Egun Mask Dance in Benin | GeoEx
Having joined our culture tour in West Africa, GeoEx team member, Heather Cunningham, bears witness to the exciting and mysterious Egun Mask Dance.
The intensely colored, elaborate costumes are made with multiple layers of cloth and shades of red. Representing spirits of the dead, no one wants to be touched by an Egun mask dancer as that carries the danger of death. Upon arrival, they perform a kind of bullfight to scare the crowd, however, in truth they are met with bursts of laughter!

The Voodoo Festival is an annual event in Ouidah, Benin. Part of the festival is the dance and comical antics of the masked Egungun, which represent the spirits of the dead.
