Driving in Mauritius from La Vanille Nature Park to Le Récif Attitude Hotel Via Curepipe and Phoenix

One of our longer drives in Mauritius today. Leaving the zoo La Vanille Nature Park before driving down some very pot holed roads, then stopping at KFC Curepipe then Phoenix Mall before getting petrol at Shell on the junction of A4 and B41 and returning to our hotel Le Récif Attitude Hotel. This 75KM drive took just under two hours due to it being late afternoon and the start of rush hour traffic just as it seemed schools are leaving for the day but not too bad considering some days. This was filmed Monday 19th June 2023 while driving a rented 2022 Toyota Urban Cruiser from penguin rentals. This one took a while to do all the time stamps as more than normal but I hope you enjoy!

Quartier Des Serres - A unique shopping destination in Mauritius

We visit Quartier Des Serres at Château de Labourdonnais in Mapou. The center is well known for the La Terrasse restaurant, but few people venture further than the great eatery to explore the fantastic shops. after enjoying a great bowl of noodles we explored all that it has to offer, from unique and interesting shops to a huge garden center and tons of locally made produce. Of course, we stopped off for lunch before doing some shopping. There is more on offer here than expected and a great day out.

Rodrigues reopened! Flying to the second-biggest island of Mauritius

Filmed on the 12th of April, 2022

It took a long time, but Rodrigues finally opened up for both domestic tourism as well as international tourism. It's an autonomous island, so they got to decide for themselves whether to go along with the Mauritian immigration policy. The island has been pretty much closed off from the world from March 2020 till March 2022 with few repatriation flights in between.

Going to this smaller island was kind of a prerequisite for the trip to Mauritius. I'm very happy they opened up so we can stay a few months on this island of roughly 40.000 inhabitants. It's a tiny pearl in the Indian Ocean far away from everything.

To read more about traveling to Rodrigues from Mauritius, read the dedicated article:

Family carry their Ganesh idol on auto rikhshaw for immersion on the last day of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesha Chaturthi is the Hindu festival celebrated on the birthday (rebirth) of the lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati.
It is believed that Lord Ganesh bestows his presence on earth for all his devotees during this festival. It is the day when Ganesha was born. Ganesha is widely worshiped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel. The festival, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi (festival of Ganesha) is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between 19 August and 20 September. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period).

While celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. Outside India, it is celebrated widely in Nepal and by Hindus in the United States, Canada, Mauritius,Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Fiji, Trinidad & Toba
The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon). The date usually falls between 20 August and 20 September. The festival lasts for 10 or 12 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi. This festival is observed in the lunar month of bhadrapada shukla paksha chathurthi madhyahana vyapini purvabhadra. If Chaturthi prevails on both days, the first day should be observed. Even if chaturthi prevails for the complete duration of madhyahana on the second day, if it prevails on the previous day's madhyahana period even for one ghatika (24 minutes), the previous day should be observed.

Two to three weeks before Ganesh Chaturthi, artistic clay models of Lord Ganesha are made for sale by specially skilled artisans. They are beautifully decorated and depict Lord Ganesh in vivid poses. The size of these statues may vary from 3/4 of an inch to over 70 feet. The tallest Ganesha Idol made which stood 117 feet tall was situated in the city of Visakhapatnam in 2012.

Ganesh Chaturthi starts with the installation of these Ganesh statues in colorfully decorated homes and specially erected temporary structures mandapas (pandals) in every locality. The pandals are erected by the people or a specific society or locality or group by collecting monetary contributions. The pandals are decorated specially for the festival, either by using decorative items like flower garlands, lights, etc. or are theme based decorations, which depict religious themes or current events.
