Welcome to Pompton lake, a man-made lake nestled between the townships of Oakland and Wayne. The borough of Pompton Lakes was based around the Pompton Iron Works, German Artistic Weaving Company, and then later the DuPont Company. From 1800 to the early 1900s Pompton Lakes was served by the New York and Susquehanna Railroad at the Pompton Junction, bringing business, industry, and at one point tourism to the borough.
Before America was Founded, before the Dutch even came to settle these lands, the Ramapo River was home to various native tribes. The Lenne Lenape, Munsee, Ramapo, and the Pompton People have all lived in this region. Speaking two different dialects Munsee and Unami, the tribes often met, traded, or clashed throughout the ages.
The largest grouping is the Lenne Lenape, which fell into 3 different groups, each following a different totem animal. The people, on whose land I am currently on, were of the turtle. Northwest of here where the people of the Wolf and along the coast was the turkey. In addition to the totemic animal, The Lenape worships the Sun, Fire, and the Four Winds. The four winds were the bringers of rain and sunshine and rulers of the weather, while the fire was considered the Grandfather of all Indian nations.
Did you know that The missionaries often referred to the native priests as medicine men? These men were not only healers but also oracles.
Fun Fact the Lenne Lenape had a Piece time and Wartime chief, shifting the power when the situation arises. Both of which were separate from the so-called Medicine Men
Let's talk a bit about the legends. Originally passed down verbally then painted as pictographs, one of the most famous of the Lenne Lenape tales is that told in The Walam Olum. *
It was believed that in the beginning there were two forces, one good and one bad. The good one created the turtle, and out of the turtles' shell grew a massive tree which sprouted the first people. The evil one created the snake. The snake brought sickness, droughts, and hated the people, so he flooded the land forcing them to retreat into canoes. The people sailed until they found a small dry spot on the back of the great turtle. Eventually, the waters calmed, dried up, and receded, and as it did the turtle shell exposed more land and vegetation started to grow, giving the people a new home and starting the legend that the world rests on the back of a turtle.

Lake Kinnelon and the tale of Smoke Rise New Jersey

FUN FACT: Did you know Smoke Rise is one of the oldest, private, gated communities in the United States?
This unique name was given by the indigenous people because of the way the fog rose from Lake Kinnelon which seemed to turn into smoke. The smoke they were referring to is the mist that rises from the lake at sunset.
It is said that Francis Kinney loved his wife so much that he built her a chapel close to home so she wouldn't have to travel 7 miles to the nearest church. The name given to the medieval style chapel is St. Hubert’s Chapel and it’s only accessible by boat because it sits on Chapel island in Lake Kinnelon. Francis Kinney hired Tiffany Glass Company to design and create the majestic ecclesiastical stained glass found in St. Hubert’s chapel.
This land and wealth was inherited by Francis Kinney’s son Morris, whom the town was later named after. Morris lived most of his life on the estate at Smoke Rise and upon his death in 1945, Smoke Rise was willed to his lifelong friend John Talbot Sr.
John Talbot Sr, was a real estate developer in NY, patron of the arts and was credited for his role in the revival of ballet in the 1930s. He lived at Smoke Rise in a beautiful English Manor overlooking Lake Kinnelon.
John Dalton was responsible for The Smoke Rise Club, an exclusive, private lake club as well as Smoke Rise Tennis Club and Smoke Rise Riding Club where you can ride your horse right in town.
At Smoke Rise there is Village Green, which hosts soccer, basketball and tennis games. There are numerous activities you can do at Lake Kinnelon in Smoke Rise. Some include relaxing at the beach, playing a game of volleyball, basketball or perhaps a game at the horseshoe pits. There are also docks for boats and storage areas for kayaks and canoes.
It is said that each house looks different and unique from each other. However, an indigenous pink puddingstone is used freely in construction.

Lake Tappan and The Best Hikes in New Jersey
On today’s episode we’re heading to Bergen county to explore not 1 but 2 reservoirs. The Oradell and The Old Tappan reservoirs...But they’re more than just reservoirs that house bodies of water for drinking; there are other activities you can do. Come with me and let’s check out what else we can do at these Reservoirs.
Construction of the Oradell Reservoir Dam began in 1901 and took 22 years to complete. It started with dredging a mill pond on the Hackensack River in Bergen County. Later this was replaced by a timber-crib dam, where they stacked heavy timber that resembled a log house and filled in the spaces with earth or rubble. Finally, a high concrete reservoir dam was built to replace the previous dam. This was done to increase its size and water capacity.
The Oradell Reservoir Dam and Old Tappan Reservoir are managed by Suez North America, a water company that provides approximately 750,000 residents of Bergen and Hudson counties with drinking water.
This reservoir borders neighboring towns of Haworth, Emerson, Closter and Harrington Park.
So, what are some things we can do at these Reservoirs?
Since the dams are managed by Suez North America, they’ve created a program that provides the public access to the watershed property for a nominal fee.
There are also hiking trails that have been cleared, marked and mapped with the assistance of the NYNJ Trail Conference. These trails have been enhanced with kiosks installed with information about the fish, wildlife and birds that you’ll find in the watershed area.
One of the most popular activities done at the reservoir is fishing. The water body is a fishing hot-spot for fishermen because it is home to a variety of fishes. These include: largemouth bass, smallmouth bass,carp,yellow perch, white perch, sunfish and catfish.
Our second reservoir is Old Tappan Reservoir or Lake Tappan. It was also built on the Hackensack River between New York and New Jersey.
Along these trails you might find a few bird watchers. Most commonly seen birds are American robin, Mallard, blue jay and cardinal. But some other notable birds seen are bald eagle, American goldfinch, red-tailed hawk and more.
FUN FACT: In 1967, this dam was built by flooding an area including a civil airstrip.
So this reservoir is relatively new compared to Oradell Reservoir Dam. Lake Tappan is higher up the Hackensack River and it feeds into the Oradell Reservoir which in turn provides water to the residents of Bergen and Hudson counties.

