Steam in China 2000 - Jingpeng Pass

Ten years ago I uploaded to YouTube a few short videos shot in China in November 2000. I have re-edited the video and up loaded with longer sequences and material missing from previous uploads

The JiTong line in Inner Mongolia was opened in 1996 and discovered shortly after by the French photographer Julien Blanc. It was dieselised by 2005. The 943km, standard gauge line runs from Tongliao in the east to Jining in the west. About half way along it crosses the spectacular Jingpeng Pass with a ruling gradient of 1/80. It has seven tunnels, two large loops and several bridges and viaducts. From the hills above the town of Reshui it was possible to see the train for more than forty minutes as it passes the small town on three levels. Most trains over the pass had a double headed pair of QJ class 2-10-2 steam locomotives in charge, hauling a maximum of 2300 tonnes

China steam finale - Pingzhuang, August 2011

This video shows steam trains serving the coal mines and washery at Pingzhuang in Inner Mongolia in August 2011. There is a brief look at the EL2 electric locomotives which feature in a separate video on this channel.

内蒙古自治区にある平庄煤鉱鉄路で貨物を牽

The film shows a selection of the movements described below.

August 26
Walking towards the nearby washery, the first loco we found was SY 1441 on a long train of loaded CR wagons. Nearer the washery, SY 0400 was shunting wagons and SY 1052 was at the servicing point. We had a look at the opencast mine. All working on the far side of the mine had been abandoned and landslips had destroyed sections of the terracing. But plenty of coal was being brought out with EL2 electrics heading trains of 9 side tipping wagons with a control wagon at the rear. At the unloading point for the washery, whilst a train was being unloaded on the track next to the washery, the two adjacent loops were both occupied by trains waiting for unloading. SY 1025, north facing, was in the yard below the track used by emptied departing opencast coal trains. It left with a train of overhauled side tipper wagons, which were bound for the deep mines side where it was later seen light engine reversing at the brewery level crossing before heading north.

August 27
At 14:50 SY 1441 arrived from the south with empty wagons from CR, after which SY 1052 set off light engine towards the south. SY 0400 and SY 1079 were at the servicing point but soon left, which was the start of 60 minutes of near continuous action. Firstly, SY 0400, light engine, departed northwards towards the deep mines and SY 1079 started shunting empty CR wagons at the north end of the washery, whilst north facing SY 1025 arrived from the north light engine. A second north facing loco, SY 1487, was shunting side tipper wagons to be loaded with washed coal. One of the crew had his bicycle perched above the front buffer beam.

After much toing and froing, SY 1079 finally assembled a train of 11 empty CR wagons and positioned them for loading coal from the washery. During this time SY 1487's 8 tipper wagons were loaded, but only for a very short journey. They were hauled forward then reversed back, halting before moving forward again onto a dead end siding above a coal yard. Here most of the coal was unloaded for further transport by road. Whilst this was happening, SY 1052 returned from the south with a train of empty CR wagons. After leaving its siding, SY 1487 backed its tipper wagons towards the servicing point, probably to top up the coal supply there.

August 28
SY 1052 and SY 0400 were at the Zhuangmei washery servicing point but everything was quiet so we went for another look at the opencast side of the washery. SY 1487 was shunting side tipping wagons of what we assumed was waste, as it disappeared towards the north, possibly to a tip. There were two EL2 hauled trains at the washery unloading point.

The first mine we looked at was the one with the concrete panda after the level crossing on the approach to the mine, called Gushan Yijing (or in English Gushan Mine 1, although it is the second mine you come to, confusing or what?). Almost as we arrived, SY 1441 was departing from the mine towards the washery with a train of loaded tipping wagons. After a grab shot, it was back in the cars and a hasty drive to the mine between us and the washery.

We were in time for the arrival of SY 1441 and train here at Erjing (Mine 2). Because there is a washery here, and I think Mine 1 and maybe Mine 3 do not have there own washeries, unwashed coal is brought here for washing and loading into CR wagons. So SY 1441 ran round its train, from which it split 7 wagons and shunted for unloading. On completion of the unloading, the 7 wagons were left in the platform loop. These wagons had contained quite fine coal, presumably collected from Erjing, but the remaining 8 contained quite good sized lumps. SY 1441 was shunting the unloading of these wagons, when SY 1079 passed through from a mine further up the branch with 8 CR wagons of coal.

With thanks to Dave Fielding and the SY country web site for trip details.

A Perfect day at Mifeng 2018

We had several days on the Jiayang Coal Railway near Qianwei in Sichuan. The line is now passenger train only and these are mainly tourist trains. My tour group had gone off to search for small coal mines and I spent the day either side of Mifeng with food and drink provide by Dr Cheng's wife at the pharmacy. The steam-outline diesel (the SOD) was not in use, it was clear sunshine (very unusual for Sichuan) and there were plenty of trains. It's a pity that the trains were only 1-3 coaches but that was one reason the SOD was being rested. You can read my report of the day here:

Steam Train on Lake Baikal

L3485 and then L3489 give runpasts on the shore of Lake Baikal. This train was the Trans-Siberian Steam Express, the last steam hauled train to travel the full length of the famous Trans Siberian Railway between St Petersburg and Vladivostok
This part was alongside Lake Baiikal for approx 85km taking a full five hours due to the poor rail conditions
In the summer of 2020 there are  excursions by electric (every day) steam trains (Monday and Thursdays) and diesel powered trains go on Wednesdays and Thursdays in winter.

