Valley of the Witch. Seen at Tondu, Pyle, Neath, Onllwyn, Tonna and Resolven

Saturday, March 10th 2018 sees me setting off for my first clips at Tondu on the line from Bridgend to Maesteg with 66230/150. Already other photographers are in the car park and claiming their position on the footbridge; it's going to be busy today! I stop off near Pyle to catch the tour on the way down to Briton Ferry and Neath, my next 2 stops From Neath a drive to Onllwyn where the tour stops short of the washery. The river crossing at Tonna followed by the run up to Cwmgwrach is the final part of my day. Almost 90 miles covered but all worthwhile

Walks In Wales - South Cornelly (Medieval Villages And Very Big Holes)

A circular walk of South Cornelly near Porthcawl. This was the site of the original village simply called Cornelly.

South Cornelly is only a couple of miles from the centre of Porthcawl and you now bypass the village as you drive from Junction 37 of the M4 to Porthcawl.

It is thought that the village is named after St Cornelius and back in the 12th century the village had a church dedicated to the saint.

From the centre of Cornelly, I head up Lamb Row and across the old Dyffryn Llynfi & Porthcawl Railway route. This brought down coal and iron to Porthcawl docks and took limestone from the local quarries back to the ironworks.

The walk then takes you past the South Cornelly quarries which are still being operated today.

From the quarries, the walk passes across some fields to Heol Y Sheet. This was the route of a Roman Road across South Wales and there has been several Roman finds around Kenfig.

Heol Y Sheet is now a quiet country lane and the M4 motorway cuts through it.

Finally, the circular walk follows Heol Y Sheet to Cornelly Cross and then under the M4 back to South Cornelly.

Embracing the Elements - A Wet and Wild Walk Over Kenfig Dunes, Wales

It’s winter in Wales which means one thing - It’s Wet And Windy! The stormy weather isn’t going to stop me. So it’s time for a walk over Kenfig Dunes near Porthcawl.

The Kenfig Nature Reserve is close to the town of Porthcawl and is a great place to visit even in this weather. Just make sure you wear your waterproof clothes.

The wet and windy weather in the forecast wasn’t that bad on the day and the rain was slightly less than the expected 50mph winds.

It’s not a long walk and there are quite a few paths to choose which is useful when many of the paths are flooded.

A Walk Through Industrial South Wales - Where to WALK IN WALES (Cefn Cribwr To Parc Slip)

A walk back in time from the old ironworks at Bedford Park, Cefn Cribwr to Parc Slip Nature Reserve.
On the way, we discover some of the history of industrial South Wales and its link with iron, coal and trains.

This walk in Wales has a personal connection for me as my grandfather worked on the railways in this area.

The start is at Bedford Park, Cefn Cribwr, South Wales which was an ironworks dating back to the 1770s. Then it’s down the tracks to the old Cefn Junction Signal Box, past the remains of Cefn Clip Colliery and then on to Parc Slip Nature Reserve.

The nature reserve had been a coalfield for hundreds of years up until the closure of the open cast mine in the 1980s.

Parc Slip was also the location of a major mine disaster which took place in August 1892 when a faulty Davy lamp caused an explosion which killed 112 men.

As you walk through the beautiful South Wales countryside and nature reserves its hard to imagine what the Victorian industrial landscape was like with all the smoke, dust and noise.

Kilgetty Station 10/5/22

Kilgetty Station is located on the line between Carmarthen and Pembroke Dock; the station is operated by Transport For Wales.

The station roughly sees a train towards Pembroke Dock every two hours; in the other direction these services head towards Carmarthen and beyond running up to every two hours.

Most services on the line are operated mainly using Class 150's and Class 153's which are all set to be replaced by brand new Class 197's from the end of 2022.
