Back in 2013, my wife Ana and I spent 22 days driving around the beautiful Balkan country of Bulgaria. These are the 15 places you have to visit in Bulgaria!
1. Sofia
Bulgaria’s capital and largest city is the ancient city of Sofia. It’s the perfect city to begin your Bulgarian vacation. Check out Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the National Archaeological Museum, and the ruins of the Fortress of Serdika.
2. Rila Monastery
About 73 miles south of Sofia is Rila Monastery, the largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. It’s famous for its beautiful frescoes!
3. Plovdiv
Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria. Check out the 2nd century Stadium, the Ancient Forum, the Old Town, and the pedestrian-friendly city center!
4. Hisarya
From Plovdiv, take a day trip to the ancient Roman town of Hisarya, which is home to some of the best-preserved Roman gates and walls in Bulgaria, as well as ancient streets, Roman baths, and an amphitheater!
5. Stara Zagora
In Stara Zagora, visit the Neolithic Dwellings Museum, the Regional History Museum, and the Roman Forum of Augusta Trayana!
6. Burgas
In the coastal city of Burgas, check out the Sea Garden and Sculpture Garden, the Archaeological Museum of Burgas, and the annual Sand Festival. Grab a bite at either Ethnos Restaurant or Vodenitsata Restaurant.

10. Balchik Palace
Balchik Palace stands between the cliffs and the sea two kilometers south of Balchik. It’s made up of several buildings, a monastery, chapel, and more, and offers stunning views of the Black Sea!
11. Pliska
While in Varna, take a day trip to Pliska, a small town that served as the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire from 681 to 893 AD. The Byzantines burned Pliska to the ground, leaving only remains of the royal palace, the basilica, and walls.
12. Ruse
In Ruse, check out the historical architecture, the Pantheon of National Revival Heroes and the Regional Museum of History, and then have a traditional meal at Mehana Chiflika. Take a day trip from Ruse to the Rock Churches of Ivanovo!
13. Veliko Tarnovo
Veliko Tarnovo is a beautiful, 5,000-year-old city along the Yantra River. Notable sites include Tsaravets Fortress, the Old Town, and the Archaeological Museum. Don’t forget the Assens Monument!
14. Nicopolis ad Istrum
A great day trip from Veliko Tarnovo is the early Byzantine city of Nikopolis ad Istrum, founded in 106 AD by Emperor Trajan. The city’s remains include ancient streets, a forum, public baths, an odeon, public buildings, and an agora.
15. Maryan Winery
To get a taste of some of Bulgaria’s best wine, visit Maryan Winery in the village of Elena. They produce an award-winning rosé as well as limited amounts of Savignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and other blends.

Kremikovtsi Monastery Bulgaria
Kremikovtsi Monastery is located just north-east of Sofia. At the foot of the Balkan Mountains. The monastery was founded during the Second Bulgarian Empire, perhaps the mid 14th century. With the Ottoman conquest at the end of the 14th century the monastery was destroyed.
It was re-established in 1493 by boyar Radivoy and Bishop Kalevit from Sofia.
It is a pleasant day trip to take. I suggest you also pack your hiking gear because it is a great area to walk in.
Pack your own food, although there is a small local restaurant which sell great food.
It is only 21 kilometres from the Sofia Airport.

In Sofia, there is plenty to see and do in 24 hours! We in fact had a couple of days here! The hotel (Scotty's Boutique Hotel) was very cheap and cosy too!

Sofia ( SOH-fee-ə, SOF-; Bulgarian: Со́фия, romanized: Sofiya, IPA: [ˈsɔfijə] (listen)) is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. The city is at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country. Being in the centre of the Balkan peninsula, it is midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea, and closest to the Aegean Sea.Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC. The recorded history of Sofia begins with the attestation of the conquest of Serdica by the Roman Republic in 29 BC from the Celtic tribe Serdi, raided by Huns in 343-347 AD and 447 AD, conquered by Visigoths in 376-382 AD, conquered by Avars and Slavs in 617 AD, and on 9th April, 809 Serdica was surrendered to Krum of Bulgaria. In 1018, the Byzantines ended Bulgarian rule, while in 1040 it was shortly restored. The town was conquered by the Pechenegs in 1048 and 1078, by the Magyars and Serbs in 1183, and by the Crusaders in 1095 and 1190. The rule of the Second Bulgarian Empire lasted from 1194 until its conquest by the Ottomans in 1382.. From 1520 to 1836, Sofia was the regional capital of Rumelia Eyalet, the Ottoman Empire's key province in Europe. Bulgarian rule was restored in 1878. During World War II Sofia was bombarded by the UK and US Air Forces and at the end of the war, it was seized by the Soviet Army.
Being Bulgaria's primate city, Sofia is a hometown of many of the major local universities, cultural institutions and commercial companies. Sofia is one of the top 10 best places for start-up businesses in the world, especially in information technologies, according to Bulgarian National Television. Sofia was Europe's most affordable capital to visit in 2013.The population of Sofia declined down from 70,000 in the late 18th century, through 19,000 in 1870, to 11,649 in 1878 and began increasing. Sofia hosts some 1.23 million residents within a territory of 492 km2, a concentration of 17.5% of the country population within the 200th percentile of the country territory. The urban area of Sofia hosts some 1.54 million residents within 5723 km², which comprises Sofia City Province and parts of Sofia Province (Dragoman, Slivnitsa, Kostinbrod, Bozhurishte, Svoge, Elin Pelin, Gorna Malina, Ihtiman, Kostenets) and Pernik Province (Pernik, Radomir), representing 5.16% of the country territory. The metropolitan area of Sofia is based upon one hour of car travel time, stretches internationally and includes Dimitrovgrad in Serbia. Unlike most European metropolitan areas, it is not to be defined as a substantially functional metropolitan area, but is of the type with limited variety of functions. The metropolitan region of Sofia is inhabited by a population of 1.68 million and is made up of the whole provinces Sofia City, Sofia and Pernik, comprising more than 10,000 km².

PESHTERA is a town in the Rhodope Mountains, southern Bulgaria. It is located in Pazardzhik Province near the towns of Batak and Bratsigovo.
KRAKRA PERNIK FORTRESS 4K | Pernik Medieval Fortress | Bulgaria
Full tour of the Krakra Pernik Fortress, which is located on the southern outskirts of Pernik. It has a strategic position, and its primary purpose was to protect the Bulgarian kingdom's western boundary. The stronghold became the principal fortification of the local lord, Krakra of Pernik, during the tenth and eleventh centuries, which is where its name comes from.
Krakra's fortress was large and powerful. The walls are 2 m thick and follow the hill's natural bends. They enclosed a large inner yard with several residential, administrative, agricultural, and religious structures. Archaeologists discovered many coins and a ring with a stamp from King Peter I's reign.

Cherven Medieval city and Fortress near Bucharest (drone 4k)

The remains of the medieval town of Cherven are an archaeological site of great importance to the research of Bulgarian culture of the Middle Ages. The first excavations were carried out in 1910–1911 under professor Vasil Zlatarski, while regular research on the site began in 1961. Currently, archaeological work is being conducted by Stoyan Yordanov of the Rousse Regional Museum of History. Yordanov has over 30 years of experience working at Cherven, and leads excavations atop the Cherven old town site every summer.
