3. Arbanasi is a very small village perched on a hill about 5 kilometers away from Veliko Tarnovo. Besides the amazing views of Veliko Tarnovo and Tsarevets, Arbanasi offers quaint cobblestone streets and old houses surrounded by high National Revival style stone fences. Arbanasi is one of the most popular destinations in Bulgaria among the locals. There are numerous hotels and restaurants in this small village. One of the best attractions is the Nativity Church. It has some beautiful frescoes that date back to the 16th and 17th century. You can also visit one of the typical National Revival style houses – Konstantsalieva House – and learn about how people lived in those days.
2. One of the best places to visit in all of Europe, Veliko Tarnovo stands out because of its remarkable beauty. The River Yantra meanders through Veliko Tarnovo creating a picturesque setting for this historic northern Bulgarian city. National Revival style houses cling to the hills, making it so easy to fall in love with this inviting city. A lesser known fact is that the city was Bulgaria’s capital between the 12th and 14th century, during the heyday of the Second Bulgarian Empire. When in Veliko Tarnovo, visit Tsarevets – the fortress with ramparts, the king’s castle, and the church on the top of the hill. Go back in time by walking along the cobblestone Gurko Street and shop for handcrafted souvenirs at the Samovodska Charshia. For the most amazing 360-degree views of the city, go to the Asenevtsi Monument. You should also try to visit the art gallery while you’re there.
1. At first sight Bulgaria’s largest city just seems like another busy and modern capital, but there are layers of history that are still being uncovered. The latest discovery happened between 2010 and 2012 when a whole part of the ancient city of Serdica was found during excavation works for one of the metro stations. Some of the most famous attractions in the city include the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Saint Sofia Church with its subterranean museum and the necropolis, the 4th-century Church of St. George, and the UNESCO-awarded Boyana Church. For the museum lovers, Sofia is home to the National History Museum where you can see some of the most famous ancient gold treasures in the world, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Archeology Museum, the National Art Gallery which is housed in the former royal palace, and the Museum of Socialist Art. The nature lovers won’t be disappointed either, as Sofia is located at the foot of the Vitosha Mountain, where you can go hiking and skiing. You’ll find everything from exciting nightlife and affordable accommodation to lovely boutiques and charming cobblestone streets when you visit Sofia.

Over the years, Pleven has undergone various transformations. The spirit and energy it carries from past generations have saturated the city with indescribable charm and individuality. This is evidenced by many cultural monuments and military history museums, which remind us of the glorious history of the city. The atmosphere of Pleven is complemented by the richness of natural landmarks, parks, and water pools typical of this region.
Panorama Pleven Epopee 1877
Panorama “Pleven Epopee 1877” – Pleven city was constructed to commemorate 100th anniversary from Pleven battles during the Russian -Turkish War in 1877 – 1878, and the city liberation on 10th of December 1877, as well. The panorama is in “Skobelev” park, on the authentic battlefield where, during the third attack to Pleven on 11th-12th of September 1877, Russian army carried out the fiercest battles to take over Pleven. The Panorama was officially opened on 10th of December 1977.
Saint George the Victorious Chapel and Mausoleum
Mausoleum-chapel “St. George the Victorious” commemorates the heroes – i.e., 31 000 soldiers and officers of the multinational Russian imperial army and 4500 of Romanian army, who perished and were wounded during the Russian -Turkish War in 1887-1878 and during Pleven Epopee 1877.
Mausoleum is in Bulgarian ecclesiastical style with Byzantine architectural elements. On Northern and Southern mausoleum sides are embedded memorial granite plates disclosing the titles of Russian and Romanian squadrons, the officers’ names, and soldiers’ number who perished in the battles for Pleven. Above the entrance wooden door artistically carved by prof. Ian Travnitski can be seen as a high relief of “St. George the Victorious” made by the sculptor Zheko Spiridonov.
The Mausoleum is a cultural monument of national importance.
Skobelev park
The memorial park-museum was established in the period 1904 – 1907 after the initiative of “Tsar Alexander II – The Liberator” Committee with chairman Stoyan Zaimov. The park is located South -West from Pleven, on the authentic place where the detachment of General M.D.Skobelev fought and where the most fierce battles for Pleven liberation took place during the third attack to Pleven on 11th – 12th of September, 1877. On these green heights perished nearly 6 500 people of general M.D.Skobelev detachment which numbered 13 000 people. Since then, this valley housing the Zelenogorski brook was named the “Valley of the Dead”.
In the park, the centre was constructed a fraternal mound – bone vault. A marble sarcophagus in it contains bones of the Russian warriors from general M. D. Skobelev detachment.
Tsar Aleksander II House Museum
On 11th of December 1877 in this house owned by Pleven merchant Ivan Vatsov, the Russian emperor Alexander II was welcomed. Here he was given a letter of appreciation by Pleven citizens and in the presence of the great prince Nikolay Nikolaevich, Romanian prince Carol I and Russian military minister Milyutin had a meeting with the captivated Turkish marshal Osman Pasha.
Preserved is the authentic arrangement in the guest room where emperor Alexander II was welcomed. In two of the rooms, the ceilings are still original, while the wallpapers were restored after preserved original elements.
Water cascade
The water cascade in Pleven is water complex that has more than 1,500 m2 of water-covered area with more than 10 waterfalls, fountains, 3 water mirrors, differently modelled water streams and splashes. It has been built in Pleven downtown in 1982. The complex is very beautiful during the night with its part-coloured spectacular lighting.

