The temple marks one end of the Ancient Khmer Highway from Angkor. As the enclosed area of 1020x580m is comparable with that of Angkor Wat, Phimai must have been an important city in the Khmer Empire. Most buildings are from the late 11th to the late 12th century, built in the Baphuon, Bayon and Angkor Wat style. However, even though the Khmer at that time were Hindu, the temple was built as a Buddhist temple,[1] since the inhabitants of the Khorat area had been Buddhists as far back as the 7th century. Inscriptions name the site Vimayapura (which means city of Vimaya), which developed into the Thai name Phimai.

The first inventory of the ruins was done in 1901 by the French geographer Etienne Aymonier. The site was put under Thai governmental protection by announcement in the Government Gazette, Volume 53, section 34, on September 27, 1936. Most of the restorations were done from 1964 to 1969 as a joint Thai-French project. The historical park, now managed by the Fine Arts Department, was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on April 12, 1989.

In the aftermath of the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1767, attempts were made to set up five separate states, with Prince Teppipit, a son of King Boromakot, attempting to establish Phimai as one, ruling over eastern provinces including Nakhon Ratchasima. As the weakest of the five, Prince Teppipit was the first to be defeated and was executed in 1768. Phimai had previously been an important town at the time of the Khom. The temple Prasat Hin Phimai, located in the center of the town, was one of the major Khom temples in ancient Thailand, connected with Angkor by an ancient Khom Highway, and oriented to face Angkor as its cardinal direction. The site is now protected as the Phimai Historical Park

Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Korat, Issan, Phimai Night Market, Thailand. ( 29 )

The province is located on the western end of the Korat Plateau, separated from the Chao Phraya river valley by the Phetchabun and Dong Phaya Yen mountain ranges. Two national parks are in the province - the Khao Yai in the west and the Thap Lan in the south. Both parks are in the forested mountains of the Sankamphaeng Range, the southern prolongation of the Dong Phaya Yen mountains. Nakhon Ratchasima, or Korat, is a large province on the north eastern plateau and acts as a gateway to other provinces in the Northeast. It is 259 kilometres ( 161 miles ) from Bangkok and has an area of around 20,494 square kilometres (7,913 sq mi), making it the biggest Thai province. The province is rich in Khmer culture and has a long history.
The area around Khorat was already an important centre in the times of the Khmer empire in the 11th century, as can be seen by the temple ruins in the Phimai historical park. Still, Nakhon Ratchasima Province is one province where there is a sizable Northern Khmer population. A new walled city with a surrounding moat, designated as Nakhon Ratchasima, was built in the seventeenth century by order of the King Narai, as the easternmost command post, guarding the Kingdom's border and supervising its Lao and Cambodian vassals. It continued this duty during the Bangkok Period, although it was seized by deceit during Chao Anuwong of Vientiane's 1826 revolt against the King Rama III of Siam.
Nakhon Ratchasima has long been the most important political and economic centre in the northeastern region. In the late nineteenth century, the railroad reached Khorat became the junction of two main rail lines in the Northeastern, Issan, region. In 1933 it was the stronghold of the royalist troops in the Boworadej Revolt, as they fought the new democratic government in Bangkok. In the 1950's, the Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base was built in Nakhon Ratchasima; from 1961 until 26 February 1976, this facility was also used as a base by the United States Air Force.
A monument to Thao Suranaree ( real name: Khun Ying Mo; 1771–1852 ) is situated in front of the old Prau Chumpon gate. Also called The Great Heroine of Khorat, Kun Ying Mo was the wife of the Deputy Governor of Khorat during the reign of King Rama III. In 1826, Khun Ying Mo managed to save the city from an invasion by the Laotian army led by Prince Anouvong of Vientiane. King Rama III conferred the title of Thao Suranaree on Khun Ying Mo, as well as additional ones honouring her bravery.
Roads Highway 2 ( Mittraphap Road ) is the main route that connects 9 districts in Nakhon Ratchasima including Muang district. This route also connects Nakhon Ratchasima to Saraburi and Khon Kaen provinces. As, Highway No. 24 links Si Khio district from the Highway 2 to Pak Thongcha, Chok Chai and Nong Bunnak districts and to Buriram province.
Rail systems The railway system in Nakhon Ratchasima is on both north-eastern routes from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong central terminal. Nakhon Ratchasima has 8 main railway stations.
Bus service Mini-bus and bus routes operate in the city and nearby areas. There are non air-conditioned buses from the provincial town which go to every district. As for travel to nearby provinces, there are both air and non air-conditioned ones.
Songthaew (public passenger pick-up vehicle) Songthaew or public passenger pick-up vehicle is the most popular mode of public transportation in all the town districts. These run on fixed routes.
Taxis are plentiful, clean, safe, and inexpensive in Khorat. They can be found at taxi stands in the city areas or hailed on the streets. There are also certain taxis that can be requested by phone, however, the fare is slightly higher than regular taxis. An increasing number of taxi drivers nowadays speak some English which may prove extremely useful for first-time visitors. The fare system is based on both distance and time. Fares begin at 30 Bath for the first 2 kilometres.
Motorbike-taxi The motorbike taxis are found mainly in the town areas and are used mainly for short distances.
Airport Nakhon Ratchasima has one airport but as of June 2007, it no longer services any flights. The nearest airport is in Buriram and has flights to and from Bangkok.

