Best Family Hikes in Mauritius
Did someone say family adventure? 💚
Local vlogger Will Tevs has rounded up the 5 best family-friendly hikes in Mauritius with different challenge levels to suit your kids’ ability level.
Have you done any of these hikes? ⛰️
Best hikes in Mauritius
Mauritius is more than just captivating beaches, turquoise lagoons and brilliant cultures colliding together. The island’s nature is incredible, so come and explore soaring peaks covered with forest, National Parks and astounding landscapes. We caught up with vlogger Will Tevs to reveal the top 5 best hikes in Mauritius for adventure, waterfalls and, of course, amazing views.
Le Morne
This World Heritage Site on the south coast of Mauritius is a stunning natural feature with phenomenal views from the summit. It was a retreat for enslaved people and remains a symbol of their fight for freedom. Start early to beat the crowds for stunning views at the halfway point and at the top. Le Morne is open to the public, so anyone can do this hike. It takes between three and four hours and there are some steep and rocky sections, so less confident climbers may want to follow a guide. Cool down on Le Morne Beach's sugary sands and don't miss a visit to the International Slave Route Monument at the foot of Le Morne.
6.5km 2-4 hours
Cascade 500 Pieds
See Mauritius' biggest waterfall with this quick and rewarding hike. This route only takes one to two hours and ends with a front-row seat to Mauritius' dramatic scenery and an energising dip in the cold pool at the top of Cascade 500 Pieds. This hike begins at the viewpoint for Alexandra Falls in the Black River Gorges National Park, so you can see two waterfalls in one day and spend more time in Mauritius' rugged forests if you like.
2.8km 1-2 hours
La Tourelle
Ready for something more challenging and off-the-beaten-track? Head to La Tourelle Mountain in the west of Mauritius for a three- to four-hour hike up the peak that sits behind the town of Tamarin. Head up the paths marked X or Z and use ropes to guide you up to the 563-metre-high summit. At the top, cast your eyes over Tamarin's little buildings below and Le Morne, sitting behind the melting blues of Île aux Bénitiers lagoon. Note that you may need permission to access the private land and a guide is recommended.
3.5km 2-3 hours
7 Cascades / Tamarin Falls
Explore the heart of the valley with this hike that takes you to seven waterfalls in surrounding scenery that looks straight out of Jurassic Park. Start from the top of the highest of the seven waterfalls and work your way down, surrounded by birdsong and a flourishing forest. The hike takes two to three hours to complete and, at the end, you can jump into a stunning pool underneath a 45-metre waterfall. If you're feeling daring, get closer to the waterfalls with a guided canyoning expedition.
5.5km 2 hours
Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire
This list wouldn't be complete without the highest peak in all of Mauritius: Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire. This is where you want to go for 360-degree views of the whole island. The last challenging stretch near the top is worth it for what you’ll see at the peak. Finish your climb at the top of the island, where clouds might join you, or, on the clearest days, you’ll get the best panoramic views of soft forest ridges and the sea meeting the horizon.
5-6km 1:30-2:30
Places on Earth That Don't Feel Real #shorts #mauritius #youtubeshorts
Mauritius is an island country located in the Indian Ocean, off the eastern coast of Africa. It is part of the Mascarene Islands and lies about 500 miles east of Madagascar. The country includes the main island of Mauritius, as well as Rodrigues Island, the Cargados Carajos Shoals, and the Agalega Islands. The island of Mauritius is volcanic in origin and is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs. The northern part of the island is a plain that rises to a central plateau, bordered by small mountains that may have formed the rim of an ancient volcano. The highest point on the island is Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire in the southwest, which stands at 2,717 feet. The island has a mixed developing economy based on tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing. Mauritius is known for its multicultural population, incredible expensive resorts, rum, sugar, fruit jams, and nice golf courses.

REUNION ISLAND: Ultimate Travel Guide to VOLCANOES & BEACHES in the Indian Ocean
This is the French paradise in Africa! Far away in the Indian Ocean is an incredible nature paradise island called La Réunion. Between Mauritius and Madagascar, this island has crazy white beaches, stunning volcanic landscapes, lush waterfalls and cosy colonial towns.
During our two week family holiday full of sun, beaches, hikes and great food, I show you all the highlights of La Réunion and all the top sights. At the airport in Saint-Denis we rent a car and drive to Boucan Canot, a hotspot near the best beaches. We visit the best snorkeling spot at Plage de l'Hermitage and drive down south to Saint-Pierre. We visit the volcanos at Piton de la Fournaise and see the best jungle waterfall Cascade de Grand Galet. Of course we brought the drone for perfect 4K footage. This video is the perfect guide for a family holiday to Reunion Island!
In the previous episodes you saw how we made a road trip from Cape Town to Kruger Park in South-Africa. We drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on for a safari in Etosha National Park. Lately we visited Botswana and Zimbabwe, to cross the border again back to South Africa. After the Kruger Park, we fly out of Johannesburg to take you island hopping on Mauritius and also the French island of La Réunion.
Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. La Réunion is already destination number 26, after Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Zanzibar & Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mauritius. We have also been away from home for one and a half year now. Follow us on this world tour, now in La Réunion and then to many more beautiful destinations across the globe! We still travel non-stop all year and film everything, with a new episode every week. Also take a look at instagram @woutoftheworld or
