Praia da Vitória (Portuguese pronunciation: [pɾajɐ ðɐ vitɔɾiɐ]), translated as the Beach of the Victory, is a municipality in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. With a population of 21,035 (in 2011), the second largest administrative authority on the island of Terceira, it covers an area of 161.27 square kilometers (62.27 sq mi), that extends from the northern coast halfway into the interior.

The Biscoitos natural pools are a group of Portuguese marine geological formations located in the parish of Biscoitos, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, Terceira Island, Azores, and owe their origin to the ancient volcanic eruptions that also formed the fields of those that grow the vineyards of the wine Verdelho. These natural pools are used as a bathing area.

I returned to Terceira not by choice, but because of a flight connection, which gave me the perfect opportunity to visit the island's second-largest town of Praia da Vitória, just a few kilometers east of the airport.
Here, I enjoyed a great afternoon walking along its majestic curved beach and poking around it's minute Cidade Velha (Old Town), featuring two candy-colored, whitewashed churches and some incredible cobblestone pedestrian streets.
If you're looking for a low-key, tourist-free place to base yourself on Terceira Island, this is a good option compared to the hustle of Angra do Heroismo.

Atlantida Mar is a contemporary hotel featuring designer guest rooms with panoramic views. It is on Terceira Island, with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean Promenade and has a health spa.

Praia da Vitória town boasts two notable churches, several public squares, and a number of hotels and restaurants. It edges up against a low mountain ridge called Facho (Portuguese for Torch, because in its top a primitive lighthouse and lookout place against pirates, and later a marine and military semaphoric signal station, operated for about 400 years), and a large public park atop the ridge affords excellent views of the surrounding countryside and the Atlantic Ocean.

Here are excerpts of a description of Praia da Vitória:
Historic Praia da Vitória was founded around 1456 as Vila da Praia, it received its present name from Queen Maria II in 1837 in grateful remembrance of the first victory of the Liberals over the Royalists on the 11th of August 1829 in a battle, which took place off the town’s shores. Seat of the first captain-donees of the island, Praia served as capital until it was superseded by Angra do Heroísmo in 1476. Praia da Vitória now constitutes Terceira’s most important seaport. The north quay accommodates the local fishing fleet while the south quay is occupied by the commercial harbour, with big container ships mooring here. The most impressive of all is probably the all-dominating Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz, an attractive parish church with a large façade with two imposing bell-towers that can be seen from far. Founded in the middle of the 15th century by the first captain-donee of the island, this three-naved church was only consecrated in 1516 and over the centuries of its existence, it was damaged several times by earthquakes and restored again. Praia da Vitória was badly damaged by several earthquakes (1614, 1841 and 1980). South of the Matriz stands the noteworthy Paços do Concelho (Town Hall) at the main square Largo Francisco Ornelas da Câmara, which is adorned with the Estatua da Liberdada, a monument in memory of the heroes of the battle of 11th August 1829. The town hall was originally founded in 1591 and shows the typical architectural of north Portuguese manor houses, featuring an impressive double-staircase in the middle of its façade, which is flanked by a massive bell-tower on one side. Praia da Vitória is also the birthplace of the town’s most famous son, the novelist, poet, journalist and teacher Vitorino Nemésio (1901-1978).

Praia da Viola is located on the northern shore of Sao Miguel, in Lomba de Maia. It is possible to go down with a car only until a parking lot. From there, you need to walk down to the beach, it's around 200m down the cliff. The road to walk down is good, we did it in flip-flops. It's a nice, clam beach and this the road, which leads down to the beach.
