Vasilyevsky Island is the most famous of the St. Petersburg Islands. This is a real city within a city with its own history. Under Peter I, it was planned to create a city center here. Therefore, government buildings, a trade and scientific center appeared on Vasilyevsky Island. A characteristic feature of the island is a peculiar toponymy. Lines instead of streets, where each side of the roadway has its own name.

This is the first street laid through the island from Malaya to Bolshaya Neva (river). Due to its transit role, the first routes of urban public transport passed along the Kadetskaya line. In the middle of the 19th century, the movement of public carriages opened here.
The basis of this area is Bolshoy, Maly and Sredny avenues, which intersect with street lines that have numbers as names. Until the 70s of the 18th century, channels were located along a number of lines. And when they became shallow, they fell asleep. The word line does not mean the street, but the side of the canal.
