Castle complex of Counts Plāters – an architectural monument of the 18th century.
Construction of the complex of the central building began around 1765 after the project of architect A. Parako. Paintings of the interior of the castle walls are the most outstanding monument of Latgale’s secular architecture of the 18th century. In addition to the castle, farm buildings were built: palace housekeeper and gardener houses, stable, orangery. Around the castle was created approximately 22 ha large park. Its dendrological composition in nowadays is very wide – around 70 different species of trees and shrubs. The park has a restored cave with a mysterious “underground passage” and a guard of the castle – a lion.
Krāslava History and Art Museum is located in one of the buildings of the complex. From the observation deck at the castle, you can enjoy beautiful views of the Daugava river and the city.

Abandoned city in Latvia | Pamesta pilsēta Latvijā, Irbene 2023
Irbene is an abandoned army town near Ventspils.
In Soviet times, employees of the space research station Zvezda lived here. The town had its own culture house, school and post office.
In the 1990s, the employees of the Soviet station left the city, and the station became the property of the Engineering Institute of the Ventspils University.
The city itself is completely deserted. Here you can walk through empty school classrooms, look into apartments where Soviet officers once lived.
If you like the atmosphere of abandoned places, we recommend entering Irbene on the way to Ventspils or to the Ventspils radio telescope.

Low pass Priekule airfield [5626N02135E] RWY 12

Manor Complex, located in ???????? Priekule, Latvia
The complex consists of the Swedish Gate, Priekule Manor building and the manor viewing tower. Korff barons ruled in Priekule since the 15th century. At that time the manor itself and the manor fortifications were built to defend against pillagers.
The drive-through Swedish Gate was built in 1688 and its central part was decorated with the Korff Family coat-of-arms, silver bullet and maskaron carved in Gotland sandstone. Two threatening stone guards stood in the niches built in both sides of the passageway of Priekule manor gate. There was a belief before World War II – those kissing the gate guard’s bellybutton will be happy in the future. Today the Swedish Gate is guarded by wooden soldiers made by a local craftsman, but the belief about kissing the bellybutton still exists.
Priekule manor was built in the 18th century and experienced extensive reconstruction in the second half of 19th century supervised by the famous architect Paul Max Berchi; parade stairs, second floor hall exit-balcony and the manor viewing tower were built within the reconstruction.
In 2014, during the Fest of Icarus, “The Genealogy tree of barons von Korff 15th–20th century” was opened in the gateway of the Swedish Gates.
Today the manor is the home of Priekule Secondary School.

In Priekules Region you will meet many warm-hearted and creative people, who still honor Ikars of Priekule, a manor blacksmith, who by landing from the church tower with his self-made wings proved to the world that a man can fly like birds. The legend about Ikars of Priekule is still alive today, it is reflected in the emblem of the region, and in honor of this legend each year on the second Saturday of August we are celebrating the biggest festival in the region. We suggest you to begin your journey across the Priekule Region from Priekule, the Swedish gate Zviedru vārti a very symbolic place where seven roads have crossed since ancient times. In the renovated Lutheran church you can get to know the history of Priekule, listen to the sounds of the organ and see Priekule's surroundings through the windows of the church tower. In Priekule Parish, we encourage you to commemorate World War II by visiting the Memorial of Warrior's Cemetery and reading the death-rolls of killed soldiers. But from the viewpoints of the nature reserve park in Ruņupe valley you can find similarities with the most beautiful places in Latvia.
