Talk
The official language is Portuguese, used in all official publications and announcements as well as in business, media and schools, but the local language is Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu kabuverdianu), a Portuguese-based creole language with 95% of the words from Portuguese and the rest mainly from West African languages. It is divided into 9 dialects spoken on various parts of the country. Even though Kriolu is comprehensible to a skilled Portuguese-speaker, almost all people can also speak Portuguese as a second language. French is also known by many, and some people also speak English.

It is a good idea to know some Kriolu or at least Portuguese, since even though young urban people are often quite proficient in English, this does not apply to old and rural people, and even those who can speak English will highly appreciate any attempt you do to speak Kriolu or Portuguese.

Epic Things to do in Fogo, Cape Verde + Climbing Mount Fogo Volcano

The landscape of Fogo Island, Ilha do Fogo, is one of the most dramatic ones of Cabo Verde. The entire island is dominated by the imposing volcano Pico do Fogo. 💚

🐞With its 2829 meters, is the highest point of Cabo Verde and Pico do Fogo, the volcano’s peak, is also one of the most active volcanoes on this planet. The last eruption dates only back to 2014.

🐞During the last eruption in 2014, the village of Chã das Caldeiras, built inside the volcanic crater on black sand, has been destroyed. However, the people from Chã have such a deep connection with this area, that they went back to the crater and rebuilt the village from scratch.

Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure

Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure

Cape Verde is a country in West Africa. It comprises a group of islands of the Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. It is part of the region of Islands collectively known as Macaronesia. Cape Verde has won a positive reputation in promoting what is considered the most stable democracy in Africa, a standard of living higher than most African nations, and one of the most politically liberal nations on the continent, and in the world.

Jutting up from the Atlantic, some 500km west of Senegal, this stunning island chain has a captivating blend of mountains, beaches and peaceful seaside villages. On Santo Antão, craggy peaks hide piercing green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, ideal for epic hikes. São Vicente is home to the cultural capital of the islands, Mindelo, which throbs with bars and music clubs. On Sal and Maio, undulating windswept dunes merge with indigo-blue seas on unspoilt beaches of powdery white sand. Meanwhile, far-flung Fogo and Brava in the southwest offer their own enchantments, from surreal volcanic landscapes, to sparkling bays framed by towering peaks. Throw in the constant beat of music that Cabo Verde is famed for and the renowned morabeza (Creole for hospitality) of its people and you’ll see why many have come – and never left.

Cape Verde’s climate is tropical, with a warm, dry summer. As a part of the greater Sahel region of Africa precipitation is meager and falls between the months of June to February, peaking in September. Tuna is common, as is Wahoo - a white fleshed fish with similar texture.

Amazing Cares Gorge Walk – Spain's Best One-Day Hike

Best one-day hike in Spain, probably even Europe? The Cares Gorge Walk (Ruta del Cares) in Asturias, in northern Spain, has to be a contender!

Join me on a stunning 25-kilometres hike along an amazingly engineered path in the dramatic northern part of the Parque Nacional de Picos de Europa. There are Indiana-Jones-style paths cut into the rock, plus tunnels, bridges and dizzying viewpoints. I've never been on a hike like it in Europe and it's guaranteed to be the highlight of your trip.

ALL THE DETAILS
The walk is from the trailhead at Poncebos (6km from the town of Arenas de Cabrales – there's a bus up to the start of the walk in summer). It takes about 3 hours to reach the small village of Caín – loads of cafes and restaurants here – and then you turn around and do it all again!

You need to be fit - it's a 25-km hike after all - but the going is flat and fairly easy. People do it in trainers, but hiking shoes or boots are best.

STAY - at the fabulous Hotel Torrecerredo in Arenas de Cabrales, which has brilliant food and tons of hiking advice and help -

Climbing the Highest Mountain in Portugal | Pico Island, Azores

Join us on our Euro 2020 trip where we leave the Azores Island of São Jorge, and head to Pico Island, home of historic vineyards and Portugal's highest mountain, Mount Pico!

In Episode 30 of our Eurotrip 2020 series, we take a morning ferry from São Jorge to Pico island where we hit the ground running with a scenic taxi tour of the island.

On our second day we braved our main challenge on this Azores trip, climbing the highest mountain in Portugal, Mount Pico. We weren't completely prepared for the hike but managed to make it to the top despite what felt like several hail storms and ice covered rocks!

On our last day we headed to the neat attraction of the Grutas das Torres, a large lava tube cave formed by the cooling of subterranean magma rivers.
