branch of the upper reaches of the Mekong River). Today the total population of Xangda (also called Nangchen town) sits right around 60,415, and 98% of this population are ethnically Tibetan.

Geographically, Nangqian County is one of the least inhabited regions of the Tibetan Plateau with a small population spread across a total surface area of 11,539 km2 (4,455 sq mi). Today Nangchen, like many Tibetan towns, is growing and developing quickly as new hotels and paved roads replace the old dirty guesthouses and the potholed, bumpy dirt roads that mark this as a western outpost of civilization before one reaches the border of the Tibet Autonomous Region or TAR. But for now this is still a pretty remote town that is largely isolated by giant mountains and gaping rivers. Nangchen is definitely not a luxury destination, so don’t expect more than a few 3 star hotels.

But do expect to be absolutely amazed by the grandiose scenery and lots of wildlife. As home to Himalayan Golden Monkeys, Blue Sheep, Wild Ass, and Tibetan Antelope, Nangchen is a nature lover’s paradise. There are no hotels outside Nangchen town so be prepared to travel with a local guide and stay in very simple home stays or tent stays (we are happy to help you arrange these if you need some local contacts). Outside of the town, all the roads are mostly dirt and there is very little in the way of running water, flush toilets, or good internet. But this is a great chance to get away from all the noise and electronic buzzing to really engage local Tibetan nomadic life and learn to live like yak herder in the mountains.

For having such a relatively sparse nomadic population the Nangchen area has one of the largest ratios of monasteries to people. The second thing you will notice about driving outside of Nangchen town (after you experience the jaw dropping cliffs and steep granite spires) will probably be that you are in the middle of nowhere (often with no electricity and running water) and yet every 5-10km is a giant Tibetan Buddhist monastery. This is a spiritually devout land whose origins and culture run as pure and deep as it’s expansive gorges.