Prasat Hin Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand

Prasat Hin Phimai is a Mahayana Buddhist sanctuary, and it the largest Khmer temple in Thailand. The sanctuary has a cruciform plan, with gopuras connected by galleries on each of the four sides. Phimai is located some 60 kilometers northeast of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Exploring Ancient Khmer Temple Phimai Historical Park in Korat, Thailand

Check out our new vlog from Korat, Thailand! This time we went to explore the ancient Khmer temple called Phimai Historical Park in Korat, Thailand.

Located in the town of Phimai (Prasat Hin Phimai), 60 km northeast of Korat (aka Nakhon Ratchasima), the historic temple ruins of Phimai are considered one of the largest of all Khmer temples in Thailand. The rectangular complex is over 1,000 meters long and nearly 600 meters wide and was built in the 11th and 12th centuries when this part of Thailand was ruled by the Khmer. It contains some of the finest examples of Khmer architecture in Thailand.

What makes this temple complex truly unique is the fact that it was built as a Buddhist temple, even though the Khmer who built it were Hindus.

Journey to Phimai Historical Park

On our way to the ancient city of Sukhothai we stopped at Phimai Historical Park located in the Nakhon Ratchasima province in Thailand. Phimai Temple was once connected with Angkor Wat in Cambodia by an ancient Khmer Highway. Most of the buildings on this site are from the late 11th and late 12th centuries. The site is now a protected historical site, and I definitely recommend you visit it if you're planning a drive north from Bangkok to Sukhothai or Petchabun.

Prasat Phimai - Phimai Historical Park- 11th Century Khmer Temple - Nakhon Ratchasima Thailand 2023

The Khmer Empire was a powerful Kingdom in South-East Asia. Its major architectural works (temples and sculptures) are located in present day Cambodia, where the capital of the empire was located. However, during long periods of time the Khmer ruled over parts of present day Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

Like other major ethnic groups in the history of South-East Asia (the Thais, the Mons, The Chams) the Khmer are thought to have descended in the prehistoric period from the river valleys in Eastern Tibet and Southwest China. The Khmer appear first on the scene (in Chinese records) in the second half of the 6th century A.D. with the Kingdom known as Chenla.

Since the Khmer reigned for long periods over extended areas of present day Thailand, Thailand has a substantial number of important Khmer monuments on its territory, mainly in its Northeastern Region (such as Phonom Rung and Muang Tam in Buriram Province, Phimai in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Muang Singh in Kanchanaburi province). Any look around the old temples of Sukhothai, Lopburi and Ayutthaya will also reveal strong Khmer architectural influences.

Phimai historical park is the largest of all Khmer temples in Thailand, the rectangular complex measures over 1,000 meters long by almost 600 meters wide. It contains some of the finest examples of Khmer architecture in Thailand.

What makes this temple unique is that is constructed as a Buddhist temple, even though the Khmer who built it were Hindu.

Phimai, which is officially named Prasat Hin Phimai was built during the 11th and 12th century, during which time the area was part of the Khmer empire. It was constructed on the end of the ancient highway connecting it with Angkor (present day Siem Reap), with other Khmer temples like Muang Tum and Phanom Rung in between.

Phimai historical park was renovated during the second half of the 1960’s. It is placed on UNESCO’s tentative list for future listing as a World Heritage Site.

The temple complex is well worth a visit. If you come plan on spending a few hours walking around and marveling at the history and ingenuity of the Khmer.

Enjoy the video!