I always enjoy going to Sofia, because it is actually so big and there are really so many enjoyable places and even though I know I definitely missed loads, I think I got through quite a few things in the 6 hours that I managed to spend there.

Pleven, Bulgaria / Плевен, България
Pleven is the seventh most populous city in Bulgaria. It is the biggest economic center in Northwestern Bulgaria, internationally known for the siege of Plevna of 1877.
Pleven is in an agricultural region in the middle of the Danubian Plain, the historical region of Moesia, surrounded by low limestone hills, the Pleven Heights.
Kaylaka Park Dams Pleven Bulgaria 4K
Kaylaka (Bulgarian: Кайлъка [kɐjˈɫɤkɐ]) is a large park and protected area south of Pleven, Bulgaria, situated in a Karst valley. The park is spread over 10 km2 and is surrounded by sheer cliffs that suggest favourable conditions for rock climbing. The ruins of the Roman fortress of Storgosia are located in Kaylaka, as well as ponds and reservoirs with boats and pedalos, a swimming pool, hotels, cafés, restaurants, discothèques and playgrounds.
The place is suitable for different outdoor activities including jogging, cycling, kayaking, rock climbing, fishing, and many others.
Kaylaka is masterfully modeled by nature. It is located on about 10 thousand cedars in the karst valley of the river Touchenitsa. For centuries the river has cut through the limestone rocks and formed a small gorge with parallel vertical cliffs, 20-30 meters high from each other at a distance of 100-150 meters. The natural canyon of the river is home to rich and diverse flora and fauna, where plants unique to Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula are found, and many of the birds and mammals are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. Prehistoric animals and creatures lived there millions of years ago, and fossils of ancient aquatic organisms can still be seen in most limestone cliffs. With the naked eye you can see the decline of the world's oceans over the millennia as shaped floors on the rocks and many caves. Himalayan pines, rare in Bulgaria, grow in the central part of the park. And inside is a small grove planted with evergreen Lebanese cedar. Huge chestnuts bloom and smell on both sides of the central alley. These and other diverse tree species enrich the landscape of the park.
Kaylaka Dams
Arguably the most important figure with connection to the park is General Lieutenant Ivan Vinarov, the first chairman of an initiative committee which set up the Kaylaka People's Park at the place of the Sokol Hunting Park in 1946. Under Vinarov the protected park territory was enlarged almost four times and several reservoirs were constructed.
The park's name stems from the Ottoman Turkish kayalık, meaning a rocky place.
