Facts
Ireland is known for its wide expanses of lush, green fields. In fact, its nickname is the Emerald Isle.
But there are also large areas of rugged, rocky landscape. About 15,000 years ago,
Ireland was completely covered by thick glaciers.
The movement of these giant sheets of ice stripped the soil,
leaving huge tracts of flat, limestone pavement.

PEOPLE & CULTURE
Ireland is a nation of storytellers.
The tradition dates back to Celtic bards,
who would record and recite the country's history.
Many famed writers come from Ireland, including four winners of the Nobel Prize for literature.
The Irish also excel in music and sports.

NATURE
The Irish have a great affection for nature and rural life.
The country's first coins even featured pictures of animals.
Low levels of development and pollution in Ireland have left most of the nation's open spaces relatively undisturbed.
Did you know that there are no wild snakes in Ireland?
The sea has stopped many animals common on mainland Europe from reaching the island.
There are also only two wild mouse species, one type of lizard, and just three kinds of amphibians.
Irish wildlife is protected by government conservation programs.
To preserve natural habitat,
the government has established six national parks and hundreds of national heritage areas throughout the country.

Abbeyleix Bog Walk - County Laois Ireland

Located just south of Abbeyleix in County Laois, Ireland, the Abbeyleix Bog Walk encompasses approximately 500 acres of diverse habitats including raised bog, lagg, cutaway, wet carr woodland, and meadows.

Abbeyleix Bog is a Raised Bog typical of lowland areas of the midlands of Ireland. The bog developed over thousands of years since Ireland's last Ice Age. Following the retreat of the glaciers about 10,000 years ago, a lake would have been found in this area.

The climate became warmer and wetter and this lake filled in with vegetation and the alkaline conditions gradually became more acidic as the vegetation built up and the bog mosses (Sphagnum species) colonized and began to dominate the site.

The acidic conditions helped the formation of peat as the plant decay process was slowed down. This peat formation continued up until the last century with overall peat depths recorded up to 6 meters.

The old Portlaoise-Kilkenny railway line was built through the bog in 19th century and local people cut turf for fuel from around the bog. The bog was then taken over from the de Vesci Estate by Bord na Móna. This partially drained bog led to the drying out process which resulted in the decline of the peat-forming bog mosses.

Bord na Móna and the National Parks and Wildlife Service of the Department of Environment, Arts and Heritage set about reversing the effects of drainage and restoring Abbeyleix Bog by blocking field drains in an intensive pattern to re-wet the bog. The drain-blocking has proved very successful and a 2009 study found that the all-important bog mosses are returning.

Mulțumesc!

Garryhinch (Forest recreation area) Co.Offaly

Garryhinch Forest recreation area Co.Offaly. Garryhinch is about 6.5 km west of Portarlington on the R423 to Mountmellick

The wood has 2 looped walks which can cater for both the casual stroller or the nature walker, all these trails are waymarked and both start and end in the car park. The Garryhinch Loop (3.2kms, 45mins, easy) is a nice walk around the forest taking in the various tree species found in the forest; The Barrow Walk (3.8kms, 45mins, easy) crossing a stone arch bridge and floow2ing a section of the Barrow this is a lovely walk.

Ballyhaunis - County Mayo - Driving Downtown [ 4K ] #AjsAdventures #travel #ireland #mayo

Ballyhaunis is the first town you come to in County Mayo as you travel west. It is a busy town, situated amidst a patchwork of green fields, lakes, wild bog and beautiful country lanes. Centrally positioned in the heart of Connaught and only 10km from Knock Marian Shrine and 25km from Ireland West Airport Knock.

Located on the intersection of the N60 and N83, Ballyhaunis has good transport links with daily bus connections to the four provinces and it is also served by the Dublin/Westport Irish Rail link.

Escaping to the Lakes of Killarney

Escaping to the Lakes of Killarney during the COVID-19 Pandemic. A beautiful place. The perfect place to hear your head and get away from it all. County Kerry, in the peninsular southwest region of Ireland, is known for its pockets of Irish-language speakers and striking terrain. Passing rugged coastline and mountains, the Ring of Kerry is a popular scenic driving route skirting the edges of the Iveragh Peninsula. Within Killarney National Park’s 10,000-hectare limits are trails through forests, moorland and landmarks like Torc Waterfall and Torc Mountain.
