Heavy rain lashes Chittoor

Heavy rains due to cyclone Raonu in Chittoor district led to the death of seven persons in the last three days, while severe damage was caused to roads and horticulture orchards.

District revenue officer (DRO) L. Vijay Chander told the press on Thursday that the rain-related casualties included two each in Somala, Kalakada and Yerpedu and one each in Nagari and Gudipala. He said ex-gratia payments of Rs 4 lakh to the family of each victim has been released.

He said ten mandals -- Mulakalacheruvu, Gurramkonda, Tirupati rural, Kalikiri, Madanapalle, Punganur, Somala, Penumuru, Peddapanjani and Ramakuppam – have received surplus rainfall, while the rest of the mandals registered copious rain. B.N. Kandriga mandal received 39 cm, followed by 29 cm in K.V.B. Puram. Some 300 families were rehabilitated from low-lying areas in mandals in the eastern part of the district.

The DRO said the cyclone damaged 33.5 km of roads maintained by the Roads & Buildings Department; and 60 km kept by the Panchayat Raj Department. As many as 88 electric poles were uprooted; and 123 power transformers, low-tension and high-tension cables were damaged.

The rain damaged tomato and potato patches in 350 hectares apart from banana and papaya.

As many as 128 houses were destroyed in the district, mostly in Chittoor revenue division. About 515 houses were partially damaged.