#12 HONG KONG, CHINA 🇭🇰 - Hiking on Llama Island - Tom Goes To Every Country

Hong Kong was a cool trip! Got to see an old friend, and make some new ones! Unfortunately, I actually got sick during my stay there, but luckily I managed to film enough! I'd definitely recommend a visit to everyone, but personally, I couldn't see myself settling down there to live. Keep your eyes open during the first montage -- a lot goes on in Hong Kong! ^_^

Chinese Steam 2011 - Pingzhuan 1

Pingzhuan coal mine is located in Inner Mongolia, 50kms south of Chiefeng.
Locos are being prepared at the stabling point.
Despite the sunshine, the air temperature is about -15°C, this does not seem to concern the birds who chirp happily in the background. Soon, the the exhaust of an SY can be seen and then heard as it hauls a 3500 ton coal train towards the China Rail exchange sidings at Pingzhuan Nan. Just as the loco passes, the fireman blows down the boiler, covering the camera and tripod in fine water droplets which instantly freeze on contact the cold metal. This would probably be my last opportunity to see a train of this weight hauled by steam so I indulged myself and included all the wagons.
After leaving its load at the exchange sidings, the loco returns with a rake of empties. An impatient car driver hoot angrily because my tripod is partially blocking the lightly used and dusty side road.
With the sound of distant firecrackers in the background a tender first SY approaches a level crossing.

China Steam Spectacular!

China Steam Spectacular!

Imagine thousands of steam locomotives in everyday use, rolling through lands of stunning beauty. That was steam railroading in China in 2001 when this exciting documentary was filmed. Much of it is hauntingly similar to the American railroads of the 1930s-1950s. All of it is fascinating. Join our tour of six unique sites and see why steam in China may be the greatest railroad show on earth!

We begin on legendary Jing Peng Pass with its 40 miles of tunnels, 2% ruling grade, horse shoe curves, and spiral bridges entirely serviced by double-headed 2-10-2 QJ class locomotives. Next we take you to Daban where the entire fleet of 100 QJ's are serviced. Their resemblance to Union Pacific or NYC locomotives, with smoke box deflectors, Boxpok driving wheels, and large smokebox-mounted headlights, is remarkable. In the coal mining region of Tiefa, a fleet of thirty 2-8-2 SY class locomotives pull fast commuter trains with amazing frequency. Our camera catches the action there near a busy double diamond junction. The Dahiuchang Limestone Quarry near Beijing is an enchanting narrow gauge steam line where we'll view endless strings of tiny ore cars pulled by miniature locomotives. At Anshan, we are granted rare access into one of the world's largest steel mills. It operates its own fleet of forty 2-8-2's and the activity level is incredible. Finally, we'll witness the awesome brute strength of three 2-8-2's straining full throttle up the 3-1/2 percent grade to the Chengde steel mill complex. This line has it all: steep curves, rock cuts, narrow tunnels, and terrific rural scenery. Experience the wonder of it all in China Steam Spectacular!

Yebaishou by Night

Picture this - it was a hot and humid August trip to China around 1994. Ted Talbot and I arrived in China after a period of heavy rain and flooding in June and July and the result was very high humidity and poor air clarity throughout and very trying daytime conditions. Ted’s still cameras stayed mainly in the camera bag. I showed the cook in the restaurant how to cook proper chips and made up a tomato kechup from tomato paste and vinegar. This night shot was my best bit of video of the whole trip! We left Yebaishou around 23:00 and before our steam-hauled overnight train to Chengde arrived, these two back-to-back QJs on an engineers’ train with another QJ on the rear set off along with a shunting JS in parallel. Magic! Oh to have the chance to do this again with a current generation video camera.

【Shanghai.4k】At night, walking on the old Shanghai pierTravel around Shanghai: 上海の街

The Old Quay is the original Sixteen Shops, the most legendary place in Shanghai. It is a place where the legendary stories of the moguls of the Shanghai Bund were told at the beginning of the last century. The buildings of the Old Quay generation consist of riverfront alleyways, old-style shikumen groups, and they are adjacent to the Huangpu River, with the warehouses of Jinrong and Du Yuesheng. Today, the old docks have become a place of art, culture, commerce and style in the city of Shanghai, presenting the world with a distinctive nautical style. At night, we walked on the old pier, the river breeze, reminiscing about the old days.

Have a great trip.

Brief introduction/

China - A Train Every Few Minutes (Pt.2), Sandaoling December 2016

We were very lucky during our recent visit to Sandaoling. Not only was the weather milder than the expected minus 20 (only minus 4 in the day) but coal production was at a high. This meant that, at times, trains were leaving the opencast mine every few minutes. This wasn't the case for the whole of our week at the site, but for a few days it was exceptionally busy. I've captured some of that time here. The JS Class 2-8-2's have plenty of spare pulling power to handle the loaded coal trains on the steep incline, but are limited by the adhesion they can manage on the poorly maintained track. Nevertheless, they put in a great performance and produce amazing sights and sounds, as their exhaust echoes around the opencast mine. This experience, the world's last example of genuine steam hard at work, is only to be available for a short time longer. It's expected that the operation will end for good some time in the first half of 2017.
