We are spending the day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and finding all the groundhog fun there is to be have in this small town. There are so many must do's here all year round. Punxsutawney is known globally for their annual Groundhog Day celebration, that happens every February 2nd. We are visiting in the Spring and we are here for all the Must See Groundhog fun! We made a top 5 list of the Best of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
5. Punxy Phils- Not to be mistaken for the diner in the classic movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray. Groundhog Day was actually not filmed in Punxsutawney it was filmed in Woodstock, Illinois. Punxy Phil's is a family restaurant that is all about the groundhog. They sell groundhog souvenirs up front and have big Groundhog Day murals. The food is also great. They serve breakfast all day, diner classics, hearty portions at reasonable prices.
4. Gobbler's Knob is next on the list. This is where the celebration of Groundhogs Day takes place on February 2nd. Gobblers Knob was a great place for my kids to run around and to play up onstage of the Groundhog stage and take photo opps with Phil's famous burrow. And just steps away is the Gobbler's Knob and Groundhog Day visitors Center where you can learn how the holiday came to be and how the film Groundhog Dog catapulted the popularity of the annual holiday.
3. Open Arms Farmacy is a small town candy shop that specializes in freeze dried candy. This process takes all the water and moisture out of the candy and changing the texture and leaving the sugar crystals and intensifying the flavor.
2. Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center. Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is home of the world-famous furry weather forecaster, but it's also known as the Weather Capital of the World. The Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center is inside the old post office. inside there are hands on exhibits about weather science and weather folklore. My kids favorite was digging into the interactive topography map and the tornado slide.
1. Top of the list is strolling around town, looking for giant groundhogs. The large fiberglass groundhogs are designed and painted by artists. There are over 30 of these adorable guys around Punxsutawney. The #1 Groundhog to find while here is the famous groundhog himself the seer of seers, prognosticator of prognosticators ...Phil. Phil lives at the Punxsutawney Library 364 days a year with his wife.
It is clear how much this holiday and Phil the groundhog means to this community.
