This Is What Heaven Is Made Of Qazigund to Srinagar-J&K | (72.3 km) via NH 44 |
Qazigund known as the Gateway of Kashmir, is a town and a notified area committee in Anantnag district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Qazigund is located at 33.59°N 75.16°E. It has an average elevation of 1670 m (5478 feet) above mean sea level .
As of 2011 India census, Qazigund had a population of 9871. Males constitute 55% of the population and females 45%. Qazigund has an average literacy rate of 70.21%, higher than the national average of 67.16%, male literacy is 79.82%, and female literacy is 58.27%. In Qazigund, 20.67% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Qazigund has always been known for religious tolerances. Amongst Hindus, Pushker Nath Raina, of Chowgam, was a highly respected person and a great thinker and philosopher, who ensured communal harmony all the time. Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs reside peacefully in Qazigund from centuries. Qazigund is surrounded by springs known as Nags in local language. Verinag source of river Jehlum is only 10 km from Qazigund. Panzath Nag is just 3 km from Qazigund and famous Kound Nag is around 7–10 km from Qazigund.

Verinag (/ˈveɪriːnɑːɡ/) is a town named after and famous for the Verinag spring and Mughal garden, near Anantnag city in the Anantnag district of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is a notified area committee with tehsil status (Shahabad Bala Verinag) and is about 26 kilometers away from Anantnag and approximately 78 kilometres south-east from Srinagar which is the summer capital of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Verinag is also the first tourist spot of Kashmir Valley when travelling by road from Jammu, the winter capital of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir towards Srinagar. There is an octagonal stone basin at Verinag Spring and an arcade surrounding it which were built by Mughal emperor Jahangir in 1620 A.D. Later, a beautiful garden next to this spring, was laid out by his son Shah Jahan. This spring is known to never dry up or overflow. Verinag Spring is also the major source of river Jhelum. Verinag Spring and Mughal Arcade surrounding it is officially recognized by Archaeological Survey of India as a Monument of National Importance.[4]

Budget Trip To Srinagar By Train | Banihal to Baramulla train | Qazigund Tunnel
Here Budget Trip to Srinagar by Train has been depicted. This (DEMU) train, local train of Kashmir, actually runs from Banihal to Baramulla.
In fact, this video is the continuation of previous video How to Reach Kashmir from Kolkata via Jammu Tawai Railway Station. It was a Kashmir trip in October organized by Migrant Wings. After reaching Jammu, we decided to go Srinagar by road viz Jammu to Srinagar by bus on Jammu - Srinagar highway. First we reached at Banihal, and then went to Srinagar by a local train.
Train journey was a mesmerizing experience…we saw plenty of paddy fields in Kashmir for the first time and geographical diversity thereon.
The train passes through Banihal –Qazigund Tunnel—almost 9km long. The train takes a long time to cross it. We reached at Srinagar after 2 hours from Banihal. We chose both transport mode Bus and Train to reach Dal Lake for witnessing a different experience. We also felt mehmannawaji of a Kashmiri person named Md Taskeen Wani, who helped us a lot.

Banihal Qazigund Road Tunnel is an 8.5 km (5.3 mi) road tunnel at elevation of 1,790 m (5,870 ft) in the Pir Panjal range in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir connecting Banihal and Qazigund. The tunnel will reduce the distance between Srinagar and Jammu by 16 km.
It is a double tube tunnel consisting of two parallel tunnels - one for each direction of travel. Each tunnel is 7 m (23 ft) wide and has two lanes of road. The two tunnels are interconnected by a passage every 500 m (1,600 ft) for maintenance and emergency evacuation. The tunnel will have forced ventilation for extracting smoke and stale air and infusing fresh air. It will have state of the art monitoring and control systems for security. It is expected that vehicles will have to pay a toll to use the tunnel.
Construction of this tunnel started in 2011 along with the project to widen NH 44 (which was known as NH 1A before all the national highways were renumbered in the year 2010) to four lanes. The existing road tunnel below the Banihal pass (Jawahar tunnel), has been a bottleneck on the road due to its elevation of 2,194 m (7,198 ft) and limited traffic capacity. The new tunnel's average elevation at 1,790 m is 400 m lower than the existing Jawahar tunnel's elevation, which would make it less prone to avalanches. When completed, the tunnel would reduce the road distance between Banihal and Qazigund by 16 km (10 mile).