Riverdale, a vibrant town located in Morris County is a community of crossroads that connect major highway systems in Northern New Jersey. It has always been a place of distinct importance because it is a junction with roads leading to Morristown, Charlottleburg, Ringwood, and Hackensack.
Fun Fact: It was later discovered that these roads closely followed the Indian trails, which always followed the rivers.
Riverdale is also the meeting place of the Ramapo, Pequannock, and the Pompton rivers which was extremely important because that meant Pompton or Riverdale was a hub for commerce and trade.
Pompton or Riverdale was originally inhabited by the Pompton sub-tribe of the Munsee tribe who were part of the Leni- Lenape nation. The Pomptons lived in bark-covered houses along the Pompton River, which they named after their tribe. There in the rich river bed, they planted corn, squash, and beans; they also fished the Ramapo, Pequannock, and the Pompton rivers.
The first Europeans to explore this region was the Dutch prospectors in 1609; who were searching for rare minerals and precious metals. The Dutch also developed a rich trade of furs with the Pompton people.
In 1664, the British forces overtook the Dutch, which ended their rule but not their people from migrating here.
Fun Fact: Riverdale was named Pompton for 200 years before its name was changed, by the post office, in 1923 to prevent any confusion with Pompton Lakes, Pompton Plains, and Pompton Falls. Which would make 2023 Riverdales Centennial.
It is by no coincidence that Riverdale’s home to a giant quarry. According to research, New Jersey has 3 geologic bedrock zones. They are the Valley & Ridge province, the Highlands, and the Piedmont. Each of these zones has different bedrock compositions. Riverdale lies at the meeting point of the Piedmont and Highland areas, where the rocks mined and sold have been formed more than 500 million years ago. There is also a distinct observation that can be made to a casual observer; from the craggy hills of the Highlands to the rolling plains of the Piedmont. One can say that Interstate 287 separates these 2 rock formations, with the Highlands on the western part of Riverdale and the Piedmont on the eastern part of Riverdale
Fun Fact: Did you know that Pompton or Riverdale was once the site of an enormous shallow lake collecting sediments from the surrounding hills and mountains.
It is also confirmed by researchers that much of Riverdale’s landscape is influenced by the glaciers and sliding ice sheets. From the contour of the land to the waterways and soils.
One of the influential families in Riverdale is the Schuyler family. Arent Schuyler, a military officer in the French and Indian wars, traveled to Northwestern New Jersey to investigate a rumor that the French were attempting to get the Leni-Lenape tribe to incite a rebellion against the English. Turns out that wasn’t the case but instead found the land to be rich and fertile for growing crops. He then convinced a few wealthy English businessmen to purchase the land from the Leni-Lenape tribe; which they did for goods valued at 250 English pounds on November 11th, 1695. In 1726 the Schuyler-VanNess sawmill was built and soon after other businessmen started building sawmills and harnessing the power produced by the Pequannock River. One such investor was Peter Post who started a small industrial complex on Post Lane in 1736. It was said that he built several homes, a grist mill, tannery, sawmill, and a distillery. A few years later, a store and a stop on the stagecoach were added. A couple of the homes and the store that has been remodeled over the years still exist today. According to archives, approximately 28 or more mills were built, but sadly only 2 have survived over the years.
Fun Fact: Did you know that Slaters Mill, formerly Ford’s Mill, once processed beaver felt fur to make stetson hats?
Because Riverdale was a hub for commerce and trade, it also became an important part of the American Revolution. General Washington considered Pompton so vital that he ordered a fort to be built to guard the river crossing in 1777. This was the place where troops received necessary supplies for the war such as ammunition produced from the raw materials in the mines.

