Traveling to Latvia? Watch this video to discover Latvia's highlights!
Are you traveling to Latvia for your next holiday? Are you still undecided on which countries to choose for your trip to the Baltics? If it is going to be your first time in Latvia, do not miss these highlights!
Latvia is a Baltic country located in northern Europe. It was initially a part of the Russian Empire and became an independent country post the Russian Revolution in 1917. Latvia is defined by its untamed nature, countless pristine beaches, and lovely lakes. With half the country covered by forests, this is an excellent playground for outdoor enthusiasts.
The capital Riga is the biggest metro in the Baltics and is home to one-third of Latvia’s population. Here, you will find the UNESCO world heritage listed pedestrian-only Old Town (also known as Vecriga) with its impressive Gothic and Art Nouveau architecture. This port city – on the coast of the Gulf of Riga – has a lively nightlife and almost a thousand years of history. Other highlights of Riga include the Blackheads House – a 14th-century landmark building, the Freedom Monument – a 42m tall memorial dedicated to the martyrs of the Latvian War of Independence, Riga Central Market – Europe’s largest market, Riga Cathedral and various art galleries and museums.
Riga makes an excellent base for exploring Kemeri National Park – located near the resort town of Jurmala which has a pristine beach and seaside villas. Kemeri National Park’s major highlights are its forests, lakes, picturesque villages and the famed Great Kemeri Bog. The park is a nature lover’s delight and offers stunning scenery and nature walks.
Throughout the country, you can be sure to stumble upon charming historical towns. Cesis – located in the northeast, has a lovely medieval castle. Situated almost halfway between Riga and Cesis, Sigulda is a mountainous town with the red-bricked Turaida Museum Reserve, plenty of outdoor sports activities and other historical sites.
One of Latvia’s most recognized landmarks – Rundale Palace is located in the southern region of the country in a village named Pilsrundale. This stunning piece of architectural marvel has a well-manicured garden and visitors can explore 40 out of its 138 rooms.
On the west coast of Latvia lies the beautiful port city of Liepaja, known for its beaches, torpedo boats and old prison. Located in the northwest corner of Latvia, Cape Kolka is where the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga. Together with the nearby Slitere National Park, Cape Colca is a paradise for nature lovers.
Be it the beautiful beaches or the dense forests, Latvia’s amazing natural charm is a delight for its visitors. Along with nature, the country is also packed with numerous historical elements, which makes this underrated destination in Europe, a true delight to explore.

Pilsrundāle. Rundāles pils.
#rundale #latvia #pilsrundale

Famoust Rundale Palace and its magnificent garden! Located in ???????? Rundale, Latvia
The Rundale Palace is set amidst the fertile Zemgale Plains in the south of Latvia. Most of the interior decorations were created between 1765 and 1768 when a sculptor from Berlin Johann Michael Graff, and Italian painters from St. Petersburg Francesco Martini and Carlo Zucchi worked at the palace.
- Palace
The representation rooms in the eastern wing of the palace – the Gilt Hall, the White Hall, and the Great Gallery – are open to the public. The central block accommodates the Duke's suite with reception parlours and private rooms, and the eastern block – a fully restored suite of Duchess's rooms.
- Museum
The Rundāle Palace Museum works as a centre for research into Latvia's history, through creating collections, arranging exhibitions and producing publications. The exhibition halls display applied art, fine art and historical expositions; the palace hosts the Early Music Festival and recitals of classical music.
- Park
The regular French style park with its rose garden, the Green Theatre, ornamental parterres and the fountain, are open for the public. In summers, the park becomes the venue for the Garden Festival.
A Baroque palace cannot be imagined without the French garden, an elaborate architectural framework devised of green plantings that should manifest the triumph of art over nature. The park spreads out to the south of the palace, and Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed it together with the palace building. An artificial canal runs around the park, encircling also the palace and the stables. Although Rundāle's formal garden is but 10 ha large, Rastrelli has managed to fill it with an intricate maze of allées, cross paths, pergolas and bosquets.
- Rose garden
The bosquets feature an impressive, almost one hectare large, rose garden that spreads on both sides of the parterres. The garden reflects the history of cultivating roses in Europe from the early 18th century till these days.
- Green amphitheatre
A green amphitheatre has been set up in one of the bosquets, following Rastrelli's original design and the still remaining relief shapes. The venue was launched on 11 July 2004 with the performance of Georg Friedrich Händel's opera, Rinaldo.
- Fountains
In front of the palace, Rastrelli's design envisaged three fountains which did not work in the 18th century; instead of them there were water basins. The central pool is enclosed by four ornamental parterres, reconstructed after Rastrelli's design, and consisting of surfaces covered with chips of brick and white marble, and lawn, all edged in trimmed boxwood hedging.

The Rundāle Palace ensemble is one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo architecture in Latvia. It was built according to the architectural design of the architect Francesco Rastrelli fom 1736 to 1740, and from 1764 to 1768 as a summer residence for Ernst Johann Biron, the Duke of Courland.
The interiors now feature art objects and household items characteristic of the era to the Dukes. The eastern wing of the Palace houses staterooms for festivities while the Duke’s and private apartments are in the central building and the Duchess' apartments in the western wing.
On the south side of the Palace is located the French Baroque garden which covers 10 hectares and fully retains its original layout designed by Francesco Rastrelli in 1735/1736. It displays all the characteristic elements of French gardens – an ornamental parterre, fountain, the Green Theatre, bosquets, pergolas, pavilions and a labyrinth.
