Kollam | Top 5 Tourist Places in Kollam District | Kollam Travel Guide | Kerala | MeeAnveshi

Kollam, formerly known as Quilon, is a district located in the southern region of Kerala, situated 70 km north of the state's capital, Thiruvananthapuram. It is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west, Tamil Nadu to the east, Alapuzha and Pathanamthitta districts to the north, and Thiruvananthapuram district to the south. With a population of over 2.6 million, Kollam is one of the more densely populated districts in India. The district's capital is Kollam City, which serves as the headquarters for the district administration. Administratively, the district is divided into two revenue divisions, namely Kollam and Punalur, each with three taluks under them.

Similar to the rest of Kerala, Kollam experiences a temperate climate with generally sunny weather peaking in heat during April-May. The monsoon season falls from June to September. The soil in Kollam varies from loamy to laterite and forest in the coastal regions, mainland, and forest areas, respectively.

The heartland of Kollam is naturally veined by the Ashtamudi Lake, a massive, multi-branched water body that is also a popular boating attraction for tourists. This, along with the Kollam canal cutting through the city, gives Kollam a prominent place in the waterway systems of the country. The vast expanse of the lake is beautifully spotted with a number of islands of varying sizes. The city is also graced by beaches where people go to spend quiet evenings. Kollam has a considerably large forest cover on its eastern side, making it home to several eco-tourism projects such as Shenduruni, Thenmala, Palaruvi, etc.

Kollam City prides itself on its extensive history of political, commercial, and cultural significance, as evidenced by numerous accounts from ancient travelers. With a diverse colonial past under the Portuguese, Dutch, and British, Kollam is home to several historically significant sites such as the Thangasseri lighthouse, the St. Thomas Fort and cemetery constructed by the Portuguese, Thevally Palace, and Cheenakkottaram. Additionally, the city boasts numerous old buildings, constructed in various architectural styles by the Travancore kings, who ruled the region prior to India's independence. Many government offices still operate within these structures.

Since the 16th century, Kollam has served as the hub of the cashew industry in Kerala. With hundreds of operational cashew factories in the district, Kollam remains the largest exporter of processed cashews in India. The presence of Neendakara and Thangasseri, two fishing harbors and ports in Kollam, has fostered a thriving marine industry that provides ample employment and livelihood opportunities for a significant number of individuals.

Punalur Suspension Bridge | Historical Attraction | Places to Visit in Kollam

The Punalur Suspension Bridge, located in Punalur is the oldest motorable Bridge in Kerala, which was built by Travancore Government and is now a historical attraction. The bridge has a length of 400 feet (120 m). The suspension bridge was built to prevent wild animals from crossing into the town from the forest area of old Kattupathanapuram.

History and Construction

arch and column of the bridge with the emblem of Travancore

The Punalur Suspension Bridge is the first motorable bridge in South India. The suspension bridge crossing the river is the only suspended-deck type in south India. Built in 1877 by Albert Henry across the Kallada River, this huge bridge was suspended by two spans and was used for vehicular movement. Construction took more than six years. It is said that after completion of the bridge people hesitated to walk over the bridge. In order to prove the strength of the bridge the engineer and his family passed under the bridge in a country boat while six elephants were walking over it. Now the bridge is of historical interest and is a major tourist attraction.

Reason for the construction

A view of the suspension bridge before renovation
The main concept behind the construction of this bridge was that areas on the other side of the river Kallada was dense forests. A bridge was necessary. It was also built to prevent wild animals from getting to the populated side, a bridge which shakes when some one gets on it was built, this shaking scared off the animals and they wouldn't cross the bridge.

Method of Construction
The bridge is connected to four wells. The iron rods of the bridge is connected to the clips, situated in the wells. Each well is about 100 feet deep and no one since knows the engineering behind the construction of this bridge. It still remains a mystery.

Replacement for the suspension bridge
A new concrete bridge was built near to the Punalur Suspension Bridge in 1972 due to heavy traffic on the National Highway 208, a new strong bridge was built.

Renovation

A full view of the renovated Punalur Suspension Bridge
The bridge was recently repaired and renovated by the government of Kerala. The structure was strengthened, new wood panels of the same tree (Kambakom) which was first used in the construction were fit, the steel armrests and the stone columns were painted, night lamps were installed and a new park and resting place were made near the bridge.
