Piana degli Albanesi, the most important center of the Albanians of Sicily. Arbëreshëvet.

Piana degli Albanesi, in the province of Palermo, is the most important center of the Albanians in Sicily and the most populous Arbëreshë settlement in Italy. In the Albanian language the town is called Arbëreshëvet.
Located on a plateau, the Fusha plain, at the foot of Monte Pizzuta, on which the lake of the same name of Piana degli Albanesi extends, the town offers many points of interest and certainly deserves a careful visit.

The local community has maintained its culture, traditions and language unchanged over the centuries, which is still commonly spoken and taught in schools across the town today. You can get in touch with this reality, visiting the city and getting closer to the locals. The history of the Albanians in Sicily (and in the rest of southern Italy) is very interesting and dates back to the Ottoman invasion.
Furthermore, Piana degli Albanesi offers an interesting urban layout with a clear late-medieval matrix in which Byzantine origins are mixed with the more recent Sicilian Baroque.
The numerous Greek Orthodox churches and monumental fountains scattered all over the irregular plot of the historic center testify to this.
Strolling through the maze of alleys, stairways (shkallet) and neighborhoods (gjitoni), the common spaces between the buildings, discovering sudden passages under barrel vaults and unexpected arches, stopping to observe the votive shrines or the testimonies of the Arbereshe tradition, is a unique and fascinating experience.
And for those looking for nature, the Piana degli Albanesi lake is a protected oasis entrusted to the WWF and included among the hiking trails of the Sentiero Italia that retrace the ancient mountain communication routes. Absolutely not to be missed.
Not to be missed are the cannoli from Piana degli Albanesi, among the best in Sicily. Strictly made with ricotta, freshly prepared by the skilled hands of local pastry chefs, they are a delight for the palate. You can't leave Piana degli Albanesi without trying at least one.

The lake of Piana degli Albanesi - Trekking in Sicily - Traveling with children. Episode 5

The Lake Piana degli Albanesi, liqeni i Horës së Arbëreshëvet in arbëreshë, an artificial basin in the territory of Piana degli Albanesi and Santa Cristina Gela, is a naturalistic area of great landscape value, in the province of Palermo.
Wonderfully nestled in the mountains, not far from the town of Piana degli Albanesi, the lake is a wildlife oasis. Its banks are home to a rich arboreal and shrub vegetation, characterized by woods and scrubs that alternate with meadows and pastures. Porcupines, hares, hedgehogs, foxes and rabbits inhabit the surroundings but even more interesting is the partly resident avian fauna and partly subject to migratory flows. The crystal clear waters of the lake are animated by trout and carp.

Born to power a hydroelectric plant thanks to the dam on the Belice river, today the lake of Piana degli Albanesi is an ideal destination for trekking thanks to the paths that follow its perimeter. For those with children there is even an equipped area, equipped with tables and benches in the shade of a pine forest, where children can play safely. Also this time Alice had a lot of fun.

Obviously, after the walk, a visit to Piana degli Albanesi is a must, at least to taste one of her famous ricotta cannoli!

The song Succotash is by Silent Partner, and is available on the YouTube Audio Library.

Piana degli Albanesi - Albanian heritage in Sicily and great cannoli!

#sicily #sicilianfood #albany

Hello everyone,
this time we are glad to show you Piana degli Albanesi, another village in the province of Palermo.

The official name of the town was Piana dei Greci until 1941. This village is situated on a mountainous plateau and encircled by high mountains, on the eastern side of the imposing Mount Pizzuta, the city, which is mirrored on a large lake. Piana degli Albanesi is 24 km far from Palermo, the capital of Sicily.

Piana degli Albanesi was founded in the late 15th century by a large group of Albanian refugees coming from the Balkans during the conquest of the latter by the Ottoman Empire. The exodus began after the death of Skanderbeg, who successfully fought Ottoman armies for more than two decades.

The town is the most important center of the Albanians of Sicily, as well as the largest and most populous colony of Arbëreshë (Italo-Albanian or Albanians of Italy) and it is the episcopal see of the Eparchy of Piana degli Albanesi, constituency of the Italo-Albanian Church whose jurisdiction covers all Albanians of Sicily who practice the Byzantine rite.

The community, after five centuries from its foundation, has maintained many ethnic elements of Albanian culture like language, religious ritual, traditional costumes, music and folklore.

Piana degli Albanesi boasts a great local gastronomy. It offers dishes and desserts typical of the Sicilian-Albanian tradition, in which one can note the presence of elements deriving from the Balkans and the Mediterranean. The delicious bread and cannoli from Piana degli Albanesi are very popular in the entire Sicily!

This video come from a feed published on our Facebook page named Best Things to Do in Sicily, a community with more than 18,000 friends who follow us from US, Canada, Australia and other countries around the world.