Pompton Lakes, NJ
Pompton Lakes is a borough in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 11,097, reflecting an increase of 457 (+4.3%) from the 10,640 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 101 (+1.0%) from the 10,539 counted in the 1990 Census.
Pompton Lakes was established on February 26, 1895 from portions of Pompton Township, based on the results of a referendum held three days earlier. The borough was named for the Pompton people, a sub-tribe of Native Americans who lived in the area. It was the first borough to be formed in Passaic County as part of the boroughitis that had struck the state at the time. Pompton Lakes did not acquire territory from more than one township, which would have entitled the borough to a seat on the County's Board of Chosen Freeholders.
An outer-ring suburb of New York City, Pompton Lakes is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Midtown Manhattan. From the higher mountains in and around the borough one can see the New York skyline. Three rivers, the Ramapo, Pequannock and Wanaque, run through the borough, which historically provided much of the energy for various industries in the borough. In the mid-20th Century, Pompton Lakes served as a local shopping destination, but lost its status as shopping malls opened in the area in the 1970s and 1980s.

It's October at Star Lake Camp and the leaves are starting to change. The fall foliage can quickly take you from the business of day to blissfully lost in the woods. We normally recommend having a reward when hiking with kids but this hike is reward of its own. You will also have stunning panoramas while kayaking any of it's three lakes. Parsippany Troy Hills, New Jersey, USA
Parsippany-Troy Hills, commonly referred to as Parsippany, is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The township was incorporated in 1928, merging the former townships of Parsippany and Troy Hills. Parsippany-Troy Hills is located approximately 30 miles west of New York City and offers a blend of suburban living and commercial activity.
The township is known for its diverse community, encompassing a range of residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and industrial parks. With its convenient location near major highways, including Interstate 80 and Interstate 287, Parsippany-Troy Hills has attracted numerous businesses, contributing to its economic growth and vitality.
In addition to its thriving business sector, Parsippany-Troy Hills offers a variety of recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. The township boasts numerous parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities, providing ample space for outdoor activities and sports. Skylands: Pompton Junction, A Brief History of the North Jersey Railways | 4KUHD
Back in the day, people used to refer to certain train routes by nicknames, such as the Twilight, the Phoebe Snow, or Westerner. Each route served from one city to another, often connecting with other routes at a Junction. One such junction is the Pompton Junction in Pompton Lakes.
Pompton Junction was the place where the New York & Greenwood Lake Railway and the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway intersected. These were both parts of the larger Erie Railroad.
Fun Fact: at one time, two competing Railroad Builders were racing to get to Pompton Junction first. They were the Montclair Railway and the Midland Railway, Midland Won, and traveled through Pompton Junction onward to Midvale while Montclair adjusted their route to Greenwood lake instead.
Along the rail line, The New York & Greenwood Lake Railway had stops for Wanaque-Midvale station, Monksville Reservoir, Hewitt, Greenwood Lakes, and Sterling Forest. Many of these towns owe their growth to the railroad, and Pompton Lakes is one example.
Prior to the railroad Pompton Lakes was known as the home of the Yellow Tavern, a famous revolutionary war-era tavern where General George Washington Met Robert Erskin, who later lived in Ringwood Manor and became a cartographer general in George Washington's army. It really wasn't until the Railroad opened in Pompton Junction in the late 1870s that Pompton Lakes really began to really grow.
Did you know that Pompton Lakes was once Home to some surprising famous people? Such as:
Lovell Lawrence Jr., (1915–1971) a Rocket Scientist, credited with breaking the sound barrier
And Joe Louis (May 13, 1914 – April 12, 1981) a boxer and a person of color Nicknamed the Brown Bomber, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time.
And Twiggy Ramirez (born 1971), bassist and guitarist for Marilyn Manson!
Did you know that: Pompton Junction served more than just leisurely commuters. The New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway is a freight train that was initially used as a way to connect industrial New Jersey to the ports on the Hudson Waterfront at Hoboken. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to see freight trains because the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway is still in operation and can still be seen hauling freight through Pompton Lakes.
Fun fact: the Susquehanna was Once known as the biggest little railroad in the country. The Railroad was formed from a merger of many smaller lines. The rail linked eastern Jersey City to various lines connecting NJ with PA and Upstate New York
By the early 1920s, there was a decline of passenger trains because people could afford their own personal vehicles or taking the bus. The passenger lines to Greenwood Lake were halted and Pompton Junction station fell into ruin. By 1941, the tower that once stood tall at the station burnt to the ground. All that's left are the tracks used by the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway.

Nectong, NJ - A Sunday Morning Walk On Main Street
A walk on a warm Sunday morning in May down Main Street in Netcong, a borough in Morris County, New Jersey. In this POV walking tour we’ll stroll through the downtown while listening to the ambient sounds of birds singing, cars traveling down the roadways, and water rushing over the waterfall dam.
We start at the corner of Main Street and Ledgewood Ave, across from Musconetcong Dam, then stroll up Main Street past homes and shops listening to the birds singing their early morning songs, stopping at the Netcong train station to look down the tracks. We continue our walk returning back on the other side of Main Street. We turn off Main St. to walk along part of Ledgewood Ave, past some more shops and business including the historic Palace Theater which is now home to The Growing Stage Children's Theatre of New Jersey, ending our morning trek across the street from Stanhope United Methodist Church with a beautiful view of Lake Musconetcong.
