The narrow-gauge train ride between Velingrad and Avramovo in beautiful Bulgaria feels like a step back in time.
Narrow-gauge trains are a rarity nowadays.
In mountainous places such as the Bulgarian highlands, the trails take numerous turns and go through countless tunnels. The narrow-gauge trains are the only means of transportation for hundreds of people.
The 760-mm-wide railway Septemvri – Velingrad – Dobrinishte is the last remaining of its kind in Bulgaria. Due to the terrain, the average speed of the trains is 40 km/h (25 mph). Hence, a distance of 125 km (78 mi) is traveled in about 5 hours.
The most spectacular part of the railway is between the train stations Velingrad and the small village Avramovo.
The tracks follow the curves of the Rhodope Mountains between mesmerizing hills, by green meadows, through pine tree forests, and numerous tunnels. The ride takes exactly one hour.
The last 9 km before Avramovo, the train passes through 16 tunnels and travels an 8-shaped serpentine. It then arrives at the highest train station on the Balkans, located at an altitude of 1,267 m (4,157 ft.) above sea level.
The line was constructed between the 1920s and the 1940s and it seems like time has stopped in the villages whose train stations you’ll pass. Some of the station buildings haven’t been renovated since their construction.
Passengers on the narrow-gauge train travel the distance between Velingrad and their home villages several times a week. There’s no other way for them to get the supplies for their everyday needs. Some of them also visit Velingrad to sell their own produce: milk, honey, jams, cheese, and souvenirs.
While we were simply riding the train as entertainment and to admire the mesmerizing views from the window, for these people the narrow-gauge train is part of their sustenance.

Bulgaria covers an area of approximately 110,993 square kilometers, making it a relatively compact country.
The Danube River, one of Europe's major rivers, forms the northern border of Bulgaria.
The country is also blessed with numerous lakes, with the stunning Rila Lakes being a highlight for nature enthusiasts.
The Bulgarian coastline along the Black Sea is renowned for its beautiful beaches.
Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are popular destinations, offering golden sands, clear waters, and a vibrant nightlife.
Bulgaria is home to the Balkan Mountain Range, and its highest peak, Musala, stands proudly at 2,925 meters.
The Rila and Pirin Mountains are also notable for their breathtaking landscapes and hiking trails.
Apart from Sofia, other charming towns worth exploring include Plovdiv, known for its well-preserved Roman amphitheater, and Veliko Tarnovo, a historic town with a medieval fortress.
Bulgaria is a member of the European Union (EU) but is not part of the Schengen Zone.
Travellers should be aware of the different visa requirements for Bulgaria compared to Schengen countries.
Citizens of the EU, EEA, and some other countries may enter Bulgaria visa-free for short stays.
However, it's essential to check visa requirements based on your nationality and the purpose of your visit.
If you plan to explore Bulgaria by road, be aware that a vignette is required for using highways and major roads - these can be purchased at border crossings, gas stations, or online.
Bulgaria has a toll system for certain roads - speed limits are generally 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on non-urban roads, and 140 km/h on highways.
Most shops in Bulgaria are open from Monday to Saturday, with some smaller establishments closing for a few hours during midday.
Sunday shopping is also becoming more common in larger cities and tourist areas.
While camping enthusiasts can enjoy the abundance of nature, it's essential to follow local regulations.
Wild camping is generally allowed in remote areas, but national parks and private lands may have restrictions.
Bulgaria boasts a wealth of historical and natural attractions including the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery, the ancient city of Nessebar, and the mystical Belogradchik Rocks are must-visit destinations.
Bulgaria offers excellent value for money, with the price of a litre of beer averaging around 2-3 BGN and local wines being equally affordable.
Dining out is also reasonably priced, making Bulgaria an attractive destination for budget-conscious travelers.

The first known inhabitants in the village are from about 2000 years ago. Originally a Roman village, it was home to horse and sheep breeders. Archives say that Polski Senovets were called Senovyats or Osyanovets. There were several small villages nearby, Sarnitsa, Glogota, and Dunavliy Suvandzhikyoy, with 100–200 people each.

Day 4 (part 1) Vidin and Belogradchik
A quick bus tour of the little port city of Vidin and then we drove to Belogradchik in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. It was a gorgeous day and we had a great time.

This summer we travelled to the Black Sea, Burgas in Bulgaria from Ebbsfleet, this is our story in six parts. This episode see's us arrive at Burgas, only to depart the next day by plane (tut tut) but not before being pestered by Taxi drivers, who were not required as our hotel was only 800 yards away.
